So, where is everyone gonna go skate today?

ddb (ddb), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Today = Go Skateboarding Day
Tomorrow = Go Hospital Day

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i mean this is promoting over-aged doofuses to go out and TRY to skateboard?

skateboarding needs to be learned before age 10 or you are hopeless.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

It's all a plot - get the sk8rs into one place and then cull them. Skatx0r whacking day!

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow. I guess I will skate the DMV in SF tonight.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax, you ever skate "the new spot"....the bus station thingy...3rd and Army.......

ddb (ddb), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, it's pretty crowded... nice long blocks/pipes, you can get some good lines in. another somewhat notable spot--pier 7--is a couple blocks from my office. much smaller but you can have a lot of fun.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah...ive been to both those spots...Pier 7 is cool, manuals and what have you! I really liked the new spot, long lines...curvey ledges.

It was probably 3 years ago since I've been out that way. It wasnt that crowded then. But crowded SPOTS are a HUGE dud.

what's at the DMV to skate?

ddb (ddb), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

no skateboard - and my backtire blew out on my bike last night. Looks like I'm takin' the train.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

ddb:

nice! dmv = this one long (20') block that starts at curb height and then drops off about 2.5 feet. fun for nose/tail slides to kick in/out of. it's my local junior varsity old man spot.

you missed the old EMB!

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

shit, i better go skating today then. what a good idea. they should have a drunk skating day as well.

adam king, Monday, 21 June 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

dude ddb do you skate at that one spot off McGuinness?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

naw that shit is wack, leave it to the little polski dirtbags.

although there is this lil blond girl that skates there all the time. and she does kickflips.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

btw stencil, that is my block.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahaha good 'cause I was gonna make fun of you otherwise, ddb.

cutty bro you and my ladyfriend are practically neighbors!

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

sometimes, it kind of sucks...but its fun to skate with 11 year olds.
And there is (as cutty can confirm) a little 12 year old (or so) GIRL that can be seen rip'n all the dudes that skate there.

The ledges are pretty chewed up from the BMX kids. But it's fun, being down the street and all.

x-post to h.

I'm gonna try and get over to:

owls head skate park in Bayridge, Brooklyn. Very Fun/Very Free

RIP EMB.
I never got to skate there. Gygax you ever skate EMB?

ddb (ddb), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

another friend of mine with a similar name to yours, ddb, skates at Owls Head all the time. I think he's also got a key to the secret Greenpoint bowl or something.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

FUCK THE GREENPOINT BOWL.

Secret Keys and shit...so lame.

I went there once, "open to the public day"...it looked fun. But I'm not down with the CLIQUE/KEY bullshit.

ddb (ddb), Monday, 21 June 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

But I'm not down with the CLIQUE/KEY bullshit.

y'mean you don't get a key with Bike Posse?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

ddb (ddb), Monday, 21 June 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I can get down with that platform. More power to the people (on bikes).

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

ddb: yes! a field trip in 93... lots of stair jumps, ledges, a couple scary gaps that I never came close to making.

they tried to pay miniature homage to EMB at this place:
http://www.caliskatz.com/v4/skateparks/redwood_city_skatepark.asp

here's another place we go sometimes:

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 21 June 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax!, i had no clue you skated

JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 21 June 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I have PINS in my ankle and 6 inch scar running down my leg thanks to skateboarding.

CAN'T WAIT TO GET GNAR.

ddb (ddb), Monday, 21 June 2004 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax those parks look FUN!!

ddb (ddb), Monday, 21 June 2004 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

my right ankle: 6 inch scar on rightside, 4 inch scar on leftside, 2 pins (one that pokes a little bit out at times), 8 screws. YAY!

JaXoN: DO YOU SKATE?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 21 June 2004 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i just got a new board and i am going to learn

Jon Williams!!!!! (ROFFLE!@!@!@) (ex machina), Monday, 21 June 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

jon, you can't learn to skate at 20-something, just like girls can't REALLY skate

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 21 June 2004 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i just wanna be able to ride down the street

Jon Williams!!!!! (ROFFLE!@!@!@) (ex machina), Monday, 21 June 2004 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

and used to be able to skate a little :(

Jon Williams!!!!! (ROFFLE!@!@!@) (ex machina), Monday, 21 June 2004 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

also, while we're trading war scars, my ankle makes the most godawful noise you could ever imagine.

i also have hunks of flesh missing from my shins.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 21 June 2004 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

tried to go skating last night for skating day, and this policeman tried to arrest me. its now illegal to skate in my town. even thought there was no one around cos everyone was watching the england match. how fucking shit is that.

adam king (mangA Kid), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 06:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Illegal? On what basis?

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax!, i used to skate a LOT growing up, but it mellowed out soon after i got a car. i still have a board around and can still do silly little tricks (shove its, kick flips, sometimes a nose slide or 50/50), but i rarely ever get on it any more. i went out once with my friend Jay (above with the broken leg) and we went to a school yard, and tons of 13yr olds were just fucking smoking, and i got embarrassed and sat on the sidelines never to skate again.

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Nice. Aside from the obvious Venice hotspots, I remember a few great places in Playa Del Rey... one is a minimall parking lot hidden from the street. I don't have a large trick arsenal (esp. not for the kids today), but it's a great way to have fun and goof off with my friends who think they still have it.

have prob watched that 100 times (pre youtube!) but hadn't seen it in many years. that entire questionable video is still ingrained in my brain.

I love that Mullen was such an outsider in the 80s w/ the freestyle thing, but by doing so had such a huge jump on the 90s steet guys that he basically became the most influential skater of all time by default.

have prob watched that 100 times (pre youtube!) - see, I would say the same about this clip, the standard-bearer for such things a few years prior.

Mike Carroll in Questionable is top 10 all time no doubt. LOVE that video SO MUCH. So formative for me, and even though I only first saw it in 2002.

formerly EDB (ed.b), Friday, 9 November 2012 03:40 (thirteen years ago)

To say nothing of Danny Way or, y'know Pat Duffy and the most important handrail 50-50 of all time.

formerly EDB (ed.b), Friday, 9 November 2012 03:41 (thirteen years ago)

"if that ain't the white black cop i've ever seen" took us so long to parse out. my friend had the video few months before i saw it, so when i did see it i was like "ohh so this is where all your recent music obsessions came from". skate videos were huge music influence pre-internet.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Friday, 9 November 2012 03:48 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, I used to record songs from skate videos using a single-mic cassette recorder positioned next to the TV speaker - rocking out to a lot of ultra-mono JFA & Agent Orange!
