I have £30 or £40 in bullshit late-fee charges (dating from the postal strike) that I want to get rid of. I hear it can be quite easy. Am I misinformed?

Cant you ring up the credit card company and tell them? It's quite easy for them to verify and many others have probably complained about this as well.

but if it's genuinely because of postal strike then write/phone them about it.

xpost, xpost, etc. Call and complain. Call again and ask if it has been done. Tell them you plan to cancel your card and switch to a different bank ("I got an offer to transfer my balance at $2.9% for 6 months..." etc.). If you don't have a history of late fees, they will probably remove them. Also, if you pay an annual fee, ask them to credit that back to you as well bacause your "other offer" has no fee.

The economics of customer retention vs. new customer acquisition are such that it's MUCH cheaper to keep you than to get you in the first place. Therefore, there's a lot of leeway to keep you happy. This only applies if you actually do pay your bills on time most of the time. If you look like a credit risk, they'll be less likely to work with you.
