Is Oceanside, CA worth traveling half the country in a Greyhound Bus for? I Must Know Soon

Or anywhere near that area of M3cc4 (aka. SoCal) with very few days to spare and no desire other than taking a plunge in the Pacific Ocean and reaching the last frontier...

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

You can do better than Oceanside. Why not just crash out up here?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

--that paradisiac elusive last frontier, I should have said...

So far on my list of possible things to do...
-Savor CaliMex morsels
-Stalk Mike Landucci from Blackbean and Placenta
-Visit the California Museum of Surf
-Catch a Joan Jett show
-Bathe in the Pacific

EDIT: I LOVE YOU NED! I knew you'd come through!!!
I just...didn't want to seem a bother...

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, well, don't ruin the place or YOU'RE MEAT.

More seriously, someone up in LA might be your better connection there, not least because Mike lives up on the other side of LA. Also, I'll be away on various vacations soon. Just drop me a mail and I'll let you know what I think.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

It's still very much a plan in the making, however...just a silly childish impulse o' mine...goin' to Cali, that is.

See, I'm going going back back to Te-xas to solve some unfinished business for 2 weeks...but it won't take me long, I don't think...so I figured, it's summer...why not dive headfirst into chance? Thing is, Greyhound would be my only option, and it is hella expensive for me alone to pay. The ideal situation would be for a friend to accompany me so we can halve the cost of travel. But...all my friends in TX seem to be taking summer school.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I wanna see pretty scenery, and keep the illusion of the West Coast alive in my mind, at least...LA would rock as a destination, but I'm deathly afraid of getting eaten up by the city. I really don't know how to go about this, 'cuz I don't know what to do myself. Main detail is my plane in Houston leaves the 3rd of July. So I should be there by then, but I can't leave TX until I solve my bih-ness, and that should take a few days, starting the 19th, the day after I arrive.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

What you say, peeps? Any possible suggestions?

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

WAKE UP, CALIFORNIA!

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Oceanside seems rather, hummmm, interesting, as a vacation destination. Interesting in the sense of not very interesting. If you think L.A. is too much to deal with for a short visit, consider San Diego. You can go to Oceanside for the day. S.D. is small, clean, pretty, close to Mexico, nice beaches, etc. Although, you really should do L.A. instead.

or., drive up the Pacific Coast Highway from L.A. to San Francisco. Stop in Big Sur for a day or two. Then you'll have scenery. Oh, my, yes, you'll have scenery. Villefranche-sur-Mer, eat your heart out.

Skottie, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Awesome. Thx Scottie. Oceanside just sounds, from what I've heard, like the kind of quiet beach town I would like to retire to in my OLD age, all of 21 years. I'm hoping to visit a nice, clean, scenic beach that isn't completely inundated by wankers tanning and clogging up my view.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The reason why I am leery of Oceanside can be summed up easily -- it is the town immediately outside the gates of Camp Pendleton. IE, Marine city -- so I would NOT call it some 'quiet beach town'!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Oceanside is not far from North County San Diego including my former city of residence Encinitas which is one of my favorite places on the planet. I would try Encinitas more: Great beaches (Swami's, Leucadia, Cardiff Reef, Beacons), great food, great shopping (including Lou's, one of my favorite record stores in California), it's right off the train tracks too.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha. Oh wow, well that solves that bit. I'll prolly head out elsewhere instead. Any real COOL, calm, yet exciting beach towns worth a shot or should I just go straight to LA and take it from there, then maybe take a shuttle bus to the beach, perhaps?

Gygax (xpost): I definitely had Encinitas in mind! I'll have to check that out.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Gygax speaks wisely there. Lou's is indeed pretty goddamn great.

