my dad calls it "the utility room", my mum on the other hand, calls it "the pantry". men and women be aspiring to different household images!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

does it have a window?

I don't think so. I might have to check.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Kitchen! Garden! Bladdy middle classes! Grumble grumble crimble cromble.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

This is an extremely middle class thread yes.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

caveat, my parents are not like upwardly mobile or anything!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I want my pantry to have only one door. my utility room can have two. I think it is a mattter of function though (ts: preserves and spices Vs. a washing machine & dryer.)

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

a pantry really doesn't have much space, unless it's walk-in

the surface noise is one of tremendous importance to connoisseurs of histor (ele, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

the room between my kitchen and garden is called a 'living room'.

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Not really middle class, council houses have kitchens and some of them even have gardens!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, the pantry shouldn't really be 'between' anything, in a connecty way

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

In my grandmother's house it's a scullery. I doubt any sculling has ever been done there though.

In fact, what she calls the scullery I would call the kitchen (as it contains the oven, sink, fridge etc) and what she calls the kitchen I would call the dining room (big table, dresser etc).

She also has both a deep freeze and a toilet in her garage (next to the scullery), which complicates things even further.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Scullery is a small kitchen surely?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Scullery = A small room adjoining a kitchen, in which dishwashing and other kitchen chores are done.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

hence where the scullery maid lives. I see.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Not that my grandmother has a scullery maid, of course.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

duh, the hallway, surely??

stevie (stevie), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

In France it's been traditionally referred to as the "T'aint De La Maison".

LC, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

In one house I lived in, we called it "the toilet".

robster (robster), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The first house I lived in we had a scullery, that's what my mum called it, we didn't have a kitchen as such

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

what is in this room, ronan? no window? do you have a sink/any machines (washing/drying), in? I want to help you but, first, you have to help me.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I think of a pantry as being a walk-in store cupboard (although maybe this is a larder?).

I'm with utility room or scullery for Ronan's room.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought this was going to be about "conservatories."
yeah, the pantry shouldn't really be 'between' anything, in a connecty way
...unless it's a butler's pantry.

sgs (sgs), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

My mum could be wrong.

It has a window! But it's a window above, like a skylight. It has a washing machine, and some presses containing food, but also a press containing the mop and some presses containing tools and nails and things.

It's not quite between the garden and the house I guess, there are 4 doors, one from the kitchen, one leading to a toilet/shower, one leading to a small garage, and one leading into what can only be described as a CONSERVATORY.

I think utility room would suit except for the shower in the bathroom. For years I have been calling it "in there", I can't imagine calling it anything else, really.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I think utility room or in there are the more reasonable names, for it.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The Back Porch

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

my other entrance is a porch.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

the shed

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Futility room.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

nah that's my bedroom jerry

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

*SNARE DRUM*

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Conservatory.

When I was little, I used to think Tories were so called because they all had conservatories.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

there already is a conservatory, I often feel as though fate is compelling me to murder someone there, with a candlestick??? Like someone is controlling me somehow????

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you have secret passages as well, Ronan?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Laundry room? Or is that just silly?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

no it's a not really a big house, I knew it would seem like it was, I am unsure if any ilxors have been here, probably not, wait Kilian has been in my house! do you remember that room Kilian? what would you call it?

laundry room is a good idea I think. sounds more utilitarian than utility room.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Why is your food in presses? Is it not flat enough already?

Ricardo (RickyT), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

CUPBOARD is too wind in the willows.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

American shelter mags would probably call it a mudroom.
