Anyone here own a MINI Cooper?

My 11-year-old Honda is finally becoming too unreliable for me to use, and now that I am back driving to work, I have started to shop for a new car. Hondas just seem so incredibly dull to me now, so I test drove a Cooper (not the S) and really liked it, so I am getting close to placing my order on the Miniusa website. But, thought I'd ask -- is anyone here a Mini owner, and if so, your thoughts on the car's performance and cost/benefit ratio?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 18 June 2004 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

No, but I so covet one.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 18 June 2004 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I've riden in one, in the backseat even (much roomier than it looks). Not bad, don't know what their gas mileage is tho.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 June 2004 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Are they exclusively stick or are there automatic ones as well?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 18 June 2004 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm waiting for someone to buy me one.
I've driven them. They rock, their mileage rocks, but they aren't comfy for long car trips.

Orbit (Orbit), Friday, 18 June 2004 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I rode in the backseat from NYC to Baltimore and back, and it was fine.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 June 2004 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

25 city/32 hwy according to here

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Friday, 18 June 2004 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

It's actually harder to find a stick (the kind I want); most are automatic, at least around here. xpost

well out West that's not a long car trip. we have different standards....say LA to SF

Orbit (Orbit), Friday, 18 June 2004 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The mileage on the Cooper isn't all that great for such a small car -- 25/32 with automatic (which I need). I looked into the Honda hybrid and even the VW GTI, which uses diesel fuel, but decided I'd rather drive a car I just enjoy rather than worrying about the gas mileage issue too much.

xpost - right now the Cooper is available in automatic, and beginning in January they're going to offer the Cooper S in auto as well.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 18 June 2004 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

You're hardly a man if you don't know your stick!

; )

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Friday, 18 June 2004 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

NYC to Balmer in Friday rush hour traffic on the NJ Turnpike took about as long as SF to LA. Bad idea, I know.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 June 2004 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I could drive stick in a pinch, but I find constantly having to have my hand on the gear and upshifting and downshifting in the horrible Chicago traffic to be a huge PITA.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 18 June 2004 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually BBT there was this thread a while back, too:

I am completely obsessed with the MINI Cooper

I didn't read through it though, so I have no idea if any owners weighed in...

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 18 June 2004 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

That was just a picture thread if memory serves.

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Friday, 18 June 2004 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

That thread consisted of people posting pictures of anything but the MINI, it seems...

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 18 June 2004 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

oh god yeah, you're right. Like I say, I didn't even read through it. I just remembered it in 'New Answers'. My bad.

FWIW, there are like three of them in my neighborhood. I'll try to flag down one of the owners sometime and ask 'em about them for you.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 18 June 2004 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I read through the owner comments on autobytel.com, and one of the most frequent comments was "Better be prepared to talk about all of the car's features, because you'll always be asked when you park it near people."

I think I'm going to pull the trigger tomorrow night and put my order in. My car now is just too unreliable; it's died 3 times in the last 2 months...

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 18 June 2004 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I still am obsessed with the MINI, and I still want one. Buy it! Buy it!

Debito (Debito), Friday, 18 June 2004 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this like the Beetlemania of four-five years ago?

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Friday, 18 June 2004 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the Honda hybrid Civic is cooler.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 June 2004 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, what happened to VW, leeeee? They fell off hard.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 June 2004 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

But the Mini Cooper is a great car, by all accounts. The Beetle is an average car with nice styling (and even that point is debatable).

Debito (Debito), Friday, 18 June 2004 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

who's saying the Beetle's not an average car? I'm just saying their sales must suck donkey balls these days.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 June 2004 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I was refering to this:

"Is this like the Beetlemania of four-five years ago?"

Debito (Debito), Friday, 18 June 2004 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think Leeeee was commenting on the benefits or detriments of Beetle-owning, either. More a query as to trendiness.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 June 2004 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, trendiness, but please to back off on Beetle bashing, yes?

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Friday, 18 June 2004 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

is saying I haven't seen a new Beetle on the streets in ages "bashing," per se?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 June 2004 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Well ok then. I take all things MINI very personally (which is bizarre, cus it's a car).

I can't buy one now. I worry that when I can buy one someday, it will have become some tired, played-out automotive fad. But actually, I don't care, I'll still buy it.

Debito (Debito), Friday, 18 June 2004 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the Beetle is a good looking car, especially when it's tricked out a bit. But basically it's not a very exceptional car.

But the MINI is exceptional in it's handling, price, dimensions, etc.

Debito (Debito), Friday, 18 June 2004 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I was referring to Debito, but I'll agree that unless it looks like this, then it can get blasé real fast. This coming from an owner.

The cabriolets look cute though. But back to the Mini. It's a bimmer so one must assume it's well packed.