If you're going to be lingering in San Diego more -- and there are indeed many reasons to go -- the crew down that direction will be of more help when it comes to accomodation, including Matt Maxwell and the estimable Vahid. Commuting from my section of OC would be time-consuming and sorta pointless.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Alright. All this seems like wise advice from you loving lot. Thanks again, guys. I'm still trying to figure out the whole thing, seeing as my funds are tight. But do keep it coming! A visit to LA seems vaguely tempting as of now...but who knows what may go down!

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Rah! (Also I should say I'm not volunteering Matt's and Vahid's abodes, before they worry! Just that they might know of places to get a cheap room, etc.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Have a great trip!

I think L.A. is pretty great, but I completely understand wanting to avoid it. It's huge, sprawling, and tends to hide its charms pretty effectively. But if you do spend some time here (L.A.), you don't have to give up on quiet beach towns. Hermosa Beach, not too far south of the airport, is a nice place to hang out, try your hand at surfing, etc.

You may have had experience with the Pacific, but I was shocked the first time I stuck my toe in the water --having had more time with the Atlantic, the Gulf of Mexico, even the Mediterrean-- at how COLD it was/is. Even in the summer. You'll notice most surfers wear wet suits.

Buon viaggio!

Skottie, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, do not forget that the ocean circulation is coming from the Arctic...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, (a horse is a horse) of course! Silly Ned! :D

Skottie: Never been to the Pacific!!! Never seen it! That's kinda the whole point. I'm a beach bum at heart, and as such, it is the spiritual gist of the trip.

Fr4ncis W4tlingt0n (Francis Watlington), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a beach bum!

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

And...and...and...there's Malibu!

Skottie, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I was in Malibu! I saw Cindy Crawford!

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Did she see you?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Francis personally I think LA is more interesting. You could drive up the 1, the 2, there are lots of things to do! I offer Long Beach as a crash pad if you don't mind a futon. I don't mind taking you around to do the tourist thing, since DEE won't come to visit at least I can show *someone* from Texas the sights. Let me know.

Damn, I'm worn out. Who would've thought?... a vigorous, energetic youth such as myself...It's been a day and I still feel like lying down. Have I mentioned I really hate Mac laptop keyboards? Kinda off-topic, I know...but i am posting from one and it. is. a. pain to summon anything up with this shrunken-sized piece of shit...spent yesterday's 6 hr flight(s) checking out a gorgeous flight attendant (think red haired, young Jennifer Connolly) and thinking she had the hots for me until she got a lil' bit closer and let me know I needed to put on the seatbelt for the plane to actually take off...I also spent most of my time smooching up to a Reaganite lawyer who could pass for a slimmer actual-era Debbie Harry who swore I was the living resurrection of her dead nephew or something equally far-fetched and that she would like for me to go to Corpus sometime and teach her some 'Spanish'. My friends have got a big ass apt (very relative and limited exclusively to my own exp...compared to my house...this place is a mansion and hella cheap too for 3 college studs) that doubles as a kick ass dump littered with original NES cartridges and cheap beer cans...not to mention a lovely German Shepherd pup called Willie who keeps on confusing my arms and jeans for legs of lamb...animals have got to stop biting me when i'm practically unconscious...there's no one here now but me...i'm getting by on Taco Bell and microwaveable pizza...it's Sat...middle of the summer, and there's no one to visit but old teachers who are probably out on vacation...everybody i know has either left school or left town or dropped out...OR too busy being assholes from what i hear...i'm falling asleep already...it's barely 4pm and i slept over 10 hrs last night...last nite, i had taco cabana...IT'S HOT OUTSIDE, we are not that close to campus (it's a 20 min walk under the sun), i'm estranged, i last took a shower about 2300 miles away, there's no phone in this house...gotta wait til the week to care of business...my fwends are either at baseball practice or drove up to mineral wells, tx (north of dallas) to look for some furniture and i just watched Cruel Intentions and hey, what can I say?....GET ME OUT OF HERE!!!

