Cigarettes: Search/Destroy

This is the thread where smokers compare and discuss the respective merits of cigarette brands.

For a long time, I made it a policy never to buy the same brand twice in a row. Having a poor sense of taste, I didn't notice much difference between various brands. i have now settled for the cigarettes formerly known as marlboro mediums, although to be honest, apart from Lucky Strikes, I could smoke anything.

Marlboro reds, also Marlboro rolling tobacco tho I can never find it at petrol stations anymore. Marlboro lights look cool but don't really taste of anything much.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 21 June 2004 07:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i loved marlboro reds when i was hardcore heavy but can't touch them now. marlboro lights are indeed tasteless

are 'friends' electricsound? (electricsound), Monday, 21 June 2004 08:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I should put in that I liked Gauloise & Gitanes etc. back when I lived near a store that actually carried them, but found them too harsh for everyday/chainsmoking purposes. I've been on lights so long that full flavor anything gives me a headache.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 21 June 2004 08:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I only smoke Marlboro Menthols nowadays.

Hanna (Hanna), Monday, 21 June 2004 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I got sent some American Spirits from the States. They're additive free and you can tell. They're smoking bliss when compared to the shoddy Marlboro Lights you get in Blighty.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 21 June 2004 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I smoke Dorchester Smooth (formerly Lights). Here's why:

http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/food_and_beverages/tobacco/dorchester_cigarettes/_review/418691/

Best. Review. Ever.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 21 June 2004 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

American Spirit, yes. Camel Lights are decent too though.

Search: Camel Filters, Pall Malls, Lucky Strikes, Gauloises, wacky Japanese smokes that come in novelty packaging

Destroy: Marlboro anything (I don't like the mystery tang), Camel Lights (ugh), American Spirits (expensive, hippie, ass-tasting)

Camel Filters really are the perfect cigarette: cheap, tasty, and smooth-ish enough to chainsmoke.

adam (adam), Monday, 21 June 2004 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

search: gauloises blondes legeres/lights/'reds'. Normal Gauloises Blondes kind of kill my throat, but the lights are perfect, the right mix of chemical and tobacco and tar and sweet sweet nicotine. Plus they sell them at my nearest shop, so I've no need to trek to get them.

Camel lights are kind of alright, too.

When I was in Japan I smoked Seven Stars Charcoal Filter, which are a really nice smoke, if heavy on the tar.

These dooyoo fag reviews are GOLDEN. so my reasons for the GBLs

cis (cis), Monday, 21 June 2004 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

But American Spirit is horrible!! I don't know what they do to it but the tobacco always feels desiccated and musty, and they take forever to smoke. I bought an entire pound of loose Am Spirit tobacco once, on my "rollie" kick, and ended up just giving it away.

Charcoal filters are the way forward, as cis suggests. If I could buy Tareytons in England I would, but no one's seen fit to import them.

Murattis have charcoal filters, but they don't taste that good

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Monday, 21 June 2004 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Mild Sevens have got the charcoal filter. Mmm silky Japanese tar. Also, Caster cigarettes.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 21 June 2004 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh by the way, if anybody's in England, and you have to get smokes from a machine in a pub, see if they've got DUNHILLS in it. They always give you twenty Dunhills for some reason, instead of the standard 17!! I've tried this in three pubs.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 21 June 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: Gitanes if you want something strong, Winston Lights if you want something not-so-much.

But that's me.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Miild Sevens, mmmmmmm.

cis (cis), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

search camel of every variety except the lights, which should be destroyed. they have a really nasty taste.

I wish you could buy variety packs. or at least, a pack of regulars with one or two menthols thrown in for fun.

AaronK (AaronK), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

what's that other 'luxury' japanese brand? Awesome package but damn expensive

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Variety packs would be great, Aaron! Where's that million-dollar-ideas-you'll-never-do thread?!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, winstons. I smoked them for a little bit. then i bummed one to someone and they said they tasted like burning twigs. they were right.

but they're better than marlboros any day. mytsery tang indeed.

the worst I've ever had were these russian jobs that tasted like pure tar. not sure of the brand, but they were short and stubby.

although i can't smoke them a lot or very regularly (though i did at one point), i think lucky strikes are the best tasting cigarette ever. man. im gonna go buy a pack today. i love em in the summer.

