Amsterdam - Paris - Geneva - Zurich

I have crossed the magical 100,000 miles in my FF account, and so it is time to squander them. Looks like I'm going to get some time in October to go take some trains around Europe of 10 days or so. :-) Potentially, fly LAX/Houston/JFK to Amsterdam (because I want to take the upper deck on a 747), take a train to Paris, train to Geneva, trains northward to Zurich, fly home from Zurich or take a train to some other european city & fly home from there.

I've been any of these places but Paris, so tell me what I need to go visit. Also, why does Europe get all the nice TGV trains?? Unfair!

I'm sure it has its (possibly hidden) charms, but Zurich didn't seem like a must-see vacation destination to me. I can, however, recommend going to Luzern and admiring the absolutely breathtaking views of the mountains towering over the lake.

You can do a lot in 10 days, depending on what kind of pace you're comfortable with. But there's a lot to absorb just in Amsterdam and Paris (and there are separate ILE threads on those two places). If you want a destination between those two, I suggest somewhere in Belgium - either Bruges (Brugge) or Brussels.

Also...October is a great (read: cheap) time to travel. Consider saving your frequent flyer miles and just buying a cheap round-trip ticket. For example, you can find round-trip tickets to London in the Fall for $200-$300. With 100,000 F.F. miles, you could probably go to Australia for free (and those tickets aren't cheap).

Since the weather's so beautiful, stroll along the river / lake ? Alternatively you could go to Kreis 5 (Industrie Quartier / Hardbbrücke), shop on Viaduktstrasse, and have a drink at the end of the day at Frau Gerold's Garten.

I've been to Zurich a few times for gigs and I've always struggled to find things to do/see beforehand or the next day. The shopping streets around Oberdorfstrasse in the old town are worth a potter. If rare books are your thing there's a good antiquarian bookshop called EOS Benz that I really like, not cheap though. There's the Cabaret Voltaire of course but there's not much to see there, it's basically just a café. You'd have thought it would be some kind of Dada museum but it's not.

The Museum Reitberg in Zurich is well worth visiting for Indian and South East Asian art.
