LA ILXors: A place to live?

So I'm attending grad school at USC starting in August and I've never been to LA nor do I have any idea about where to live. Help me! What neighborhoods are cheap and good (and, importantly, low-moderate priced), where should I totally avoid, how much can I expect to pay, can I live within walking distance without spending absurd wads of cash, etc. etc.?

Christ, I'm a little overwhelmed by this right now...

x Jeremy (Atila the Honeybun), Sunday, 13 June 2004 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Since you'll be at USC, I recommend investigating the following areas:

Echo Park, Silverlake, Los Feliz, Atwater Village

You could try Hollywood but it's sort of shitty around there and too expensive for what it is. the areas above are places where you can find cheap and relatively nice studios, maybe even supercheap houses (I know a girl who lives in a house for 816 a month, a two bedroom house, and another who lives in a 2b house for 700...by themselves...in Echo Park). They're also within decent driving distance of USC, and very close to the best live music venues in L.A., great bars, and generally cool people.

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 13 June 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

the neighborhoods are unpredictable though....one block will be really nice and two blocks later you're in a shithole. also, the area around Hyperion Ave and around the Silverlake reservoir are nice, don't know about prices though. depends on what you can afford.

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 13 June 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

The area around USC is kind of dodgy, but it's probably not bad if you're reasonably careful. I walked a few blocks there alone one night (so I'm an expert, ha!) and it was OK. There are houses you can share with other USCers, also apts, of course. Find out about transportation to see whether an area is doable commute-wise. I hear Mt Washington can be cheap and is fairly nice, but it's on the other side of downtown from USC, so the travel might not be that good. You might even go to the Los Angeles www.craigslist.com and look into their rental section. Will you have a car?

nickn (nickn), Sunday, 13 June 2004 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Ugh... no car. I don't mind walking a decent distance - that is to say something like a mile - and I'm very willing to live with roommates. I've budgeted about $650/mo for housing which is pretty reasonable here outside of Boston, but might be a no-go in LA.

x Jeremy (Atila the Honeybun), Sunday, 13 June 2004 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

That's good for sharing, esp near USC. I'd look close to campus, and let your friends drive when going to clubs.

nickn (nickn), Sunday, 13 June 2004 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

One time I was dating this girl who was going to do some art installation thing for a party for the band Woven (already forgotten only months later it seems). They share this warehouse sized place downtown across the street from a strip club, in an industrial area. Anyway for of em live there and pay 1000 each. You should get 8 people together and move into one of those! the parties alone would pay for the rent.

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 13 June 2004 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish I could have a weekend apt in LA! :(

rocking the bicycle in LA shockingly cool.

pb, Monday, 14 June 2004 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Gear et al are OTM about where to look. However, I would strongly advise you to consider getting a car - any car. There's just no denying that L.A. was made for them.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 14 June 2004 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

What are there, like, no sidewalks?
I'm actually seriously interested in how L.A. is pedestrian-unfriendly, because the rathole city I live is in too, and I'm curious as to what they may have in common.

Huk-L, Monday, 14 June 2004 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The problem with public transport and pedestrianism is that the city is just too large geographically. Bus rides can be interminable. I love public transport in other cities but it's very difficult in L.A. Also, it's logical to have a private car because parking is (mostly) plentiful. A bus ride that takes an hour would take maybe 10 minutes with your own car (and that includes finding parking etc).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 14 June 2004 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Huk-L, Regina ain't near as big as L.A.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 14 June 2004 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm about 95% sure now that I'm *not* moving to LA but either way this thread was helpful

(Huck, sidewalks are very fucking rare in TX.)

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 14 June 2004 04:52 (twenty-two years ago)

stence, this is like some kind of IQ question!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 14 June 2004 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The week I moved back to TX from NYC I was staying with my mom in south Fort Worth. I decided to go to the 7-11 for a coke and she offered to drive me. I obviously refused b/c it was less than a mile away, duh, I'd walk.

Not very long into my walk I realized my mistake. Not only were there no sidewalks, but as I was walking on the side of the busy streets everybody was looking at me like either a. my car had broken down or b. I was poor. Either way, I was freak.

