Mead in Pubs!

I think it's a scandal you can't get mead in pubs, AFAIK.

Does anyone know of a pub which serves mead?

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I've loved mead for ages, but have to buy it from Gluttons in Walton Street, Jericho, Oxford, as i don't know anywhere else that sells it. Well, not strictly true, you can buy it from the monks on Lindisfarne or at Robbs department store in Hexham, but it's a bit far to go!

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Alcoholic honey... is this good or bad?

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

markh has the need for mead!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

well that's just it you see, by rights I shouldn't like this ultra-sweet drink, as I am a bitter drinker out of habit, and generally turn my nose up at brightly coloured alcopops and so forth. But, c'mon, mead rocks! And what's more, as it proudly says on the bottle, it is England's Oldest Drink!

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

a friend with mead is a friend indeed!

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

You fucking can get mead in -pubs! The Sunrunner in Hitchin does excellent mead - plus loads of other excellent types of fruity winey stuff. You can also buy it in bottles from Morrisons.

The best drink in the world is The Bumpkin - a glass of mead poured into a half of real cider. Fucking bootiful!

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Hopleaf in Chicago serves a few types of mead - I've never tried them, though.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I so have to try Dog latin's mead + cider suggestion!

A trip to Hitchin is U&K!

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow! I love mead so hard - that I can get it in Oxford is gonna be a life-altering, grade-annihilating revelation.

(Thanks for tip, DL!)

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

let it mead!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

get ye to Jericho, Greg.

shouldn't you be revising? ;)

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a bottle of mead in the kitchen, left by a previous tenant, and it has become this endless running joke

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

MarkH, on the weekend 10th July Hitchin is host to the Rhythms of the World festival. The town literally turns into a great big stage for the whole weekend and it is the perfect time to go check out some tunes and some mead. Incidentally I am playing a set at 1:30pm on the Saturday in the George pub.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I'm doing anything that weekend...may well come along, cheers.

Hitchin FAP maybe?

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't have exams this year! A winner is me.

(I am drinking mead as I type this - I was saving it for a special occasion (It's the last of my Cornish supplies) but now I can BUY MORE TOMORROW RAH). Thanks again!

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaargh extra post required by unclosed bracket. Magic aphrodisiac properties of mead are k-true, I think. Verification?)

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

a hitchin FAP would be awesome! You're on. Insert an underscore between 'dog' and 'latin' in my email address if anyone is interested in going.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

you know Gluttons? It's a long way up Walton Street y'know....even further than Somerville!

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

(I think)

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Eeek, I've never been there! Is it bikable?

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

bet you thought you fell off the edge if you went past Worcester, didn't you?

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

That's not so bad! I play Go in Freud's like twice a week, it's barely further. Thanks again - mm, glorious mead.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 17 June 2004 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I suspect the Bumpkin may be the road to ruin, but it is a road I am prepared to travel.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 17 June 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Mead is the enemy of ruin. Florence and I proclaimed this when we really drunk, and I believe it still.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 17 June 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

who is Florence?

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 17 June 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

My best friend in college. I have no idea why I posted that, I think I was drunk. I should get off this thread, really. I'd like to come to Hitchin, though.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 17 June 2004 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

is mead like barley wine?

aimurchie, Friday, 18 June 2004 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmead.

You used to be able to get Honey Wine in my favourite Ethiopian restaurant, but unfortunately, it closed a long time ago.

Apostrophe Catastrophe (kate), Friday, 18 June 2004 07:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Jaysus the Edge! Worst thread ever! Mead is utterly foul!

Sarah (starry), Friday, 18 June 2004 07:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I've loved mead for ages, but have to buy it from Gluttons in Walton Street, Jericho, Oxford, as i don't know anywhere else that sells it.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 18 June 2004 07:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Mead is GRIM and drunk by GOTHS.

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 18 June 2004 07:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Excuse me, but VIKINGS != goths.

(Secretly, I just want to be a Viking.)

Apostrophe Catastrophe (kate), Friday, 18 June 2004 07:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Starry, Ricky OTM.

This so-called 'bumkin' sounds like a most unsatisfactory version of Ye Zyder Armadillo.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 18 June 2004 07:54 (twenty-two years ago)

they used to sell mead in the mill in cambridge, i believe.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 18 June 2004 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Mead is GRIM and drunk by GOTHS

Hee, hee! That's funny coz I'm prolly the least Goth person ever!

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 18 June 2004 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be the judge of that.

GFG (Tim), Friday, 18 June 2004 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Jaysus the Edge!

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 18 June 2004 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

five years pass...

Mead at dinner for dessert, if not in a pub. And it was good, the four of us judged.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 26 July 2009 05:06 (sixteen years ago)

After which you all did the waggle-butted Bee Dance.

Aimless, Sunday, 26 July 2009 05:09 (sixteen years ago)

Perhaps.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 26 July 2009 05:18 (sixteen years ago)

One has so many things to remember these days, one cannot keep track.

Aimless, Sunday, 26 July 2009 05:30 (sixteen years ago)

Evening Star in Brighton does mead! Always drunk by the stangest blokes at the bar. (^_^)

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 27 July 2009 15:15 (sixteen years ago)
