Mainly the second, but I'm a proponent of crosstraining. Limiting oneself to just one art is not a good idea. Keeps people from being limited in any field is not a positive thing, no matter what.

I think its a romantic notion, but I wouldn't hold it too close. I'm sure Yong Sool Choi never had to deal with a olympic wrestler shooting in for a double leg.

And yeah - the bigger money in Japan draws better talent. You may have also heard the rumors that it's plagued by organized crime involvement, too (another side effect of big money.) Which might account for some of those strange endings to matches.
