Just curious...I do moderate-level database work for a living and would like to learn how to develop a site like this...

Steal it off someone else. Give it to an uppity teenage for two weeks and then hide the rest of the code in Australia.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

(he means proprietory php on top on mysql)

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah php over mysql, asp over some msdb, cgi that kind of stuff would be common i'd imagine

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

php over mysql reads a bit like "poop over myself"

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought SQL Server was used instead of mysql. It mentions it in the error 'TURN BACK YOU POXY FULE' page. Or are they both used.

57 7th (calstars), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

the critics liked my first book, but decided to php over mysql.

fyi it is not recommended to 'spam' threads with a glut of large images that don't bear any particular relevance to the matter discussed, although i'm not sure if anyone can be bothered to enforce this 'rule'

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't the intention to make the source code openly available at one point? Did that get forgotten in The Episode Which Had Probably Better Not Speak Its Name?

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

(xpost) That's spamming? I thought he was giving us the answer!

GG Marquez (Huey), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

my threshold for the pics being relevant and funny is reached at this very moment. Some ppl might prefer there not to be any at all, whilst other ppl (including, I suspect, Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop himself) would be happy to see dozens more. These differences sun up what is both wonderful and frustrating about ILX.

Is there a Delete Jon button in the pipeline yet? And if not, why not?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Can anyone recommend a good book to get started in mysql/php or asp/msdb? My knowledge is limited to access database design and a bit of VB at this point.

57 7th (calstars), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

ILX is running on two machines I believe as discussed in the FAQ, a MySQL server and a webserver running Apache. The MySQL+ Apache combo is pretty common.

Another way to start setting up a site like ILX is to try out OpenACS, which is a 3-app framework for free that lets you start building really quickly and easily, it uses PostgreSQL and AOLServer instead of Apache and MySQL though. AOLServer is actually sworn on by lots of people as being better than Apache. I've also heard Postgres is much better than MySQL but being a hater of database dealing-with I can't say much.

The code for ILX Classic should still be freely available as per Philip Greenspun's wishes but the modifications made since by Graham and others I believe are closed, as I recall on one thread or another Graham clearly stated he didn't want any of his code being given away.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I preferred the ILX Dud code.

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

xpost Philip Greenspun's online documentation is a pretty good beginner's guide to SQL building for free if I recall.

OpenACS has a lot of decent FAQs and help docs on their website.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

In that case, is there any way to do a multi-topic forum just using PHP, and none of the SQL / ASP stuff which my server can't handle? I run what essentially amounts to a single-topic forum, but there's obviously hundreds of messages on there about various different things. I'm not sure how PHP would work in allowing users to "create" topics, but if anyone does know and could point me the right way I'd be very grateful.

Hide images
Images are replaced with a link. This may corrupt some messages.

Hide Jon (i like images in general)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think it is particularly whining. A load of pictures make ILX really a pain to read, as it shoots all over the place as they load.

Plus the guy who's bandwidth you are piggy-backing on will probably come and kick your ass at somepoint.

___ (___), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, have no reason to have any opinion on you at all. You would probably be happy if you managed to have any effect on me.

response = "meh".

Dear Mr Looper, I have no idea who you are, and I have never met any of the people on this great board, but there are specific image threads that exist solely for just the sort of thing you excel at.

> is there any way to do a multi-topic forum just using PHP?

recent php versions support flat-file databases, er, sqllite i think it's called. http://pecl.php.net/package/SQLite but whether you'd want to base anything heavy on this is another question.

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

fyi the orig greenspun server was tcl and the current ilx one, borrowing some concept and interface stuff but with strong modifications, was rewritten from scratch.

Greenspun's book is at:

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

57 7th (calstars), Thursday, 27 May 2004 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

-whether you'd want to base anything heavy on this is another question

Andy - your bank account is highly likely to involve flat files somewhere along the line or hierarchical databases at best.

Keep your money in a sock, it's safest that way.
