The idea that all fun in Amsterdam revolves around prostitution or marijuana smoking is a nonsense. the place is full of nice bars and cafes and is ideally situated for wandering and looking at stuff. There are great museums too, particularly the bit of the Rijksmuseum where they have loads of stuff about the times the plucky Netherlands kicked British arse.

dv is right. also, take a boat cruise around the canals. kind of tacky and touristy, but absolutely gorgeous. there's a big flea market on certain days and a really good antiques market that's open nearly every day for interesting shopping, and lots of great, cheap indonesian food. cyclists have their own lanes and pretty much rule the city, so if you're up for it then rent a bike and do some self-conducted tours.

There would be that, wouldn't it! :-) How cool.

Museums, boat tours, great old buildings - and you wouldn't want to call it merriment, but the Ann Frank house is unforgettable. I love Amsterdam & I've never smoked anything in my life.

Pornography?

The Rijksmuseum is lovely. As is the Van Gogh museum, cheesey and full of tourists but still utterly mind-blowing. I always thought Van Gogh was overrated until I saw his paintings in the flesh.

Take a canal boat tour, it's well worth it. Hold your nose coz the canals are smelly, but you will see some of the finest architecture in the world. The "Ugliest Building In Amsterdam" would be a jewel in any other city.

Go see some indierock at the Milkweg or be blasphemous and dance on the altar in the Paradiso.

Oh yes, and the beer. I love Amsterdam, I wish I could go there again, but it's too bad about the stalker.