AaronK (AaronK), Monday, 21 June 2004 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Huh? Luckies are awful... Marlboro mediums ROOLZ U R ALL GAY etc.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Monday, 21 June 2004 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I like their taste, but they're too harsh for me to smoke regularly. Cue variety packs.

sobranie cocktails are the nihilist's cig. pretty and cute to attract tots but taste of NOTHING, nothing at all besides the vague grey pressing of yr death. camel lights = like smoking double cream. dunhills = look rich taste rich. i vote luckies 4ever.

prima fassy (mwah), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I also got sent some Camel Turkish Blend which weren't too bad and some Camel Dark Mints which came in a very attractive case but didn't quite have the crispness of menthol tabs.

i always thought marlie regulars tasted like fertilizer.
when i smoked it was almost always:

but now they have those crazy grotesque warnings on them.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

American Spirits are nice but they're SO slow-burning that you can easily annoy yourself. Camel Wides are my de facto, but they're so classless that it's embarassing. I've been smoking cigarillos lately, which are especially nice because (1) they come in little tin containers (2) you needn't inhale as much, thus sparing your lungs some tear and (3) they're slightly cheaper than they used to be.

Parliament Lights /

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

parliaments are decent. one of my fallback brands, esp. if they're on sale. i think i mentioned this on another cigarette thread, but chesterfield light filters are rolled up perfection, and sadly unavailbable in the nyc metro area.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Dunhill; Camels (I do like Camel Lights Wides); Winstons aren't bad; Sobranies. Pall Malls are pretty stinky, and I tried American Spirit and they did make me sick. Anyway, I'm quitting--it's a horrible habit!

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the little Mayfair packs but I don't remember what they taste like.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 June 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

dog latin - you can get American Spirits in lots of UK places. Try Oddbins for a start.

I only smoke Cartier these days.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 21 June 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

West Virginia has the greatest place in the world. Gumbys Cigarette World. Drive-thru smokes. A carton of Parliaments were $31.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Monday, 21 June 2004 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's set up a UK/US cigarette trade and we can mail them to one another in bags of coffee all secretive like.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 June 2004 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i encountered a lot of strange brands in my online quest for cheap chesterfield light filters - lewiston, patriot, pyramid, mild sevens, ysl, double diamond... it's mind-boggling. there are hundreds of obscure makes, and i wonder where they're most popular (if they're popular at all). i've still not been able to find emanuelles, a polish brand with a beautiful varga-esque girl on the package.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 21 June 2004 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

the dunhill international is a rare and beautiful thing.

i am intrigued by nat sherman cigarettes but have never had the opportunity to smoke them.

matthew james (matthew james), Monday, 21 June 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

A lot of the "strange" names are the house brands of Native American nations. With the tax-free status of the tobacco, they've become a booming industry, both on the internet and off.

I tried some Nat Shermans once. My lungs were on fire for a week.

S: Bali Shag Turkish, and to a lesser degree Bali Shag Red. MYO is the way to go.

D: Most of the Camel special edition tins. There was one flavor that was precisely like if you actually tried to smoke a bubblegum cigarette.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I always liked those Dunhills in the gold pack that are not in the wide packs but I can't remember what kind they are. They come in a light (the light is in a white pack) and a regular and I like them better then blues or the reds in the wide pack. Also, the Benson & Hedges in the wide fancy pack are really nice. I think they may be British as well. And I like 555's too. I used to smoke Camel wides. Before that I smoked camel unfiltered and Lucky's. I still miss luckys sometimes -mmmmm, toasted. And Navy Cuts, mmmm, they are divine. Now I smoke American Spirits though. I'm fooling myself that they are better for me in some way. I don't mind that they take longer to burn. I only smoke half of them. This is another way that I fool myself.

Camel non-filters. A few times a year, I'll buy a pack of Sherman's Havana Ovals. They are most preferable to me, but cost about eight bucks a pack.

On the other hand, I buy my wife's smokes (Pall Mall) at the duty-free just across the border in Canada for $12. and change per carton.
Bad butts, good deal.

Men shouldn't smoke. It's effeminate. Women smoking are OK to look at but not as nice to smell / kiss / talk to.

