don (don), Sunday, 30 May 2004 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

1. Grab the nearest book to you, turn to page 18, line 7. Read what it says:

"On a smaller scale, ethnic violence is common in Burundi, Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire and several other African countries" (that was the sentence that started on line 7, anyway)

2. Stretch out your left hand as far as you can. What do you touch first?

A blue and white plate that maybe my dad gave me - I feel bad I don't know. It has foreign coins on it.

3. What was the last thing you watched on tv?

I flicked on earlier, but there was nothing I wanted. I don't watch much TV anymore so I can't remember the last thing I watched. Maybe The 411 on TOTP.

4. Without looking, guess what time it is:

3.50

5. Look at the clock. What time is the actual time?

3.12

6. With the exception of the computer, what do you hear?

Not a sound.

I was coming back from the Indian take-away.

8. Before you did this survey, what were you looking at?

The New Answers page. Before that, the Ricardo Villalobos album on Amazon.

9. What are you wearing?

My favourite Caterpillar jeans, now wearing thin over the knees. Beaten up brown and white zip-up trainers that I just put on for going to the take-away.

10. Did you dream last night?

I'm sure I did, but I can't remember what.

11. When did you last laugh?

Last night, I think. At something Cozen or RJG said.

12. What are on the walls in the room you are in?

Nothing. They're bare. I've been meaning to do something about this ever since I moved in in 2002. But it's kind of a minimalist flat, so it looks quite good without anything.

13. See anything weird lately?

Some has prominently written 'Costcutter 2001' or something in the cement outside the local 24 hour shop, but I had never noticed it until this evening.

14. What do you think of this quiz?

It's OK. The questions are much better than the usual. The book and dream ones are a bit vaguely worded.

15. What was the last film you saw?

'Bad Education'

16. If you became a multi-millionaire overnight, what would you buy first?

A nice breakfast.

17. Tell me something about you that I don't know:

The only cat my family has ever owned was called Snow White and she was very sweet-natured, not even making a fuss when we stood on her tail (by mistake).

18. If you could change one thing about the world, regardless of guilt or politics, what would you do?

I don't really understand the 'regardless of guilt or politics' bit. Everything health-related I think of is either trivial or else makes 'ooh, overpopulation though' bells ring. OK, carry out all building that need doing, inc. new homes for the homeless and repairs for everywhere else.

19. Do you like to dance?

I love to dance.

20. George W. Bush:

Too old testament.

21. Imagine your first child is a girl.

That's great. I'd love to have a daughter. She'd maybe be called Loretta.

22. Imagine your first child is a boy.

That's great. I love the idea of having a son. He'd maybe be called Cyrus.

11:00

About 15 hours ago. I rode my scooter home after having dinner at Denny's.

8. Before you did this survey, what were you looking at?

I was looking outside at the real estate agent who is trying to sell the lot across the alleyway. The old house is sitting there 3/4 demolished. It's been in that state for weeks, and the agent has been sitting at his fold-up table every weekend for the last 6 months. It's a depressing scene.

9. What are you wearing?

A t-shirt. Nike mesh shorts. It's hot.

I dream every night. I can't recall it right now though.

11. When did you last laugh?

12. What are on the walls in the room you are in?

13. See anything weird lately?

Probably.

14. What do you think of this quiz?

It's long, but entertaining.

15. What was the last film you saw?

I saw 'Legal Eagles' last night. It was so-so, but Robert Redford is great. What ever happened to Debra Winger? She was a big-time star.

A car. A Mini Cooper. Then a motorcycle. Then a RAM upgrade for my iBook.

Most everything, I believe. Mango is my favorite fruit.

18. If you could change one thing about the world, regardless of guilt or politics, what would you do?

I don't know. No domestic violence or child abuse.

19. Do you like to dance?

Sometimes. Basically, yes.

Outrage.

Joy

I do live abroad.

15. starsky and hutch.

16. i'd put it all into teledildonics research. actually, i don't know, there's nothing much new and shiny i'm lusting after lately... i need a new computer though, this one has more spyware on it than inspector gadget.

17. as an sickly youngster, i once had to spend some time in an oxygen tent.

18. bring back 'the critic' for another season, without the character modifications they were starting to make in the 2nd.

19. yeah. depending on the crowd, i get selfconscious sometimes in public, but recently i've noticed myself doing it at home, so yeah.

20. will be remembered unfondly.

