Where do you grade your clothes along the formal/casual axis?

OK, this question requires some explanation probably. I was wondering why I - someone who generally doesn't care of fashion - have so many clothes. The answer I came up with was that I have to have a separate group of clothes for each different area of my life.

My clothes could be plotted with a graph according to a "formality" axis and a "conformity" axis. Formality, in this case, rather than meaning black ties or whatever, meant how "nice" the clothes were, both in condition (not ragged, fitting well, flattering). Conformity means more the "suitability" of the clothes, the blending-in aspect, whether they are intended to conform to a dress code, or stick out from a crowd.

Along these axes (axises?) I sorted my clothes into four "grades":

1) Suit. Top level, both high formality and high conformity. The clothes that I wear to job interviews, meetings with the boss and formal social occasions.

2) Smart Casual. High conformity but lower formality. These are every day work clothes, functional but not necessarily stylish.

3) Party/Clubbing/Stage Gear. High formality but low conformity. "Display" clothes for looking good and attracting attention.

4) Slobbing Out. Low formality and low conformity. The jeans and t-shirts and shapeless baggies whose primary function is comfort.

Firstly, do you agree with my criteria, or do you have your own? Or are you one of those people who only have one grade of clothing?

Secondly, what proportion of your wardrobe would you put into each category?

Suit - used to be less than 5%, but now creeping up to about 15%.

Smart Casual - used to be about 20% but closer to 50%

Party Gear - used to be about 50% but slipping down to about 5%

Slobbing Out - constant at about 30%

So it's strange to compare this to someone like Joe, who is about 90% Grade 4, and 10% Grade 2.

Firstly, it says that my lifestyle is changing quite dramatically. Second it says, wow, I've got a lot of clothes.

Apostrophe Catastrophe (kate), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 07:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i go along with your model actually. and rate thus:

suit: 5% (but also rising)
smart casual: 15%
party gear: 30%
slobbing out: 50%

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't do Grade 3. I am not a stage performer and I don't like drawing attention to myself and attracting attention, so, well, that's why really.

I think I'm probably 90% Grade 4, 5% Grade 1 and 5% Grade 2.

Men will have a higher proportion in Grade 4 in general. Coz we're slobs.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 08:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I have three grades, and it's a ven diagram. The circles are;

Good

Bad

Smart

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 08:13 (twenty-two years ago)

a little from column 2, a little from column 4, a handful of pieces from column 1. i don't really have separate "going out" clothes -- i like to mix my 2 and 4 up with flashier things and wear those to shows, parties, etc.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 08:36 (twenty-two years ago)

smart casual 90 %
suit 5 % owning one but hardly wearing it (is 5 too much then?)

no special going out clothes, what ARE special going out clothes

oh, now I miss 5 % so that must be slob clothes I guess

erik, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 08:55 (twenty-two years ago)

that said my smart casual clothes are mostly stylish to me

erik, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

5% party gear, 80% regular clothes that I wear to work, round the house or to the pub, 10% genuine slobbing out gear (dirty, holey, trackie bottoms/fleeces/big baggy t-shirts), 5% proper formal for weddings, funerals, visits to the RAC club.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with erik - smart casual can be functional and stylish! hooray! so under this definition (the removal of category C) I'm going with 10% dress, 85% hybrid functional/style, 5% slob.

but it depends highly on how much you have to conform at work.

clive (Clive), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think of my clothes in those terms. the stuff that is super casual to the point of slobbiness i usually only wear as PJs.

my clothes probably are more on a line chart than a graph with more than one axis.

a) average casual-- normal jeans, loads of long sleeved and short sleeved t-shirts, clunky trainers. what i wear to work most days.

b) smart casual-- nicer jeans, fitted/tailored tops, trousers that aren't jeans, smarter shoes.

c)'ooh, are you going somewhere special?'-- because i slob out so much, people ask this when i wear skirts, flirty tops (all the going out tops fit in this category), large earrings, cute shoes (i'm wearing ribbon-ankle wrapped espadrille wedges right now and people keep stopping me to ask where i got them. yay primark!),trouser suits, etc

d) fancy-- very rare at this stage. little black dresses, skirt suits, anything that could be worn to a black tie event, wedding, etc.

i'd be happy if i could get myself out of the habit of a and into b and c more. and i'd really be happy if i had more occasions to wear fancy clothes.