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Friday, 18 June 2004 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Exactly. It's a bimmer go-cart.

Debito (Debito), Friday, 18 June 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

are they reliable? this is the only thing I care about. I'm thinking of trading in the car we bought for too much money last year next year, and taking a loss on what we still owe on it, and getting a mini, just because it looks more fun to drive. the mileage does suck though, I'm surprised.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 18 June 2004 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

If you don't mind paying the slightly inflated price due to it being such a popular, trendy car, then go for it. It's a BMW so reliability should not be a problem.

oops (Oops), Friday, 18 June 2004 06:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the Honda hybrid Civic is cooler.

Yeah, but in terms of safety I'd stick clear of hybrids for now. Most are made of a lighter-weight aluminum that crumples easily, even in low-speed collisions. Hopefully this can be fixed soon as hybrids become more popular.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 18 June 2004 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Me and Sarah have been coveting Minis. We drove in the back of one recently (bear in mind we're both 6 feet tall) and I wouldn't want to do it too often. Not that I would, as I'd be driving.

Has no-one mentioned that the manual ("stick", hee) is 6-speed? That's cool enough in itself.

I also heard that they're going to start making lower-spec ones, though to be honest that'd take away most of the fun. I'm thinking of waiting another couple of years, then getting one second hand. Apart from anything else, Sarah said she'd be tempted to learn to drive UK-style if we got a mini...

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 18 June 2004 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a BMW so reliability should not be a problem.

My wife is under the impression that BMWs are extremely unreliable, but I don't know where she got that impression, since we've certainly never had one.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 18 June 2004 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I wanted a MINI until I saw one up close. Too small.

Now I'm daydreaming about the 2005 Mustang.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 18 June 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I WANT I WANT

tk, Friday, 18 June 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Most folks who think BMW's are reliable have never owned one.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 18 June 2004 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

has anyone paid attention to their ad campaigns? i just noticed one in The New Yorker . . . I'm impressed with how creative, smart & funny it is. Within the magazine is what looks like a flattened cardboard milk carton. the panel that usually hosts the nutritional content has pictures of how to assemble the carton & fake like you're all out of milk--just so you can drive around in your mini cooper. sure, it's a total waste of paper, but the person behind it must be very clever.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 18 June 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Now I'm daydreaming about the 2005 Mustang.

Those are fugly. Even worse than the current all angular model.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 18 June 2004 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Bite your tongue! The '05 Pony picks up right where the '67 left off (although, not as truly as the prototype did).

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 18 June 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Bleh. It's too chunky and the lines aren't clean enough to replicate the first-gen cars.

Worst drop-off between body styles/generations - the BMW Z3. Went from being a beautiful little old-school Euro roadster to some new-age edgy crap.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 18 June 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The biggest disappointment for me in the past few years was Nissan's reintroduced Z. Early protos had the long front and chopped back just like the ones from the '70s (I guess I'm partial, because my first car was a 280ZX). Then the consumer version was unveiled and it ended up looking like a drop of molten metal that hadn't cooled fully before someone started driving it.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 18 June 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't seen many pics of the new 'stang and haven't seen it in person, but I think it's definitely an improvement over the present model.

oops (Oops), Friday, 18 June 2004 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
I want one now more than ever.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 5 September 2005 02:50 (twenty years ago)

It was on my shortlist when I realized I needed a car, but 1) the closest dealership was in sterling, about an hr away 2) i heard it would be $$ to repair due to its bmw lineage and 3) it wasn't that cheap. Still like the look of it, but see lots of goons driving it around these parts. Also, the controls inside looked a bit confusing. I am happy with my servicable honda civic.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 5 September 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

I've had mine for a little more than a year. I love it. It's so fun and zoomy.

mikef (mfleming), Monday, 5 September 2005 03:37 (twenty years ago)

i lust after every one I walk past and curse my boring accord. but I don't know if I could dealwith a car that small now.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 5 September 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

Haven driven two in the last three weeks I was surprised how big they are. Compared to my little micra, anyway!

I took an instant dislike to them when they were launched, but after driving my mum's for a week and my friend's convertible, I've decided that it's not the car I hate but the fact that they've called it a mini.

There's not much to dislike at all, all the mod cons of a modern car. There was a tiny blindspot in my mum's, which turned out to be rather a big blind spot in the convertible, but I guess that goes with the territory. It's quite a hard ride, but the two I drove went like the clappers, which suited me well ;0) In the uk, at least, they've held their value incredibly well, and at least you'll get the BMW quality, along with the prices.