21. it's very difficult to imagine me having kids at all. i'm good with them, i just can't picture one of my own.

22. see above.

A large square glass paperweight, etched like a noughts-and-crosses board, with red hearts in place of the noughts. It was a valentine's day present from my man.

Lots of framed family photos, a large cork noticeboard, 3 beech wood shelves filled with files, 2 beech wood racks filled with CDs, a Wallace & Gromit clock, 2 large glass clip-frames filled with Wallace & Gromit pictures cut from calendars, one very large black spider ambling slowly around the top of the wall and headed towards the window.

17. Tell me something about you that I don't know:

I am terrified of being buried alive.

18. If you could change one thing about the world, regardless of guilt or politics, what would you do?

I'd have the UK towed several hundred miles south to make it warmer. I would also wish that people could be more tolerant of each other but I can't see what change I could make to force people do that.

Yup.

20. George W. Bush:
Urgh

21. Imagine your first child is a girl.

10. Did you dream last night?
Not that I recall.

11. When did you last laugh?
Not sure - probably yesterday sometime.

13. See anything weird lately?
Nope.

14. What do you think of this quiz?
It's a good one.

The Good Girl last night - in fact I wrote about it on FT, specifically on Proven By Science. You'll have to take a look to see why it's on the science section.

Probably loads more music.

17. Tell me something about you that I don't know:
I'm going to a party tonight.

18. If you could change one thing about the world, regardless of guilt or politics, what would you do?

Love it - might do some at that party tonight.

20. George W. Bush:
Despise him on predictable grounds. I can't imagine there is much in the political arena where we are not very opposed.

Air.

3. What was the last thing you watched on tv?

CNN reporting about the hostage release in Khobar, Saudi Arabia.

4. Without looking, guess what time it is:

9:15 am

9:20 am

6. With the exception of the computer, what do you hear?

An mp3 of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue".

I walked from E.9th Street to W.51st street this morning at 7am on my way to work (Sunday shift).

8. Before you did this survey, what were you looking at?

Random threads on ILE and ILM.

9. What are you wearing?

Black Vans. Grey socks from Patagonia. Blue Jeans (from Earl Jeans). Boxers. A blue Fred Perry shirt with lime green tipping. An embarassing purple sweatshirt (`cos, as usual, it's fucking freezing in this office).

10. Did you dream last night?

Probably

11. When did you last laugh?

This morning, listening to my co-worker tell an anecdote.

12. What are on the walls in the room you are in?

Well, we're moving offices next week, so most everything's been stripped off the walls. There is still, however, a large map of Iraq and a picture of Joe Strummer torn from the pages of Mojo that dates back to the announcement of the great man's passing.

13. See anything weird lately?

Weird is a relative term, but while watching "The Restaurant" last night (sorry, I know), there was a close-up of a guy with a tatoo from the artwork to the Stones' Voodoo Lounge album, which struck me a very fuckin' weird. I mean, if you're dead set on getting a tatoo, and you're determined that it be from a Stones album, why on God's Green Fuckin' Earth would you choose that particular image?

14. What do you think of this quiz?

I'm enjoying it. The Sunday shift here at the News Desk is a herculean excercise in pointlessness. Even if huge news breaks, it's entirely unlikely that we we try to put it in the magazine at this point (too expensive, and it won't make every edition). But thanks to "The War on Terror", "The New Reality", etc. etc., we are now staffed here until 5pm on Sundays. I need everything I can get ahold of to pass the time.

15. What was the last film you saw?

Bits of "Jaws" last night, which is one of my faves.

Idiot. Embarassment. Worst American President ever. If you vote for him again, shame on you.

Funny you should mention it, she was a girl.

Charlotte would've been named Oliver.

Emily shakeshaft, Wednesday, 26 April 2006 08:05 (twenty years ago)

It's confusing when people don't put the original question alongside their answer.

When I saw Emily's "about a week a ago before i broke up with my boyf" I assumed the question was "When did you last have sex?".

Then I read above, and was mildly surprised at how recently everyone seemed to have had it.

Then answers like:

This morning, listening to my co-worker tell an anecdote.

Probably a few hours ago before I saw the mess

My cat just did something funny i think, 1 hour ago,

made me realise something was up.

Laughing, not sex. I see.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 08:40 (twenty years ago)

But... I always have sex when my cat does something funny.

I hope you feel happier soon Emily.
