Windows Media Player - WHY DOES IT SUCK SO BAD?

I'm using a brand new Dell (don't scoff) at work. This computer is nice, and fast, and basically fine in every single way EXCEPT for some reason whenever I'm listening to a CD on Windows Media Player there's inevitably a skip or burble or some sort of fuckup, no matter what condition the CD is in (this has happened on brand new ones as well as used ones). WHY? WHO THINKS THIS IS SOME SORT OF STANDARD?

It has to check that you are not playing a dodgy Rolling Stones CDr.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:04 (nineteen years ago) link

are you doing lots of cpu intensive shit? digital playback in WMP uses the CPU, so you might get better luck making it do analog playback which is controller just via the CD drive!

dude I'm mostly just like surfing the web and occasionally using Word.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:16 (nineteen years ago) link

try that though

I have this same problem at work. I think that it is the drive that that Dell uses. All of the ones in our office are so loud and sound like they're about to spin out of control, that the CD is always messed up. I usually just rip the CD and play it from mp3s.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:32 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, the drive is super-loud, too.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:32 (nineteen years ago) link

try downloading winamp from winamp.com and see if it helps.

Hiccups in performance of PC's CD player <= try this one.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeh, stence... windows media player is certainly not the best player out there, but if you're having trouble playing plain old CDs then it's likely there's something going on with your drive more than software.

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:39 (nineteen years ago) link

fuck a Dell.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:39 (nineteen years ago) link

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:56 (nineteen years ago) link

okay hstencil, go into device manager, click on your CD Drive and then click on properties. the default should be set at "allow digital playback"... unclick the box. apparently this feature is a big memory suck.

screw it, I'm downloading iTunes.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 May 2004 20:47 (nineteen years ago) link

in a similar vein, is there any way (or patch) to make windows/wmp able to read the duration and bit rate of VBR audio files correctly?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 27 May 2004 21:36 (nineteen years ago) link

much as I'm loathe to admit it, iTunes has been way better so far.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 28 May 2004 13:50 (nineteen years ago) link

of course it is.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 28 May 2004 14:17 (nineteen years ago) link

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 28 May 2004 14:33 (nineteen years ago) link

OKAY FUCK iTUNES TOO! It just mistook my new Tod Dockstader CD for Robert Wyatt?!?!? What the fuck?!?!?!

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 28 May 2004 14:33 (nineteen years ago) link

i like winamp better than itunes.

(hstence it's probably cddb's fault not itunes')

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 28 May 2004 14:47 (nineteen years ago) link

well I can't figure out how to change CDDB's bullshit off my iTunes, where as winamp was easy to edit shit. MOTHERFUCK THIS! Computers suck.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 28 May 2004 14:49 (nineteen years ago) link

winamp knows who Tod Dockstader is. Apple "avant-garde" "cutting edge" MY BLACK ASS!

Lazer Guided Mellow Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 02:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Lady, if you can't figure out iTunes... Just hit "Enter" and rename it. It's CDDB's (Gracenote's?) fault.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 20:06 (nineteen years ago) link

three years pass...

On my Media Player 11 half of the album arts are The Cure's Disintegration, for some reason. I've never even played that shit, so what the fuck is going on here?

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 9 March 2008 13:21 (sixteen years ago) link

Perhaps it is some sort of spooky warning, like in a Stephen King novel.

Bodrick III, Sunday, 9 March 2008 14:05 (sixteen years ago) link

Nobody uses WMP. Install iTunes.

libcrypt, Sunday, 9 March 2008 14:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Winamp for me.

Bodrick III, Sunday, 9 March 2008 14:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Media Monkey for me.

tremendoid, Sunday, 9 March 2008 14:26 (sixteen years ago) link

Hate iTunes. WMP has never actively annoyed me that much that I could be bothered to mess about with other players, but I'm trying out the Quintessential player at the moment and it seems okay.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 9 March 2008 14:26 (sixteen years ago) link

The polar opposite of iTunes is foobar, so if you hate iTunes, maybe you'd love foobar.

libcrypt, Sunday, 9 March 2008 14:32 (sixteen years ago) link

An OCD pal of mine thinks that foobar should be its own operating system.

libcrypt, Sunday, 9 March 2008 14:35 (sixteen years ago) link

it's like a rubik's cube. don't know why people want to complicate their lives in that way.

tremendoid, Sunday, 9 March 2008 14:36 (sixteen years ago) link

ok maybe ocd explains it.

tremendoid, Sunday, 9 March 2008 14:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Anyway this is all interesting but can anybody answer my original question? I.E. why the fuck is WMP doing that?

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 9 March 2008 14:55 (sixteen years ago) link

It's what we here in the Software Delolopment Industry call a bug.

libcrypt, Sunday, 9 March 2008 17:29 (sixteen years ago) link

I hate iTunes, love WMP

Curt1s Stephens, Monday, 10 March 2008 07:03 (sixteen years ago) link

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 10 March 2008 07:13 (sixteen years ago) link

the Microsoft team is just finding out about people having trouble with their album art database in WMP 11, so it's too soon to ask us amateurs about it :-)

most of the questions here seem to be about how to remove or hide the album art, so I'm sure they know about it by now - fixed in the next update, maybe?
