Indie Hipster Sports Teams

Who's the ultimate indie hipster sports team?

For years teams like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Sacramento Kings were totally indie, but now they're all overplayed and sold out. Right now, the most indie rock team is:

my friend has an official fulham tracksuit/shorts set, but i don't really think it makes him hip. my celtic scarf, though... that's hip.

Funny thing about certain places in L.A. is that if I wear a Cubs hat I'm a total rube, but if I'm rocking an old-school Padres hat I'm totally hot.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 14 June 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Padres are kicking ass this year.

what?

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 14 June 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Padres are kicking ass this year. Soon enough they'll be too good to be indie.

And the White Sox, definitely. They're the blue collar alternative to the Cubs. I'm waiting for the inevitable Conor Oberst tune "The Ballad of Jose Valentin"

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 14 June 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahahahaha! I see more White Sox gear on "urban hiphopsters" than hipsters, tho.

Jaymc is probably otm, as long as we're not talking about discontinued-leagues and such (though what would I know). Though I, despite hating hockey, propose some alternatives...

For baseball, pretty much any 'old school' east coast AL team excluding the Steinbrenner Death Star.

The ultimate indie guilt nhl teams had to be the Whale and the Jets.

I believe ironic enjoyment of golf and bowling is also permitted.

Ailsa, I picked PT because Bis explained to me once (seroiously) that people chose them to avoid footy sectarianism, plus they're shambling and quite rubbish - like most indie hipsters. I'm partial to Celtic, which makes about as much sense as Alan McGee liking Rangers.

ARRGH. Crouch End Ex supports Crystal Palace and is the most indie male on the planet not in a band. I believe one of the factors in our split was, despite his impeccable lefty politics and vegetarianism, his refusal to acknowledge the talent of any woman in a band who was not Elizabeth Fraser. I pointed out that of all the people in the world he picked the one who sounded gorgeous but didn't actually SAY anything. Dork.

:D

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, sorry Keith, I forgot that the only Partick Thistle fans I know really are all indie-schmindie types. It's just that if you go and see them, the crowd is all about a hundred years old - people who know fuck all about football pay them lip service as "the non-sectarian Glasgow team". I'd rather watch Queens Park.

However, to increase Partick's schmindie cred I once knew a bloke who claimed to have heard "Missing the Moon" by the Field Mice over the PA system at half-time at a Partick v Dundee Utd match at Firhill in about 1992. If anyone could verify this, I would be most grateful as the veracity of this has bugged me periodically for over 12 years.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha! The Fieldmice at Firhill. Nice one.

I've been a Partick Thistle fan since before indie existed; although, on occassions and especially when playing for Scotland, Alan Rough's hands did appear to operate "independently" of his brain.

Respect to Queen's Park; they invented football. Their crowd are about 200 years old and there are only about 5 of them. My Grandfather was a fan.

Keith Watson (kmw), Monday, 14 June 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

teeny no Kentucky Colonels?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 14 June 2004 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I married a Clyde fan, so am well aware of the lowlier side of Glasgow football. I don't think Partick deserve their friendly cuddly reputation (though I may be being further swayed by the aforementioned Clyde fan on that).

Aren't Ayr United are the indie hipsters team of choice in Scotland? They have had a www.belleandsebastian.co.uk advertising hoarding for a few seasons now. But I once saw Stephen Pastel, Joe McAlinden and Gerry Love all together at a Celtic match, so maybe not hipsters, but surely the embodiment of Glasgow indie? Also Chris Geddes sits quite near me at Parkhead.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 14 June 2004 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

in the late 80s partick had a very indie following, the mad monks etc. i remember once 20 people starting a "theres only one stephen pastel" chant to the bemusement of the rest of the crowd (ie the other three men & dog). so field mice music is very possible.
oh and cherry red records used to sponsor kingstonians.

zappi (joni), Monday, 14 June 2004 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Doesn't Fatboy Slim sponsor Brighton & Hove Albion?

(Wet Wet Wet used to sponsor Clydebank, but this takes this into a whole other realm that we really don't want to enter - also Clydebank are no more, which may or may not be connected with the amount of self-respecting West of Scotland gentleman wishing to parade around in Wet Wet Wet tops)

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 14 June 2004 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil is OTM with the Expos.

I've wondered if the abhorrent Vancouver Grizzlies will ever achieve kitch immortality, but my conclusion is increasingly NO. People would rather forget the experiment altogether, it seems.

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Eisbar I thought you were totally going to go with the Detroit Tigers, because they've been terrible for so long, plus there's the Magnum P.I. kitsch factor AND the heavy coolness factor of ex-Tiger catcher Mickey Tettleton.
