My bulk mail folder is filled with the likes of surface noise and Deanomgwtf trying to sell me insurance or viagra. If it's spam, how is this happening? anyone getting any from me?

if it's not spam, well then Roxymuzak, yes I'd be interested in talking home mortgages with you in the future, thx for the email.

Yeah, I got one from listed as being from siegbran about something random with a suspicious .exe file attached, and a subsequent warning from some random address saying they'd detected an e-mail virus that had come from my inbox as a result. I don't know what the deal is with it. I think there was a thread detailing a similar problem before but I forget the title.

Fergal (Ferg), Sunday, 13 June 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

have you ever sent email to any of those people? there is some virus that fills in the from line when it reaches you from addresses in your mail program, I think. Otherwise, maybe someone ELSE has you and them in their Outlook and has the virus. I don't know. I get bounced fucking virus spam that say they're from me all the time and I def. don't have any viruses active on my machine though. it is a weird internet filled with mysterious shit.

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 13 June 2004 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i got one from Spencer Chow, hotmail recommended it should be deleted - neither of us have ever exchanged e-mails before.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 13 June 2004 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Doesn't the one from Deanomgwtf have a higher than average chance of being genuine?

Patrick Kinghorn, Sunday, 13 June 2004 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I got one from Texas Sam - neither of us have ever exchanged emails before.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Sunday, 13 June 2004 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 13 June 2004 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a virus-like one from Anthony Miccio, no previous contact

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 13 June 2004 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, the double meanings are killing me!

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Sunday, 13 June 2004 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a nasty dose from Casuistry, don't tell anyone.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Sunday, 13 June 2004 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 13 June 2004 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Sunday, 13 June 2004 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I get 'em all the time. Sometimes, I've even gotten 'em on email addresses I've never used on ILX. Those ones, howev, I believe those are merely coincidences.

Huck, Monday, 14 June 2004 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

if you get one from me it's genuine

stevem (blueski), Monday, 14 June 2004 08:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a bunch of these: Philip Sherburne, Marianna Maclean, Ed, Sam back when she was DallasDeadGirl, and lots from alext.ilx . I don't think that they're all spamming me, more likely that someone who knows us all has one of those viruses that sends from a random address in your contact to a random address in your contacts.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 14 June 2004 08:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I doubt it. I got one, and don't think I'm in anyone's address book.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 14 June 2004 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha, I just got one from "Lucy Lurex" (Di, are you still using that screename/email?) so now I feel like part of the club or something!

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 14 June 2004 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I received a couple of attachments from "stevienixed".

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 14 June 2004 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I've had them, allegedly "from" various ilx-ers. some viruses apparently scan your internet browser cache for email addresses to send themselves to. IE, you don't have to have received an email from an ilx-er, most likely it's just someone who has visited the page, and who has examples of ilx pages in their cache who has the virus.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 14 June 2004 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Pashima, that's OTM

Jon in R'lyeh (ex machina), Monday, 14 June 2004 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't gotten any from ILXors, but I've gotten them from members of the knoxville messageboard on several occasions.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 14 June 2004 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I just got one from Martin Mushrush! How odd. I've used the same email on here for ages and only now have I started to get trickles of spam...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 14 June 2004 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I got some spam from Clifton Skidmore today.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't this the w32.sober worm? which sent random spam emails from addresses that it finds on your system? i was getting emails from made up addresses off websites guestbooks. but this was months ago, it just sorta dissapeared after a while.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

bah, always a bridesmaid.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 21 June 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

that sucks hstencil! this is the only place that address has been public, which means something, somewhere, is harvesting email addresses off ILX, in some manner. fuck that.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 21 June 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I got one saying it was from another user's spam-blocked email address today (the way I realized it was a spam right off the bat). I've recently changed my email address on the board because I realized that the majority of the virii I was receiving was from other people who use the board who are managing (against all better judgement) to launch a virus.

Users who want to use a spam-protected email address on the public board can set up their ACTUAL email address as the notification recipient by using the "settings" option at the bottom of the page. That way you can be protected from the virus and spam problem while still receiving the 1,058 message you'll get when you start you thread about indie fuX0rs.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 21 June 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

(That would be the "Private Email Address" setting just under the regular email address setting, on the Settings page.)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 21 June 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

yesh, i got one allegedly from ken c today.

j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Monday, 21 June 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep sounds like another cache-harvesting virus, ie whoever has this, has some ILX pages in their cache, the virus is looking for anything around an @ sympbol, and sending off a mail in the vague hope it'll land somewhere legit.

Is there a way of checking headers to see if the IP might show what machine they actually come from, or does that not work?

(worth noting: you cant get and send viruses from webmail accounts. Is programs like outlook/OE that do this shit).

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 21 June 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

just got an email from you ned, even though i don't think we have ever corresponded. It had an attachment that hotmail blocked.

donna (donna), Friday, 25 June 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

With webmail supporting HTML emails, and tons of patched IE holes, this is porbably not 100% true

I got one from hstencil just today.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 26 June 2004 04:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Not the real hstencil of course.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 26 June 2004 04:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I just had a message bounced back to my hotmail address as being 'undeliverable', even though it wasn't a message I had ever sent. Apparently I had sent it to someone called Sarah in Australia. I'm all confused and worried now - how do I stop this from happening again? I'd hate anyone to think it was me sending out rubbish emails. Well, I do send rubbish emails a lot of the time but, er, you know ....

C J (C J), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:09 (twenty-one years ago)

it was just a virus or some such thing cj, trying to trick you into opening the supposed email you sent, so it could start to breed happily in your computer.
you didn't open the attachment did you?
I have had those too, and I sometimes think " oh hell, did I email someone called Maisy?" or whatever the thing says..

donna (donna), Saturday, 26 June 2004 06:25 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I never click on attachments if I don't know who they're from. My anti-virus protection is up to date, so I hope I haven't picked up anything nasty! (I feel so dirty now)

C J (C J), Saturday, 26 June 2004 06:34 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
My email says it just tried to send a message to stevem, yet I have not sent a message to stevem recently. So if you got a weird email from me - it isn't me.
