So who is going to read Bill Clinton's autobiography "My Life" and tell us about it?

Surely someone has an advance copy. It comes out in three weeks.

amateur!st (amateurist), Saturday, 29 May 2004 07:39 (twenty-two years ago)

has any presidential memoir ever been worth reading ever?

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Saturday, 29 May 2004 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I would like to read it.

I would like to see him pay tribute to Hillary.

the billfox, Saturday, 29 May 2004 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

that settled then? the hillafox 'll read and tell us all about it?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 29 May 2004 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I would like to see him pay tribute to Peter Brotzmann.

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 29 May 2004 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

That was probably the most jaw-dropping thing I've read in the last ten years. It's enough to make me take my copy of "Nipples" to his office in Harlem someday to try to get him to autograph it. Or maybe "Fuck De Boere."

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 29 May 2004 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope to find out he made some of his decisions based on the outcome of a rock-paper-scissors game with a monkey.

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 29 May 2004 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I really wish he'd cover "It's My Life" for the tv ads.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 29 May 2004 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Dr Alban or Bon Jovi?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 29 May 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Talk Talk, actually

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 29 May 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

only if he's backed by a church choir

I might read this book actually. These pics are reminding me how much I miss him.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 29 May 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a moment like that too, recently...it was like, holy cow, we had this guy for president? I even voted for him?! Wow. Not that he was perfect or anything, by no means, but still...

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 29 May 2004 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

It feels weird to think that there ever was a president who didn't fill me with knee-jerk hatred.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 29 May 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

When reading Clinton's speech to the Democratic Governor's Convention in Salon a few months ago it struck me that I was reading a rational speech that at least SEEMED to respect my intelligence. So go him.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 29 May 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

...which only proves he knows how to pick speechwriters. Which is still nothing to sneeze at.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 29 May 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

it really isn't

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 29 May 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

his chief speechwriter was a Naderite punk rock lover

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 29 May 2004 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i am sure when the book comes out it will be met with great praise about it's style and flash but as usuaul no one will remember a word contained within. for all of his proficiency at public-speaking he never made a single memorable speech. or did he? i think his ease in front of a crowd was more narcissism than anything else and he probably didn't think he needed to say anything of substance to overwhelm the love the crowd had for him. he was the perfect president for the times then, celebrity in chief.

keith m (keithmcl), Saturday, 29 May 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

the speechwriting chief of staff was the rather fantastic woman in the center of the top left picture on this communications-staff-filled page

xpost: this conservative and his family were personally affected, even before Clinton got into the White House, by Clinton's repetition of themes he sounded frequently in speeches.

Clinton's ease in front of a crowd contained more narcissism than any other act in history? I suppose you will be remembered for your excellence in spelling, contraction, word choice, etc.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 29 May 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I do agree, however, that while Clinton's celebrity was good politics and would argue that it was justified (maybe) by an interest in combatting apathy, I did not appreciate it for the way it helped render the President a more powerful cult of personality (further realized, if temporarily, by the current occupant of the office), thereby increasing Executive power (to set the agenda, at least) at the expense of the Legislature. I admit that in certain respects (intellect and 'soul' and real humility and optimism and empathy and chutzpah), I liked him very much, though in others ('charm' and faux-humility and weakness and caution), I did not.

blowjobs and cattle futures vs. World War III and billion-dollar white collar crime

World War III

or Vietnam II: Electric Boogaloo, if you prefer

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 29 May 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I too am trying to remember that only four years ago we had Clinton as president.. Man, I miss him. Can't wait to read this. I still remember back in middle school, turning on late-night TV for the Arsenio Hall show & seeing him playing the saxophone.

Recently I found in my files some French newsmagazines I'd bought when I was over there during the 2000 elections, including Libération's special section giving a really fond and wistful goodbye to Bill Clinton.. as well as a Marianne feature on "10 Reasons to Be Afraid of George W" which turned out to be quite prophetic..

daria g (daria g), Saturday, 29 May 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Can you detail those 10 reasons, pls?

TheNewJMod (JMod), Saturday, 29 May 2004 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

well, u.s. grant's memoirs are very honest and penetrating, for one. but that's going back a bit.

amateur!st (amateurist), Saturday, 29 May 2004 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I certainly appreciate him a lot more now that I've experienced the alternative.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Saturday, 29 May 2004 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Hopefully I will remember to post something on the 10 reasons when I get a chance - I just moved and my stuff is all packed away and some in storage, so it could take me a while to find it. Stuff about how he was controlled by the religious right and how his hardline policy people might want to start a war, as well as remarks about the possibility of terrorist attacks (& W's inability to prepare for this) I believe.. It was spot-on. The cover was absolutely classic as well - it featured a historical article on.. basically, major leaders in history who were.. uh.. not too bright. The cover story headline: "Les cretins qui nous gouvernent" i.e. "The idiots that govern us," over top of a really unflattering photo of Dubya giving the thumbs-up. And this was, like, November 2000..

daria g (daria g), Sunday, 30 May 2004 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

That conservative is a dick. Thank God my family didn't push me into some white-collar degree so I could be a yuppie drone. How dare kids "find themselves," it's the job that matters! (Somewhat illustrative of my problem with Clinton and the neo-libs in general, actually.)