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, Colette, your categories do kinda fit into my categories. I can see your D being equivalent to my 1, your B being equivalent to my 2, your C being equivalent to my 3, and your A as my 4.

Apostrophe Catastrophe (kate), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

except there isn't really a conformity axis. i've worn the same type of clothes for the last 10 years, and sometimes it fits in, and sometimes it doesn't. and i'm always paranoid about looking like i don't fit in, so i usually just give up. you know?

so it's more just the formality axis for me, i think.

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, worrying and being paranoid that my clothes won't fit in generaly makes me tone them down, or at least, move towards more generic looking clothes, rather than trying to wear what everyone else wears.

Apostrophe Catastrophe (kate), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I wear whats clean off the floor that appears washed and ironed or whatever. I mean I wont wear PVC to work, but conversely Ive been known to go to a club in a tshirt and jeans or in work gear. Im rarely fussed with appearance beyond tidiness and my general "look", ie all my clothes fit my "personality".

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I must sound like such a slob! haha. I am I guess.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

eternally disheveled. I seek out linnen for my smart wear as it attains a formalised level of disorder very quickly.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

My ideal would be a suit with the wrinkles sewn in.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

1) Suit. Top level, both high formality and high conformity. The clothes that I wear to job interviews, meetings with the boss and formal social occasions.

I have 5 suits right now, including one dinner suit and also a couple of adaptable pieces like a sweet, sweet dinner jacket. I also have a growing collection of ties. I am hopeless with cufflinks, so I've switched to ciff knots. 30%

2) Smart Casual. High conformity but lower formality. These are every day work clothes, functional but not necessarily stylish.

A lot of these. Big collection of shirts, a few s-c trousers, and a regular appearance at work = 30% of wardrobe.

3) Party/Clubbing/Stage Gear/Slobbing Out.

Effectively the same thing for me, since I don't often wear too much of my smart casual threads to clubs (though a cool, smart shirt always goes a ways on occasion). Actaully, I like to think of myself as an occasionally smart party slob. 40%. If I have a smarten up party percentage, it's possibly 10% of this, mostly by stealing from the smart casual section. And on reflection, I've never worn shorts and slippers out, but otherwise, the line's blurred.

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i wear nothing but jeans & t-shirts. in the winter this may be augmented by a hoodie, sweater or flannel shirt. tube socks & one pair of sneakers.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

half my clothes are indiepop band shirts, and the other half are like label-whore'y things.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Suit - 50%

Smart Casual - 30%

Party Gear - .999%

Slobbing Out - 20%

I'm almost always overdressed except when I'm naked or so grubby as to barely be permitted to leave the house. I haven't had or tried to have 'party gear' for so long, to try now would be ridiculous. Given my druthers I'd probably wonder around in a morning suit until it was time to change into white tie and tails.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm pretty casual. Yup.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Split Infinitive!!! Look what depths you people have dragged me. ;)

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm about 50% suit and 50% slob at the moment, excepting work uniform. I think it affects my self esteem.

Fergal (Ferg), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I walked down telegraph at lunch in a button-up shirt and shiny black shoes. I felt like a narc!!!

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

And then I went and bought a cigar!

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Narc!!

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Dress clothes or suits - 0%.

Almost all jeans (mostly boot-cut), t-shirts, a couple of polo shirts, a few casual button-up shirts, a pair of black Docs and a pair of black Chuck Taylors. I need to get some new shoes, it's too hot to wear my boots and the Chucks are useless for walking longer distances.

That's not counting my work clothes, which are all covered in paint.