Then I knew I was back in Texas.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Monday, 14 June 2004 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

no Spencer, it was more to illustrate to Huk-L (who really needs to travel more) that his smallish city and its environs might barely fit into a small slice of L.A. suburbs, much less L.A. as a whole.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 14 June 2004 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

(I know that, just found the maps and questions amusing)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 14 June 2004 05:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I also conceive of Compton as the spiritual and geographical center of L.A.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 14 June 2004 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I know, but (originally) mostly because of the coldness of winter, it's absolutely a car town, and the newer subdivisions of the last 10/15 yrs mostly DON'T have sidewalks. Like Ray Bradbury. There are more than a few major interesection that don't have crosswalks. And until very recently, there were no nightclubs within less than 5 blocks of each other.
From what I understand, L.A. is all about the freeway, and we don't really mess with that shit here, because, yeah, we're not that big. We have one perimeter road that is nearly a freeway, except nobody's ever on it for more than 5 minutes at a time.
But, as a determined pedestrian, I find drivers have progressively less and less patience/courtesy for people who travel by foot. I mean the most visible expression of teenagerism in the summer here is the kids drive up and down the main drag. And I've never EVER heard the Beach Boys coming from their stereos. But there's this my car = my self mentality here that, when it's 40 below plus windchill, I can understand. But christ, it's freakin' beautiful at night in the summer. There's nowhere to go, so there's no hurry to get there, and if more people were out walking instead of all pacing up and down one single strip, maybe the parks wouldn't be largely the domain of perverts and puke-puppies. And I'm ranting about how this town really cannot hope to survive the next 20 years without at complete turnaround in civic policy, which just ain't gonna happen. I give the downtown core 12 years at most, and then even the winos will have fled. Anyway, L.A., buy a car. Sorry.

Huk-L, Monday, 14 June 2004 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

that was a big ass xpost.

Huk-L, Monday, 14 June 2004 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

it is nice in Regina in the summer, yeah.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 14 June 2004 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

you're missing the key point which is that it's easier to pick up a girl and obtain carnal knowledge of her in a car than in the hedges by the sidewalk.

oops (Oops), Monday, 14 June 2004 05:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Stence, I don't think that neccesarily LA's size has to do with its not being pedistrain or mass-transit friendly. Unless you mean size space-wise and not pop-wise.

In which case, NYC, Chicago etc prove you wrong as those are equally, if not bigger cities, yet do mass transit, non-car well. On the other hand places like TX's Metroplex serve yr point b/c although our population is smaller than all of those cities are sheer geographic spread makes non-car transportation nearly impossible.

I'm not quite sure what I'm getting at other than there are many differnt angles to compare getting around in places like LA vs. nearly anywhere else no matter what the population and you didn't neccesarily need to off-handedly insult Huck to make that point. (which I felt like you did.)

so yeah. whatever.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Monday, 14 June 2004 05:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Y'know, you have a point. Like even though I've never had a car, I've never, while in Regina, dated a girl who didn't. I have in other places, more traditionally urban cities (back when I used to travel, before I decided there was nothing out there in the world for me but misery and the clap), but in Regina, I tried it once, and just like gave up. I guess I used to be demanding of the ladies, back when I was actually in demand.

xpost

Huk-L, Monday, 14 June 2004 05:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Car, car, car, car, car. Very important for all the reasons people have mentioned. Without one, you'll lock yourself out of participation in most of what the city has to offer, esp. after 8 p.m. or so. Of course, if you live near usc, you can avoid having one for a while, it's possible that your studies will occupy you enough that you won't have a great deal of free time. Also, if you get some kind of group housing arrangement, roommates will probably have cars, be able to give you rides, let you borrow them, etc. YOu could give it a few weeks or months as a test. Ultimately, however, you have to have a car in L.A.

Skottie, Monday, 14 June 2004 05:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I was actually curious about relative city sizes and came up with this:

http://www.rotovibe.com/images/la_sf_mh.gif

that's Manhattan on the left and San Francisco on the right, both at the same scale as the L.A. map. The greater metro areas of both of those cities are of course much larger, but it's still a telling comparison of overall scale. Santa Monica to Downtown is roughly equivalent to the entire length of Manhattan (from Battery Park to the Cloisters). My friend takes a bus for that in L.A. but only because it saves money on parking. If he took his car, the time would be halved. Many people commute from the San Fernando Valley or even from Santa Clarita or San Gabriel which would be two or three Manhattan lengths.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 14 June 2004 05:44 (twenty-two years ago)

There are definitely neighborhoods in L.A. where a car isn't necessary, mainly the ones I listed up yonder. Those places all have pedestrian-friendly areas. If you want streets to work off of, for future reference or if you choose not to live by USC, check out the areas around 1) Vermont Ave between Franklin Ave and Hollywood Blvd, 2) Hillhurst between Los Feliz Blvd and Hollywood Blvd, 3) Rowena Ave between Hyperion Ave and Glendale Ave, 4) Silverlake Blvd by the reservoir, 5) Franklin Ave between Western and Gower, 6) Sunset Blvd from where it intersects Hollywood Blvd all the way down to Alvarado Ave.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 14 June 2004 06:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Roughly, I think you could fit all of Manhatten island into the Metroplex (Ft.Worth to Dallas and all the cities in between). When you stop to think that the entire population of TX (8 million people) is on Manhatten Island everyday. . .it's mindblowing.