Franco Weako (rhymes with Puert0 Ric0?), Saturday, 19 June 2004 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

We're gonna go see chronicles of riddick-ulous on sun, for whatever that's worth...man, feels weird coming back after over a yr and things being so different yet YES YES exactly the same....my friends still do nothing but drink beer and watch baseball, praise the depth exhibited in the Counting Crows body of work and scold me for being a damn liberal (or in their words, a hungry hippie)...dunno whether to feel glad or depressed

ps-ah, finally...Willie the dog fell asleep after pulling on my pantlegs all day long...gonna take a shower and read some later on...i hear we're having White Russians and whatever I want to eat tonite, which usually results in me compromising to eat Thai or Tex-Mex cuz they won't dare try anything else

it be Meeeee again, Saturday, 19 June 2004 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

You are a brave and bold man. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 June 2004 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

(Because in that situation I might, if not cry, find the earplugs so the 'hungry hippie' talk sorta gets blocked out.)

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

trust me, you don't want to be there

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

The Leucadia neighborhood in Encinitas is really really nice. That's about it for North San Diego Co., though. :/

GB, is there a reason you don't want to live in San Diego proper? Or has it really become that expensive? I though maybe the quieter neighborhoods like the DMZ between Hillcrest and downtown might be really nice, or Kenzington or something like that. Then again, maybe all those places have skyrocketed in price.

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

To answer the original question, HELL NO

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

Other SJC advantages -- regular Amtrak/Metrolink stop in the center of town, great small station.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

Oceanside is where you go to get that certain je ne sais quoi that Twentynine Palms just can't give a person.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 20:53 (eighteen years ago)

quieter neighborhoods like the DMZ between Hillcrest and downtown

...that's directly underneath the flightpath for Lindbergh field?

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 20:53 (eighteen years ago)

SJC seems like way to far to commute to San Diego.

is this around bankers hill? i stayed there on my last trip... it was a little too quiet. hillcrest is pretty cool.

get bent, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

SJC seems like way to far to commute to San Diego

I know people with longer commutes, and again, Amtrak/Metrolink makes it all go way faster. Rush hours, who needs 'em!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 20:57 (eighteen years ago)

encinitas/cardiff/solana area

i can't imagine living there but it's nice to visit. lou's records was cool and i always make sure i go to besta wan's when i'm out there. leucadia is nice but it seems like everything out that way is so suburban. i suppose that's because they're all suburbs of san diego.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

please don't even visit solana beach or encinitas

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

I loved living in encinitas/cardiff/solana but this was a very long time ago (in my late teens). I haven't returned in about a decade, but I understand that traffic is an even worse now then it was back then (very bad - horrible).

ok the big reveal is that we got an apartment about two blocks from la paloma and will be moving there in june ... suffice to say i am not stoked about the changes in traffic over the last 10 years ...

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 21:22 (eighteen years ago)

i grew up in solana beach and i'm sorry to say there's not a whole lot of the old town left. if i had to pick i would probably pick san juan capistrano myself.

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 21:25 (eighteen years ago)

the bike lanes may still be pretty good...?

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

If I had to rank northern San Diego County I'd go: Encinitas, Leucadia, Solana. Oceanside would not be an option and Carlsbad appears to have some of the worst property rights NIMBYism outside of South Pasadena.

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

Anyway, the correct answer is:

* whatever doesn't suck in South OC
* whatever is closest to an Amtrak station

SJC is a stop on Amtrak?

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 22:00 (eighteen years ago)

honestly i am loving the idea of sjc -- the commute either way (up to l.a. or down to s.d.) isn't that bad.

sjc is on amtrak! it's a great station.

Sorry. (Mackro, Remy dropped me a line and sez he was going to give you a call.)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, fuck it. San Juan Capistrano.

If Leucadia or Encinitas had an Amtrak stop nearby Hwy 101, I would give that the top spot, but there isn't one. SJC wins.

- One of the most haunted streets in California
- El Adobe - one of the oldest of the old school fancy Mexican restaurants
- Mountain Lion attacks!

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 22:11 (eighteen years ago)
