Troma C/D - S/D?

Having recently met and chatted to Lloyd Kaufman, I'm wondering what the general opinion is on Troma films?

Of their in house productions, I think the first "Toxic Avenger" is fucking hilarious, and parts of the first sequel are quite funny too (the totally un-PC Toxie in Japan sequence is hilarious), but the rest of their output is nigh on unwatchable.

Of their acquisitions, the "South Park" team's "Cannibal the Musical" is a true gem, and "Mother's Day" is a fairly nasty little exploitation shocker, but the rest range from dull arthouse (Sam Fuller's "Shark"/ Argento's "The Stendhal Syndrome") to dull shlock ("Combat Shock", "New Gladiators").

Dud. Never thought they were that funny or inspired.

I met a lawyer for them once. They stay in business by buying up rights to older straight-to-video flicks, whose ownership is often muddled, to say the least. So he figures out exactly who owns what percentage of, like, Zombie Killers 4, and they go around buying the stuff up. It's like some long-term plan that they don't even understand themselves.

Agree about "Cannibal the Musical" that's some funny shit.
But nevermind that we wanna see pics of you with Lloyd Kaufman!
Is he pulling a silly face? Come on CRW don't disappoint.

I've always had a soft spot for Tromeo & Juliet. It was pretty hilarious in high school anyways, and it's got Lemmy narrating!

Cannibal! is beyond classic, but I don't really consider it a Troma film except for the fact that they put up the money.

I don't have a pic of me and Lloyd and I've not transcribed the interview yet. All I can tell you is that when I said, "where should we do this?" - he pointed to two good looking blonde girls (it was Cannes) and said, "let's sit next to them, they're hot". Five minutes later he had one girl's business card and, seeing as she was from New York, asked her to come by his office...

The girl's web site is www.amydorris.com (I - ahem - got her card too) and she was indeed very, very sexy.

I think I'm going to just paste CRW's post as my response to every thread.

I went to the Tromadance film festival because I was in a short film that opened the first one back in 2000, and was included on their video collection "Soiled Shorts". Lloyd Kaufman let me and my two friends crash in the Troma motel room.

It's all about Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD.

chaki_burger (chaki), Sunday, 30 May 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Slutty girls in the film industry? Are you serious? Stop it.

CRW (CRW), Sunday, 30 May 2004 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't really like any of the movies, but Lloyd's book is a good plane/bathroom read.

Tromeo and Juliet is k-classic. Well, I love it, anyway. The Toxic Avenger is pretty great at times. Terror Firmer's also good. And that's about everything Troma I enjoy.

I met Lloyd in 2000, I think? at a Troma film festival in TX. He was nice and gave me a comic book, but mostly talked about his new book at the time, trying to convince me to buy it.

Bless USA Up All Night (w/ host Gilbert Gottfried) for finally showing me these flicks at the ripe age of 14

so CRW is calum, right? he totally seems like the type who'd like this crap.

oooooooops, Monday, 31 May 2004 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

"good plane/bathroom read. "

i read that as "good plane bathroom read." which made me wonder if the book was equipped with those antishake devices used for steadicams.

Haha, it'd have to be a lot shorter as well.

I never said I liked their stuff, read my initial post you twerp. Troma's inhouse productions are invariably dud and always star Lemmy and Ron Jeremy.

CRW (CRW), Monday, 31 May 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The first DVD I ever saw was Troma's "Bloodsucking Freaks" and I loved it. The interactive menus and extras were far more imaginative than any other DVD I've yet seen. But then, I was watching it with a bunch of people and getting drunk at a party. Wouldn't want to watch Troma alone and sober, I'm guessing.

sgs (sgs), Monday, 31 May 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"Bloodsucking Freaks" is one of these films I class under, "reprehensible". I'd maybe watch it again at knife point.

CRW (CRW), Monday, 31 May 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Bloodsucking Freaks was made by porn people which is why its so icky.

My favorite movie that Troma distributed would have to be: Caution-Children At Play. One of my favorite killer kidz movies ever.

I almost got an internship at Troma years ago when my beardo friend totally cockblocked me. Their dingy main office had 20 crates full of Surf Nazis Must Die DVDs. It could've been heaven.

burt_stanton, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

my roommate in college was an intern there for a while and quickly became in charge of acquisitions since kaufman couldn't suffer paying an actual staff. said roommate went on to show his penis on british tv for the (very short run) troma tv series, as i'm told

Class of Nuke'em High might be the perfect '80s high school movie.

The Flautist of Flatus (Old Lunch), Saturday, 25 February 2017 02:08 (nine years ago)

A double feature of this and Rock and Roll High School might be awesome enough to melt off an entire audience worth of faces.

The Flautist of Flatus (Old Lunch), Saturday, 25 February 2017 02:12 (nine years ago)

I need to rewatch Class of Nuke 'Em High. One of my biggest disappointments was getting beaten out on doing an internship with Troma back in college. My classmate who got it told me they had boxes filled with unsold DVDs of Surf Nazis Must Die.