This is also why I left NYC to return to TX. Space, yo.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Monday, 14 June 2004 06:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't Texas population well over 20 million? I thought it was the #2 state now, or if not, #3 and not far behind NY.

But yeah, LA is big and spread out but most areas you'll never have/want to go to. Lots of people get along without cars here. You can take a subway from downtown to Hollywood, and a bus to the beach.

nickn (nickn), Monday, 14 June 2004 06:19 (twenty-two years ago)

you are right. I R an idiot. Perhaps I meant the population of North Texas? I don't know. All I know is there's a lot more room to spread out down here and that's a good thing.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Monday, 14 June 2004 06:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Not surprisingly, with the exception of #6, these are all expensive at the moment and are getting even more expensive with each passing moment.

true dat

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 14 June 2004 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Not a lot of suggestions above are OTM with the exception of owning a car. Unless you live directly at USC, you'll require a car. Period. No exceptions.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 14 June 2004 06:37 (twenty-two years ago)

B-b-b-but Ned manages!

nickn (nickn), Monday, 14 June 2004 06:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Nevertheless, it IS possible to commute to USC via the subway & bus with a bit of judicious planning. Annoyingly, the subway doesn't run to USC, so you'll be stuck with the bus. Again, get a car.

I'd look at Highland Park, Echo Park, Eagle Rock, and *some* areas of Koreatown. Most of these areas have dodgy elements, but there's some really nice subneighborhoods that are still affordable.

My suggestion is to check with USC's campus housing office first and sub-let or just rent a room out from some other students first. The last thing you need when starting grad school is dealing with getting oriented to a new city AND finding a place on top of that. Just grab a room first, get the lay of the land, and then strike out for a better place.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 14 June 2004 06:49 (twenty-two years ago)

B-b-b-but Ned manages!

Ned also lives in a nice vaguely upscale apartment complex in Orange County that's near effective 24 hour bus service. This is eons away from the horrible area that surrounds USC.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 14 June 2004 06:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, nights he'll certainly be at the mercy of friends with cars, but for day stuff there's the DASH buses to downtown and then anywhere from there. Who knew the OC was so mass transit-friendly!

nickn (nickn), Monday, 14 June 2004 06:55 (twenty-two years ago)

mass transit out west sucks.

for me to use public transportion to get to my school, a 15 minute drive on the freeway turns into an hour and half bus to train to bus then walk trip.

when my car isn't working, I just call in.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Monday, 14 June 2004 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Somehow I knew I would be invoked. And as Elvis notes, I have myself a handy arrangement re: mass transit, which could be a hell of a lot worse. Meantime, if I wanted to go up to LA for something and didn't mind taking a bit of time (and usually I don't), there are bus/train/Metro connections I can use.

What I was getting at is that Regina isn't that big a city, size-wise, and there are probably other factors as to why public transportation ain't so hot. I don't think Huck took offense to that, although if he did, I would definitely apologize.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 14 June 2004 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

There are two questions here, similar sounding, but really different.

1. Is it possible to live near USC and not have a car? Well, of course it's possible.
2. Is ones quality of life going to be acceptable living in LA without a car? Absolutely not.

Hancock Park is basically the area bounded between Rossmore/Vine, Melrose, Larchmont, and Olympic Blvd. It's centrally located and pretty nice, lots of large houses. It's where the Getty House is (a.k.a. the mayor's residence)

I also conceive of Compton as the spiritual and geographical center of L.A.

Nope. That would be Hollywood - always has been and will be.

I'm probably the only LAILXDUDE who seriously/un-unironically likes Bang! and aim to hang out at the Ruby more (if not for Bang! then Clockwork Orange or Beat It!) as it's a 10 min walk from my humble abode. But I also don't mind dancing with asymmetrical-sweatered skanks who took three hours to get their make-up right and were born after 1988, and am told I don't look "too" old with getting guesses of 19-21. So maybe that's just me.

I would hang at Club Bang (actually went to Jr. High with the promoter), but I feel like a bit of a dad there... But I'm totally down with any over-21 hipster hangout.

Welcome Jeremy, you're going to love it here, there's a lot going on.

hstencil, the map you posted is of south-central LA. (it leaves out downtown LA for example.)

that was the idea re: Compton as "spiritual center" of LA. Goddamn nobody has a sense of humor around here anymore.

Okay now that I read the whole thread instead of just 4 random posts, and this comment in particular, ignore my next-to-last post. Besides, the "geographic" center would be somewhat debatable ]]]]

Jeremy congrats on making the decision to bring a car.

Yes, definately. This is, of course, pending the arrival of my cheap ass at LAX.