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 5 September 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

twelve years pass...

i kind of want one? i'm in the market for a car right now. there are some certified pre-owned ones that are just a little bit out of my budget

marcos, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 21:51 (eight years ago)

i want a fun car. i had an entry-level toyota hatchback for 11 years and i loved that thing, but i'm older now and i have a shitty commute so i want something fun. i could get another toyota hatchback or a honda fit or something but if im gonna spend that kind of money on a new or newish car i may as well spend the same amount for something nicer that's used

marcos, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 21:54 (eight years ago)

Fun car of the moment imo is the Fiat 500

direct to consumer online mattress brand (silby), Tuesday, 30 January 2018 21:55 (eight years ago)

those are fun! i need a 4-door car though

marcos, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 21:56 (eight years ago)

> I've had mine for a little more than a year. I love it. It's so fun and zoomy.

Now I've had mine for 14 years and it's time to get a new car. Like maybe a toyota hatchback :(

I've had very good luck with mine, maintenance-wise, over the years but others haven't... My model year has a legendary defect with the automatic transmission that I (fortunately) have not encountered.

fajita seas, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 22:26 (eight years ago)

fiat panda is the best, like a more useful 500, but not avaibs in the US afaik

i test drove a green countryman this morning, it was so dope. little too pricey for me tho, idk if they will come down much

Sorry--thought this had something to do with Twin Peaks.

clemenza, Thursday, 1 February 2018 16:29 (eight years ago)

seven years pass...

7-12 year old Countryman models are kind of in my budget now, but the only person I know well with Mini experience had mechanical problems with hers more often than seems tolerable.

Was hers an exception, or are they money pits?

ⓓⓡ (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 25 September 2025 15:52 (eight months ago)

We had two Mini Coopers and neither one made it to $75k miles before I gave up and sold them.

Super fun car to drive, but reliability is extremely suspect.

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Thursday, 25 September 2025 16:53 (eight months ago)

We briefly entertained the notion of buying a used one but all the research I did said no, don’t do that unless you have money to burn.

Cow_Art, Thursday, 25 September 2025 17:04 (eight months ago)

My mom has had hers for 20+ years and is very happy! But my dad does all the work on it.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Thursday, 25 September 2025 18:10 (eight months ago)

It's even a year-round car for the Michigan winters with a good set of snow tires on it.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Thursday, 25 September 2025 18:10 (eight months ago)

my buddy had a Fiat 500 and he came outside to go somewhere and one of the wheels had fallen off

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 25 September 2025 18:17 (eight months ago)

My wife has one (2018?). Seems like an OK car, haven't had a problem with it yet (we got it used). Easy to park. I think there is a span of models that are notoriously unreliable, but then after a certain year things get more reliable?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 25 September 2025 18:17 (eight months ago)

Actually, this past winter we had a coolant leak, that's the only bigger thing we've had to fix.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 25 September 2025 18:18 (eight months ago)

Easy to park.

lmao my mom can't parallel park but the joke is that the car is so small you can just pull in nose-first and never have to technically know how to parallel park at all.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Thursday, 25 September 2025 18:21 (eight months ago)

The latest generation of Minis are rated pretty well for reliability but when something breaks you’re paying BMW prices for repairs.

Lady Sovereign (Citizen) (milo z), Thursday, 25 September 2025 18:41 (eight months ago)

Johnny, my wife recently bought a 2019 Countryman. It is a perfectly adequate machine for the tootling about that we do.

One thing to note is that it is not especially small. It is a four-door SUV type thingy, not a tiny European dreamscooter.

We do a lot of parking in underground garages in the city (the ones all bestrewn with enormous columns at bizarre angles). The Countryman is no better or worse at those than a sedan like an Accord or Camry or whatever.

Perhaps in future I can get something smaller and nimbler. Fortunately most of my getting about is walking/biking at present.

EAT THE RICHly flavored desserts (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, 25 September 2025 18:52 (eight months ago)

here you go https://www.crookedrivergarage.com/single-post/2018/01/21/decoding-the-mini-market-1

seems like later year models with the N18 engine are what you want

, Thursday, 25 September 2025 18:55 (eight months ago)

ooh thanks for that link

I've had a 2012 Jetta for ten years that's been completely trouble-free other than a few cosmetic things, but I sometimes need just a little more room and I don't want to own an "SUV." Something like the Countryman seems like a good compromise, plus it looks cool.

I may not do anything at all. Only an idiot would get rid of a car that gives them no trouble, but in case I'm an idiot one day, I appreciate the information.

ⓓⓡ (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 25 September 2025 19:12 (eight months ago)

let me just be one extra person to encourage you to hold on to the Jetta for as long as humanly possible

Recommended to purchase the S model in Manual.

Not Recommended to purchase the Base model in Automatic due to the CVT Transmission.

Well whaddya know she has a 2007 S model in Manual. Sweet spot.
