England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson says Wayne Rooney is the greatest teenage talent to emerge since Pele.

It's great what he's achieved for us but come on...
Why must we get carried away like this?

I think three Rooney threads in two days would be excessive, so I'll ask it here: TS: Wayne Rooney vs Antonio Cassano.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 07:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Cristiano Ronaldo.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 07:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronaldo has impressed me but I guess noones had the impact of Rooney....yet.

Rock Bastard, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 08:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I prefer Cassano but I'm a Roma fan. I like his cheeky-lunatic persona. Plus he's (marginally) better looking than Rooney, and certainly sexier (check his tatooes! much better than Rooney's pudgy white knees!)

I had thought Cristiano was all flash and no spunk, but he's impressed me in this tournament.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone's better looking than Wayne Rooney! Let's face it, he's repulsive!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

He's English tho. All the better to scare defenders.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i always get the duelling banjos in my head when i see Wayne...

TS: Rooney vs Gazza?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Gazza's much better looking but Rooney's more intelligent

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Where is that photo of his family walking out of the sea? It's my true favourite.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

you mean he paid for those things falling out? xpost

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish Sven hadn't mentioned Pele. But perhaps we should remember that he didn't actually say 'the greatest teenage talent to emerge since Pele.' He said: "I don't remember anyone making such an impact on a tournament since Pele in the 1958 World Cup".

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

What he meant to say was "I don't remember anyone OF THAT AGE making such an impact on a tournament since Pele in the 1958 World Cup". Tho I don't even know how true that is.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I want Rooney to stay at Everton, for a very long time.

the bluefox, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

- another request for the rooney family walking out of the sea photo -

which one's rooney's mum?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

That's unkind. It was that photo that first made me become extremely fond of Rooney, footballing dreams and all that.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

The photograph is proof that Rooney was not of woman born and actually spawned by a megalomaniacal genius in an undersea laboratory. A couple of seconds earlier all three of them were covered in seaweed.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with nick.

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The family were so poor they had to walk across the Mersey

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

They were so poor, the men in the family could not afford shirts and they were all forced to wear children's trousers

Shaun Of The Dead deleted scene

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know the photo of old. But I hope that comic enthusiasm for it does not lead back to the old business re. mockery of poor people.

I know that Rooney is not, now, a poor person.

the bluefox, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a poor person I can mock all I want

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

self-deprecation doesn't count

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i guess may have been mean about rooney's father there having man-boobs. however i don't understand how that picture has to do with footballing dreams.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Hideous misshapen sea creatures can become footballers too.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

when the seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think the Rooneys are a bit porky.

stevem le brat (blueski), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry i forgot the prolonged gulp of water

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)
