Sacramento C/D, S/D.

My parents told me today that they want to move to Sac to be closer to the family and such that has moved there in recent years. I'm probably going to tag along until I'm in a better financial situation, try to go back to school, etc. What I'm looking for here from people who have spent some time there is your basic C/D: the city in general, S/D: places to go see bands, buy records, have fun, meet people blah blah blah. I searched and couldn't find a thread specifically for Sacramento so here goes....

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 21 June 2004 04:42 (nineteen years ago) link

destroy: bands from Sacramento who move to Brooklyn.

other than that, never been there.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 04:45 (nineteen years ago) link

haha which ones did that?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 21 June 2004 04:46 (nineteen years ago) link

I love downtown Sacramento: The rose garden, the governor's mansion, the river, the (original) old spaghetti factory.

Places to see bands: Old Ironsides (I saw Neil Hamburger's very first public performance ever here, talent is booked by KEVIN SECONDS!!!). The Cattle Club may still have shows? There's like an old movie theatre that has shows... The Capitol Theatre or something.

Record stores: there's RECORDS which gained fame/infamy for being used in the cover of DJ Shadow's "Endtroducing". Dimple Records is okay... There are quite a few House/Techno/DJ shops if that's your specialty. Also, Mordam does their distribution out of Sacramento so it's easy to find stuff out of that axis.

One of the better sushi bars in the bay area is downtown, name provided upon request.

Bands that left SACTO for NYC: !!!/Outhud

Hmmm, I'll think of more eventually.

i lived there from the age of 2 to 8 1/2. our house was right on the other side of a long drainage ditch which filled up with frogs every summer. i used to walk up to el camino market with my wagon and buy watermelons, and also go over to the elementary school to watch softball games and eat snowcones. assuming that you are approximately this age and are into these things, and that these things still happen in sacramento, it is classic! sadly I have next to no adult experience with the city except for going to a "baptism" at a freaky evangelical church filled with television sets and a nu-christian-rawk record store in the foyer.

oh the river is cool.

it gets fucking hot there though.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:43 (nineteen years ago) link

I lived there for four years as a teenager. It was kind of meh. There aren't a lot of really swell places to meet new people, from what I recall, but if you're creative about it I'm sure you can. Sign up for a fun class at one of the community colleges or something. As for music venues, I'd second the capitol theatre, which is also good for indie type movies. And there was some coffee shop downtown that has open mic nights and the occaisional small local band. I always liked dimple records. The best part of sacramento is that you're not far from sanfrancisco or tahoe. But overall, that part of california is a lot better if you're more into outdoors type things. Like kyle said, the river is awesome and folsom lake is cool.

seriously guys KEVIN SECONDS!!!

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 21 June 2004 17:22 (nineteen years ago) link

The architecture in the old part of town is nice, but other than that colossal DUD. It's hot, and you'll spend most of your time waiting to get out of the city.

Davis (about 20 min drive down I-5) is at least tolerable.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 21 June 2004 17:48 (nineteen years ago) link

It gets up to 115 degrees where we live now.

You mean Schlong the band? I saw them in Petaluma in like 1995 or 96 and it was the coolest show evah.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 22:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Yep! All of the above are bands.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 18:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Well Schlong was a fucking great live band fwiw, but the only album I heard was "Punk Side Story" which was West Side Story sung all off key and hilarious-like.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 18:48 (nineteen years ago) link

they were fucking incredible musicians, best I've ever seen in person. They can play circles around, say, Primus or Phish or whatever. There's also a CD where they cover Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" (and call it "Tumors"), but I haven't heard it.

dunno about the blatz thing. How do you know all this Norh Bay punk? I thought you were British, roxy?

I haven't noticed any difference except they seem to have more cds in there these days.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 9 August 2004 00:32 (nineteen years ago) link

i can't remember what she went on to, ned. i remember it was "something" though. as for the new direction gygax speaks of, i cant tell from the mailing list so it must be something involving the store itself.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 9 August 2004 00:33 (nineteen years ago) link

they sell CDs by people you've actually heard of now!

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 9 August 2004 00:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Windy Chien, 36, former owner of Aquarius RecordsAfter she sold Aquarius Records, a spiritedly independent music store in the Mission District, Windy Chien began to fret.

"I was worried that I would never find something like my store; the sense that we were all working on something together that we truly believed in," she said. "I wanted to find a sense of family again."

A friend working on the Gonzalez campaign asked her to help out, and Chien -- who knew Gonazalez from his visits to her store and considered him "a man of the people" concerned with the poor and disenfranchised -- found herself organizing a 30-events-in-30-days Gonzalez bonanza.

One hundred thirty parties and two campaign crushes later, Chien is tired and exhilarated.

"It was insane and it was wonderful," she said. "It was like when a rock band goes on tour. You're a little unit. It was beautiful. I loved it."

The experience demystified politics and awakened her to the possibility of doing political work in her post-Aquarius life, Chien said.

"I realized that politics is just a scene, too," she said. "There are leaders and followers, troublemakers and stars. But like music, politics is filled with people who are passionate."

Losing was a blow, but she remembers telling people the night of the election: "We lost, but I'm in a really good mood because we started a movement. We galvanized a movement. We really kind of won."

Capitol Garage on 15th and K - yummo sandwiches (I miss their old location tho')
Streets of London pub, 18th and J - killer fish and chips, good for a pint and some soccer
Nationwide Meats, 19th & H - best burgers in town. no frills, looks like a converted bank
Suzie Burger, 28th and P - next best thing to In N Out Burger. good burgers.
Corti Brothers, 59th and Folsom Blvd - best deli sandwiches in town. crazy good.
Gunther's Icecream, 2801 Franklin Blvd - yum yum YUM

The Beat, 17th and J st - big record store, new and used, lots to pick through.
Beer's Books, 9th and S - like a book version of the Beat. Can spend days in here.

We went to Nationwide and then walked to Old Sac (which is great in the Disneyland-sense) and slept on benches by the river while a bunch of kids made a youtube rap video. Later in the day I saw Arnold. Conclusion: Sac-town is def good for a day of fun.

iatee, Thursday, 26 March 2009 05:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Other thoughts: Governor's Mansion is pretty, Crest theater might have the greatest theater sign I've ever seen, just gorgeous.

iatee, Thursday, 26 March 2009 05:57 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, Old Sac is a tourist trap ... but then again, i am fond of tourist traps and the attendant cheesiness and crass profiteering (i also enjoyed SF's Fisherman's Wharf). i really liked the Railroad Museum and the restored Old West buildings there, too.

i only spent one day in Sacramento, so i can't really judge the town too much. but being used to crappy East Coast capitol cities (like Trenton, NJ and Albany, NY), it was a nice surprise that Sacramento was actually pretty nice and interesting.
