Or so a former opponent says with regard to the resignation of governor John Rowland.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Louisiana's got a lotta kudzu, tho.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno of any bayous in CT

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

besides, LOTSA northern corridor states have as much (if not more) corruption than anything in the south. and, as a good friend of mine once said, calling NY's politics "byzantine" is to insult the byzantine empire.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The guy sure sounded like a bit of a clown. Another 'good friend' of our president, like Ken Lay.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

he was actually considered "an up-and-comer" w/n the GOP at one point -- on a par w/ tommy thompson, tom ridge, and christie whitman.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 04:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate connecticut. i hate it i hate it i hate it.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

your grandpa complimented you on your hickey, tho.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

a state where joe lieberman is absolutely positively better than his 2000 contestant* has a LOT going against it.

(* who was accused of molesting underage girls and run-of-the-mill municipal corruption.)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 04:32 (twenty-two years ago)

So you're saying you'd want to pave the place.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd really like to repave I95 between new haven and new york.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 05:23 (twenty-two years ago)

NATIONWIDE BABY! WE'RE GOING NATIONWIDE!

& please let the door hit your ample backside on the way out, "Governor". Ian, get your asphalt out of my state, bitch - like the DOT needs more busy work, sheesh.

OK, you can take them out if you want.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, some bones of contention re: details in the WP article - downtown Hartford is a loooooong way's away from being rehabilitated (cf. the snazzy new convention center due in 2006 that's going to ultimately be a gridlock magnet & do nothing except transfuse a modicum of tourist dollars into the city that will undoubtfully make the city even more of a drive-time nightmare) (like, you'd think a rehab of downtown would involve sprucing up the hub of the capital city to attract folks to actually LIVE in downtown Hartford), and "bending labor leaders to his will" seems to equal "schmoozing unions, appointing the former head of the CT Laborers Union as head of the Department of Labor, and then smirking as all the idiot union heads to whom he made campaign promises get jobbed as he doles out lucrative contracts to his non-union campaign-financing contractor buddies." Hi, Mr. Tomasso! (another PDF link)

Providence and Hartford were in the same boat in the 80's...

Oh, come on, Jon. Willimantic is in the northeastern part of the state, about FIFTY MILES away from Hartford. You have to drive past boony li'l UConn (cough) to get to that gazebo (& Willimantic might actually qualify as a gazebo). You want me to start confusing Pawtucket w/ Providence?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, Rhode Island/Connecticut flame war. "Yeah, but our nutmeg is better than your sea shells!" haha.

It definitely sucks but Real Art Ways in Hartford is a great place, the Yale campus is nice enough, and Krispy Kreme is classic.

http://www.obeygiant.com/stickers/bootlegs/images/buddy.gif vs. http://www.sfgate.com/chronicle/pictures/2004/06/22/mn_conngover.jpg

Jon Williams!!!!! (ROFFLE!@!@!@) (ex machina), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

BTW, I am all for the "CT SUX" talk - I just want to make sure Jon's not confusing Hartford's abandoned store fronts w/ Willimantic's smack dens.

Re: Cianci vs. Rowland - what CT lacks in quality, we make up for in quantity. Rowland, Giordano AND Ganim. Depth is key.

Also, Otis is OTM, except I'd strike Krispy Kreme from the list. The Secret Theatre / TAZ in New London was / is(?) great, too. Also, foliage.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Ian and I ate at MYSTIC PIZZA this weekend, oh no

Jon Williams!!!!! (ROFFLE!@!@!@) (ex machina), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you go to the aquarium & see the seal?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't go to Mystic Pizza, go to Modern Pizza in New Haven.

Otis Wheeler (Otis Wheeler), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I am from CT, but live in Providence. This thread tears me up inside.

Sengai, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

who are all these RI people appearing suddenly?

HOLLA

Jon Williams!!!!! (ROFFLE!@!@!@) (ex machina), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I grew up in Connecticut and I'm the koolest! I also got sent to a bad boyz school in rhode island when I was 16 and I liked it there fine. I like Providence.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I miss the Bee Bee Dairy in Mystic. I didn't even know there were Krispy Kremes in CT. I'm really out of touch. Though I was just at the Aquarium a couple of weeks ago. It's so much better than when I was a kid.

I love Misquamicut, it feels like some trashy Spring Break Redneck Riviera beach town. Right next to posh Watch Hill. I really don't know much else about Rhode Island, even though I grew up 20 miles from the border.

Arturo the Liberator, Thursday, 24 June 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Arthur, I've a Krispy Kreme breathing down my asscrack. There's also one somewhere in upupupstate NY (AKA Fairfield County), I think.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

How come you never hear about the beaches in Conn.? Are they crap?

Vermont Girl (Vermont Girl), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to an okay one near Mystic once.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

but my main guess would be "Long Island Sound" in general.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

The beaches in Hartford are terrible.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The beaches in RI are nothing but jellyfish and seaweed. I like them anyway.

I love Krispy Kreme because at the drivethrough, they don't ask you how many donuts you want, they ask how many dozen. I also like to watch them swim in their vats of glaze.

I'm always disappointed at how Connecticut residents pronounce Mianus.

Otis Wheeler (Otis Wheeler), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Otis, you're going to the wrong beaches.

Other recent fantastic Republican Governors:

Bill Janklow - South Dakota
Got tough on crime, got elected to the house, killed a guy in his car while speeding and yet didn't get any real jail time. He must be a real stand up guy.

George Ryan - Illinois
Held in esteem for his fight against the death penalty, oh yeah he has some real crooked friends got indicted and lost his last election.

earlnash, Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been living in CT for a year now and it's forced me to bring "cunty fuckotash" back into heavy rotation when road-raging. I don't like what CT has made of me. I want to leave.

joshie (hammy), Thursday, 24 June 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Why the hell did you ever remove "cunty fuckotash"!?!

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 24 June 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I spent 5th grade just outside of Hartford, and my mother grew up there, and yeah, CT sucks.

I only went to Providence once, and it was on a Sunday, and downtown Providence on a Sunday was the most closed I've ever seen a town be. Things were a little more alive over by Brown.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 24 June 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

downtown is kind of... the financial district

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, Port Washington hardcore bands suck.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

A-hem. "Shadows Fall" are from the city that is worse than Hartford - Springfield, MA. You can exponentially shrink Hartford and have Springfield = equal the crime rate and minus anything cool like "Real Art Ways". But Springfield is trying. And I love struggling East Coast cities - the politics are so intense. Providence's ex-mayor is in the slammer, Springfield's ex-mayor has been probed by the FBI.
Providence is really wonderful - the "water fire" , good bokstores, decnt pubs, and easy access to the ocean (even if it is Point Judith).
The real dead cities are Bridgeport (Ct) and Holyoke, Pittsfield, Lowell, Worcester etc in MA. But even those cities are becoming rehabilitated with impoverished artistic types finding warehouse spaces and starting community events. That's how it always happens.