I feel about men with cigarettes how I feel about men on motorcycles - how did they get this 'macho, cool' reputation? A guy smoking a cigarette looks like a big sissy to me - and the smallest Honda could bump the biggest and baddest Harley off the road with a mere tap, sending the leather-clad road warrior careening off the nearest hill. Vulnerability has never been badass. And smoking is for girls. Case closed. Moderator, lock the thread.

everyday smoking: Camel Lights, though I had my Marlboro and Winston phases. Rubios menthols, when in Guatemala. Loose American Spirit, if I had the patience to roll.

good smokes: Davidoff in the white pack. Smooth and wonderful. My friend gave me two cartons of these when he came back from France, he got them dirt cheap there and had a supplier and tried to sell them on the street but he's since quit(as have I).

Destroy: most of the cheapies, GP being probably the worst I've ever smoked. Also herbal cigarettes; it's like all the worst immediate side effects of smoking(sore throat, headache) without the joy.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Friday, 27 May 2005 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

also, I can corroborate the 'nasty' Camel Light thing, they were good mostly but about one out of every 6 or 7 packs had a really "chemical" aftertaste. serious quality control issues there

tremendoid (tremendoid), Friday, 27 May 2005 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I smoke cheap shitty Aus ones called Peter Jacksons which are very chemically but Ive got so used to them, that decent smokes are too overwhelmingly leafy/tobaccoey for me now.

REVIVE!

Why? Well, I would've started a new thread if i'd been able to find a picture online of what I'm about to explain. But I couldn't, so here I am.

I don't smoke so much anymore, but last week I was drunk and strayed not only from not smoking, but also from my usual brand of choice. I bought a pack of 20 Lucky Strikes, and very nice they've been too.

But the revelation came last night when I reached for a cigarette and found the pack apparently empty. This confused me, since in terms of weight alone, it definitely didn't feel empty, and I was sure I hadn't smoked that much.

I examined the pack a little more closely, and found it had this weird seam down one side. I ran my finger along it and THE DAMN THING SPRANG OPEN to reveal another 9 cigs in their own secret compartment out the back!

Ladies and gentlemen, I'd discovered THE GATEFOLD CIGARETTE PACKET. Nobody I showed it to, had ever seen or even heard of this before. It's really fucking cool, and more fag companies should use it.

It's even got a little "hey, smoking's great, do it more!" blurb inside the gatefold to counteract the "hey, smoking's like really bad for you" stuff on the front.

Am I missing a trick here? Are they all like this now? Or have I found some weird limited edition thing? Either way, it's ace. Almost worth starting smoking again proper!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

today i bought some marlboro lights SPECIAL EDITION. these come in a packet that's very much like a zippo lighter. they're bizarre.

I kinda miss smoking too, though hopefully not enough to start up again. I had my approximately 13 years of it...

Even as a nonsmoker though, I think that people who just have to tell you that they've never smoked a cigarette and never will are, well, assholes.

Camel Lights were my smoke of choice because regular Camel Filters, while they tasted better than the Lights, were too hardcore to smoke at the rate I liked.

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

In my cigarette smoking days it was Camels for preference, but I think that's largely cos they had the coolest packet, and everybody else smoked Marlboro bleeding lights.

Matt (Matt), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

six years pass...

Can anyone recommend some cigarettes commonly available in Canada?

Davidoff Golds used to be my brand of choice, but they have changed them quite drastically and I don't like them anymore. I have since tried Benson & Hedges Silvers, which were sort of okay; Camel Blues, which were okay but kind of like smoking air; and Players Smooth, which were absolutely disgusting.

On the USA side I like Camel Turkish Gold and Kamel Red Lights, and I don't mind Marlboro Lights. I seem to have better luck experimenting with US brands.

Canadians, please help me to smoke

Hans Holbein (Chinchilla Volapük), Saturday, 28 April 2012 07:03 (fourteen years ago)

welllllll, depending on where you are, you'll be able to find american and foreign brands in smoke shops. or, if you're on the right street corner, you can get smuggled packs of popular american brands for five bucks. not hard to find. usually marlboro or lucky strike, stuff like that.

as far as what's available at your local mac's or 7-11, if you like marlboro, there is a sort of offbrand version of it called rooftop. the pack looks identical. they look and taste like marlboro, too. i generally smoke rooftop silvers. or pall mall blue.

I've just found out why when I've occasionally, in the past, mentioned Kensitas cigarettes I've been met with blank stares: it's because they are Scottish cigarettes. I mean, Scottish cigarettes?!!?! Are there Welsh cigarettes or Irish cigarettes? What's that all about? It's like when I found out that no-one outside Scotland uses the (very useful) word "outwith" and I've been using it in London for 20+ years.
