Hey dudes!

I have one of these:

http://www.recording-history.org/images/Dictation_images/audograph-ad.jpg
(Gray Audograph Vinyl Disc Recording Machine)

I'm going to be using it to record records! However, blank disks for this are hard to come by. I did test run with a piece of plastic last night and it cuts great. Now, here is what the disks look like.
http://i18.ebayimg.com/01/i/01/d9/da/6c_1_b.JPG

I need a reliable way to punch/cut/hack a hole in the middle of the disc in that shape. Any ideas? The material is a plastic divider from a 3 ring binder. It sounds fine.

PS - here is a picture of my experimnetal disc I cut!

Also here is discussion of these machines on ILM: Dictaphones that use vinyl/acetate disks?

Surely there must be some kind of drill press available that would serve your hole punching purposes? Maybe like this?:

rasheed: i could punch a hole with a fucking hand drill if i needed to. I've been cutting the outside using an xacto knife. The problem is that the inside needs a percision gear-like pattern.

How thin is this plastic, again?

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Dean, thinner than most 7 inches. think flexi-disk, flexible binder cover

Jon Williams!!!!! (ROFFLE!@!@!@) (ex machina), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

If you need a inside hole pattern like the blue disc has above, I suppose that you could fashion that design out of metal and then hammer it into the plastic. It wouldn't be that easy to get the metal shaped right, but if the disc plastic is thin enough, it should work consistently.

JON START THE LABEL.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

yea, that's why my artfag friend was suggesting basically. So get like a thin strip(s) of metal, bend it into the right shape and maybe mount it in some modeling compoung or something so you can hammer that?

Jon Williams!!!!! (ROFFLE!@!@!@) (ex machina), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

The recording I made up above sounds like CAROLINER

you may be able to find a gromet that looks like that.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

No definitions were found for gromet.

Suggestions:

- Make sure all words are spelled correctly.
- Search the Web for documents that contain "gromet"

Jon Williams!!!!! (ROFFLE!@!@!@) (ex machina), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

searching the web for gromit = bondage pr0n?

Jon Williams!!!!! (ROFFLE!@!@!@) (ex machina), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Jon Williams!!!!! (ROFFLE!@!@!@) (ex machina), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I just give you crazy mad props for the coolness of that machine, Jon Roffle? holy FUCK that thing is cool

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

there may even be a screw out there that looks like that.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

(13:38:13) XXXXX: so, cut a thin strip of aluminum flashing (get a thickness that doesn't seem too bendy...) maybe a 1/4 in thick strip, maybe more if you need... then make it into the shape you need it (sharp edges up, of course)... affix that to a piece of wood like a small disc just a little bigger than the hole...- you probably will have to cut into the wood the shape of the gear/star for a place to put the metal... then you could just use a hammer and hit that metal shape into the plastic.... you probably will have to put something underneath, possibly a platform-like thing with a hole cut into the center, so the metal goes through and not just against...
(13:38:18) XXXXX: does that make sense?
(13:38:49) WIZARD IS HUNGry: yea that's a good idea
(13:38:52) WIZARD IS HUNGry: esp the hole
(13:39:11) WIZARD IS HUNGry: i would mount it some kind of not shatterable modeling compound maybe

Jon Williams!!!!! (ROFFLE!@!@!@) (ex machina), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

J0hn D, they're great for vocal tracking also. Instant lo-fi authenticity, ha ha.

Jon Williams!!!!! (ROFFLE!@!@!@) (ex machina), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

(13:40:34) XXXX: I was just thinking,,,, if you had something that was basically a big nail, but in the right shape, you could just use a hammer...
(13:41:13) WIZARD IS HUNGry: yea, the only thing is that the teeth are small
(13:41:29) XXXX: hmmm... tricksy
(13:41:47) WIZARD IS HUNGry: i might just use two aligned strips of aluminum for each tooth rather than trying to bend a single sheet for all the teeth

you need something from this game:

that machine is awesome

chris(t)hamrin (artdamages), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

You can get x-acto knives with razorblade tips -- you set it at the diameter you want and use it to score your plastic. No metal master-molds, etc.

ModJNoReally, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

uhhh i am currently using an exacto knife and it suxxxx

Jon Williams!!!!! (ROFFLE!@!@!@) (ex machina), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Why don't they make robot chimps with sharp circular penises and plastic-fucking fetishes? The world would be so much easier...

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

HEY JON I THINK YOU CAN GET XACTO KNIVES TO CUT STUFFS
