RFI: Tropical vacations

a.k.a my honeymoon angst thread. haha yes I know, pity me.

places I have been: maui, hawaii, nassau, puerto vallarta, cancun.

I'd be up for a return visit to any of those places, but am very interested in puerto rico and jamaica.

This is probably happening in august (will it be beastly hot?), we don't have a ton of cash but we won't be totally slumming it either. Taking walks is about as athletic as we get; it's all about the beach and a bit of local culture. My Spanish is okay, no French though.

I'm really leaning toward Jamaica.

Cancun and Nassau are all right, but it's been years since I've been to either. I'd be up for Jamaica and P.R., though with the latter you're not leaving the country (oh shit, keep forgetting to renew my passport, dammit!). Had a good conversation with an ILBer last night who recently went to CUBA, which would be my first choice. Or Trinidad.

Mmm...I should talk since I'm about to go on a vacation myself to Venezuela at the southern shore of the Caribbean and all, but I sorta recommend reading A Small Place by Jamaica Kincaid -- it's an eloquent personalized take on the culture of image and presentation vis-a-vis the Caribbean tourist industry, and to be honest after I read it I ceased wanting to go to the Caribbean on a trip ever again unless I was going to meet up with friends as opposed to going for 'the experience.'

THAT SAID ;-) -- my parents went to Bermuda as well many years back and enjoyed it very much indeed.

Hopetown, on Elbow Key, off of Great Abaco, Bahamas. Not cheesey, paradise, small quiet, beautiful.

i just went to Playa Del Carmen & Talum (40miles outside of Cancun) two weeks ago and had a fucking blast. we stayed in tents on the beach, never wore shoes, never saw fucking fratboy drunkeness. was super peaceful and great. swam in Cenotes (underground rivers and caves), saw the ruins at Talum, snorkeled in reefs.

i'm so bummed i'm back at work :(

you mean Tulum - where they got that Mayan stuff? It's cool.

I have family and friends who go to Puerto Rico every year because they love it that much.
