As a non-skater though, I do find it a little annoying to walk round on a more crowded afternoon and nearly get whacked in the teeth because some kid boganed his ollie-up and sent his board flying into my face. That's just me though.

sadly, no. i have an instant crush on any boy on a skateboard, which leads to embarrassing 'i'm old enough to be his MOM!' thoughts more and more these days. perhaps i should get hit in the face with a board or something to cure me...

1. (Inevitably about authenticity): I noticed a couple of years ago a trend in style mag interviews for artists to base claims to authenticity on their having been skaters. I suppose it sounds better than 'I have a degree in film from the New York School of Film and Television', but it made me wonder why skating makes you better at creating? Or is that not what they were saying? Were they saying something like 'I have street cred because I have collided many times with the pavement'?
2. Skating is all about 'failing better'. You jump over the little ramp, flip your board up into the air, spin it, and hope it lands wheels down and you land on it and continue. 9 times out of 10 this chain of events does not go to plan. You fail, and an overwhelming compulsion to fail again, fail better, overcomes you. Dropping bits of buttered toast towards the ground to see whether they'll land butterside up is not nearly as satisfying.
3. Skaters always have the best hair. If I were a 15 year old girl I would almost certainly be a skate groupie.
(By the way, I did skateboard when I was a teen, but neither I nor skating was cool at that point.)

ps Momus I think there's been, since at least the 80s but arguably even longer, a very strong connection between visual arts and skateboarding. I think the pictures of those boards attests to that, although board graphics are just one part of the puzzle. I'd guess that a decent number of 80s and 90s-grown artists - photographers, painters and drawers, graf artists, filmmakers, graphic designers, clothing designers - owe most of their seminal art experiences to skateboarding in some way.

Spike Jonze is what he is because of his background in the skateboarding community.
2. skating is FAR from Failing Better. It is more like SUCCEEDING BETTER. Yes you jump off a ramp and flip a board...and 9 x out of 10 x you may miss....but YOU KEEP TRYING. And when you do LAND it, it makes it all worth it. Which may sound hooky, but it's the truth. I mean think about the dynamics of FLIPPING a WOODEN BOARD with your FEET in the AIR and landing on it's PROPER SIDE and RIDING AWAY. It's amazing. FAILURE has nothing to do with it, it's Precision. To an outsider (read: square) it may seem like failure.
3. yes, this is true, we ALL have amazing hair.
x-post to mangakid.yeah cops are a drag...but you move on, you go to another spot and another spot and another spot.

I do apologise if I seemed 'square' by putting it that way. I did notice that as I walked past those skaters this afternoon, they did a distinct double-take. Normally studiedly indifferent to passersby, they did a definite 'Blimey' as I passed. 'Blimey' was almost visible in the air above them, for precisely one second. Perhaps it was 'Blimey, what a square!' Then again, perhaps it was 'There is the next international look for our movement! Forget the Vikings, the KKK, the Druids and black kids!'
