do you ever call someone up when you're drunk and then feel really stupid about it?

This used to be a constant problem when I was single.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 30 May 2004 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone does it. The person you did it too will have done it to someone else.

Excuse bad spelling, no sleep and extremely grumpy.

it makes me never want to call anyone again.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 30 May 2004 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I actually lost a friend because of this. Bummer. I don't think I even said anything untoward or anything like that, I think she was just annoyed that I called in that state at all. Oh well.

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 30 May 2004 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I curse whoever invented text messaging because of this.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 30 May 2004 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Not much of a friend then, innit.

i do this. no-one is safe. me and rainy rang up my dad drunk once, and sang "hit me baby one more time" to him. last weekend i rang my boyf at 2:30am. it was 7:30am where he lives. and sometimes i rang my friends in auckland. what is it with me, booze and toll calls???

the best drunken phone call i've received was on my birthday a couple of years ago, my brother (who i don't get along with) called me from aussie, to tell me about his girlfriend dumping him cos he punched some guy she was talking to. my inner monologue was going "yes! ha ha! you sucker! that'll learn you! etc etc"

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Sunday, 30 May 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I did this last night and made up with my ladyfriend and got laid! yay

"Friends Don't Let Friends Drink And Dial". of course, drinking and dialing is usually a lonely occupation.
A large group of friends called me from a bar to wish me a happy birthday. They were all drunk - one friend held his cell phone up so i could hear the song...I could also hear a huge diminishing from Happy birthday to dear!...(Alison) ...because the rest of the bar joined in but didn't know my name. Anyway, i was home, and picked up too late, so i called them...and noone wanted to talk to me because they were heading out to another bar! And it was a month after my actual birthday! But i was still charmed and pleased.

Yeah, that's kinda what I was thinking. Which is why I wasn't too broken up about it. Still, she was pretty cool and I did like hanging out with her. the weird thing was that this woman was, like, by no means a tee-totaler herself, although she really didn't drink to excess. But I remember at least one night we went to a bar and I had to pour her into a cab. Who knows.

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 30 May 2004 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The last time I did this (I think; it was a long time ago), it was on the way home after mistakenly getting off the subway two stops early, and apparently it occurred during a mild earthquake that I had no idea was happening. I had no regrets later.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 30 May 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't stand people who break off friendships over petty things. They're never worth the effort to keep as friends, because they just do it all again. There are loads of people who aren't that precious, so it's not really a loss.

DUD when you call for the reasons stated, makes for an emotionally complicated hangover. what did I say? Even worse when you don't remember calling and get reminded the next day. what did I say?
CLASSIC when you receive the tipsy call. Sometimes. Once my sister, basically a non-drinker, range me at 3:00 AM "three sheets to the wind" (as grandpa used to say) because I was the only person who could settle a music-trivia bet she and her vacationing gal-pals were arguing about. Can't remember the question but I'll never forget the call.

CANBERRA (Reuters) - An Australian phone company is offering customers the chance to blacklist numbers before heading out for a night on the town so they can reduce the risk of making any embarrassing, incoherent late-night calls.

I need this feature very badly. I also need it right now--this second. You're next M____!!!

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 05:53 (twenty-one years ago)

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 05:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Mittens. Start wearing mittens for a while and then blame any and all subsequent electronic correspondence on the mittens.

"Sorry about that email last night, dude/honey/Mom, it's these fucking mittens!!"

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 05:58 (twenty-one years ago)

what a great idea!

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 06:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet I'd dial less easily with mittens on, too.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 06:11 (twenty-one years ago)

There is a great embarrassing-drunken-phone-call scene in Sideways.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 06:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Mitten roulette: slap at the phone for a while and see what happens. Close your eyes, too, if you're wearing those bullshit thin mitten-liners; fuckers are practically gloves which is Russian for practically CHEATING.

one time i was blasted drunk at a friend's house and called my SISTER and left her this really interesting voice mail apparently in near hysterics over whether or not my sister and my friend would get along. I have no idea what was wrong with me.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 06:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't have a cell phone FOR THIS REASON ALONE!!

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 09:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a great idea for cellphones. Rather than MP3 players and cameras, I think they should be fitted with breathalysers.

3underscore (___), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
The New York Times runs an Op-Ed piece on drunk dialing. As if it's a novel concept that came with invention of the cellular phone.

Seriously, what editor thought that a) this was an amusing article and b) that it deserved space?
