Here in the UK we have fewer public holidays than anyone else in Europe.

We need a new one. But when should it be? And what should we call it?

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 28 May 2004 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I reckon some bank holiday fridays are called for. Long w/e's ahoy!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 28 May 2004 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i heard on the news they are actually lobbying for an extra one with possible dates including New Year's Eve, the patron Saint days (so it would be a Bank Holiday in Scotland but not England or Wales and thrice versa) or sometime in October

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 May 2004 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

someone emailed BBC Breakfast to say that All Saints Day should be a Bank Holiday.

Patron saints days would be annoying.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 28 May 2004 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, it would be annoying if you lived on the border of England and Wales or England and Scotland and yr mates had a bank holiday and you didn't coz you were on the wrong side of the divide.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 28 May 2004 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

there are prolly some business reasons why it would be annoying too.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 28 May 2004 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Some time in the long drag between August and Xmas seems like the sensible choice. Like maybe around early October. Let's say, ooh, my birthday?

Tim (Tim), Friday, 28 May 2004 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

"Why do we call this Bank Holiday Hopkins Day, Mummy?"

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 28 May 2004 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

You should get Valentine's day as a holiday so that you can avoid the smug expression on the face of the person in the office who gets the huge bouquet delivered. It should be a school holiday too so that poor wee souls like me don't have the humiliation of having the fact that they didn't get any cards pointed out to them all day.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 28 May 2004 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

National Stevem Week

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 May 2004 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

actually that pretty much happened a fortnight ago

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 May 2004 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

If Valentine's Day was a public holiday I would be THE HAPPIEST MAN ALIVE. My birthday, off work, every day for the rest of my life. I may start petitioning the government now.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 28 May 2004 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

See, I quite like the idea of December 19 as a holiday, cos that's the day AFTER my birthday, when ruinous headaches abound and a long lie is much needed.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 28 May 2004 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

tsk, too close to Christmas.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 28 May 2004 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

They'll give us an extra Bank Holiday but they'll give us it on February 29th, the bastids

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 28 May 2004 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Blame my parents (xpost)

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 28 May 2004 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

National Ligament Day!

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 28 May 2004 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Remember a few years back when we had 4 bank holidays in one month - easter was late, and so we had IIRC May Day one week, then Good Friday, then Easter Monday then Spring Bank. Anyway, it was like having a 4 days week for a month, and it was magnificent. The frenchies have the right idea here.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 28 May 2004 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Can Easter ever fall in May? That doesn't seem right somehow.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 28 May 2004 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

No it can't. Easter can never occur before March 22 or later than April 25

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 28 May 2004 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 28 May 2004 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

we need less bank holidays. they satisfy solely skiving socialists.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 28 May 2004 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Not true - the UKIP is campaigning for St George's Day to be made a bank holiday. There might be votes in that one.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 28 May 2004 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

It was 2000 - sequence was three bank holiday weeks in a row, followed by three weeks then another bank holiday. My brane has trciked me such was the reverie.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 28 May 2004 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

not too many in Wales and Scotland, I suspect.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 28 May 2004 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

(xpost to matt)

And what about St Andrew's Day, St Patrick's Day and St David's Day?

That is, if they are serious about calling themselves the UK Independence Party. I mean we can't have one rule for one lot and another for everyone else. Even though, in calling for withdrawal from the EU, that's exactly what the UKIP stands for.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 28 May 2004 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I suspect that if we left the EU we would have to annex Norway or at least send the fleet in to annex their territorial waters and seize their oilfields, seeing as the richest fields are in their part of the North Sea and it is only the existence of same that allows them to do nicely thank you whilst not being in the EU.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 28 May 2004 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The other fields being in Scotland's part of the North Sea of course

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 28 May 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't we just annex Geir Hongro?

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 28 May 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

What's in it for us tho?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 28 May 2004 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The return of Glen Michael?

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 28 May 2004 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I am quite proud of the blatantness of the Irish bank holidays: they're there because we wanted them. Thus May/June/August/October Bank Holiday, simple like.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 28 May 2004 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

the obvious candidate for an extra day is a friday late October to break the gap between late August BH and Christmas

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 28 May 2004 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

So that's where most of the North Sea Oil went, into fucking Paladin

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 28 May 2004 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

which beer do you think would be first to hi-jack st. george's day guinness-style then?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 28 May 2004 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Mid October. My birthday (14th) - we can call it Battle of Hastings Day or summat.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 28 May 2004 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

my birthday june 10th - European Election Day Bank Holiday

ken c (ken c), Friday, 28 May 2004 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

It's already happened, last St George's Day, can't remember which beer it was tho

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 28 May 2004 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Bombardier wasn't it? or Greene King~?

chris (chris), Friday, 28 May 2004 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Mid October. My birthday (14th) - we can call it Battle of Hastings Day or summat

unfortunately, my birthday, three days later, only falls on the feast day of one St. Ignatius of Antioch. Not much love for the boy Iggy, sadly.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 28 May 2004 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope he gets a lot of love in Antioch.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 28 May 2004 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

only from amorous lions, it seems.....

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 28 May 2004 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

that's disgusting

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 May 2004 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Which one is giving away flags? "That must be what your left arm is for", etc. Carling, I think.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 28 May 2004 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Siegfried & Ignatius were the leading draw of their day at Caesar's palace in Antioch

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 28 May 2004 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Why would any want to have a holiday inside a bank?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 28 May 2004 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

They get to play with the pens

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 28 May 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

The Carling one's for the footie though, surely

Simon (né flameproof) (Flameproof), Friday, 28 May 2004 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

also, st andrew's day is a public holiday in scotland isn't it?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 28 May 2004 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

but if they are serious about being a UNITED KINGDOM Independence Party they should not be campaigning for separatist bank holidays.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 28 May 2004 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Steve, no it isn't.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 28 May 2004 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)
