clearly, as a canadian, i don't know anything about football, so go easy on me here.

but seriously, isn't he supposed to be like a golden god or something?

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm better than Pele

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Clearly Canadian! what happened to that stuff?

andy, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I had never heard Beckham's voice until last night on the radio. It sounded very high. It just seemed all wrong to me. I had the accent right though. I was also surprised to realize that I'd never heard his voice before.

Hunter (Hunter), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

his voice is awful but he is a great great player and will demonstrate it properly on the Euro 2004 stage before it's all over i'm sure/hoping

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he has been brilliant as a playet and a captain in this tournament. I don't understand people who critisize him.

Pingu, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

He's good. He's not great.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 08:30 (twenty-one years ago)

becks has been quiet in this tournament, but his performances have been solid enough. he's very much played on the right wing (2nd half against france he was basically a wing-back) which perhaps means he is unable to have as massive an influence on the game as people would like.

positives = had an important hand in 3 goals, does a lot of useful defensive work with gary neville.

i think that it's probably from people that are watching the games but are not normally football fans (like me). beckham's name is known to everyone, so you'd expect him to be really fantastic. but he hasn't done anything very interesting so far. instead, it's all been rooney, who i'd never heard of before last week or whenever...

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 08:35 (twenty-one years ago)

David Beckham is only good when he and his wife are living in the same country.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 08:35 (twenty-one years ago)

david beckham - c or d

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 08:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, I reiterate, being able to pass the the entire width and half the length of the pitch with pinpoint accuracy, especially over vulnerable backpedalling defenders, is more important than any fancy pretty tippy-tappy stuff. In fact, its one of the greatest weapons a team could wish for. Beckham does this = he is a great player.

Complaining he can't dribble and do mazy little runs is like complaining that Sol Campbell can't finish.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd llike him to be able to take on a defender occasionally, especially when he's playing out on the wing, but other than that he's been good.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 08:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know - I sometimes think those crossfield balls are often a bit... Hollywood? [/Hansen]

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 08:42 (twenty-one years ago)

some joke about sol campbell not being able to finish.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm – the Beckham debate.

Classic – his right foot, dead ball situations, crosses, commitment

Dud – His pace, his left foot, his tackling

The whole thing of Beckham is his ability to deliver a killer ball – he did this for Man Utd, and he still does this for Madrid (the 50 yard ball onto Raul earlier in the season). He is not the quickest. England have Gerrard, who has the same passing skill, more pace and better tackling. But, simply, is a lot uglier.

As they said at Real Madrid – Ronaldinhio cannot be a Galactico (one of their expensive, star players) because he isn’t good enough looking.

Beckham is a good player, and – fair to say – a good looking bloke. Hence the press.

___ (___), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 08:45 (twenty-one years ago)

His xfield passing has been aimless, but that's because he's had no one to aim at, simply. Rooney likes to drop back a bit and Owen is too slow to capitalise on them anymore. What Beckham has been very good at is ticking the team over, and playing some very insightful short-to-medium passes that bring in other players - witness his contribution to Gerrard's goal. Sure, it'd be nice if he played outstandingly and did something truly memorable, but I'm not sure that's necessary with how we're playing right now.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 08:46 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, but there is an argument, not held by football partisans i know, in fact, actively rejected by football fans, that truly great players, or at least players perceived as great, are those that crossover to a casual audience and do great things.

beckham may be a great player, and it is arguable that consistent high level team performances dont get you marked as a great player by the wider world, but that the spectacular does.

beckham isnt one of the stars of this tournament because he hasnt delivered the spectacle, the show, the individual brilliance, that people expect to see.

this doesnt denigrate from his performances in any way, but, just as football people complain about those who are not expert enough, it is also possible to suggest that a great player is one that transcends that barrier, so it is plain for all to see. and beckham has certainly done that in the past, and it is not unreasonable for people to expect that here, and they are not seeing that particular facet

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 08:47 (twenty-one years ago)

or, to put it another way, lets talk about rockism in football

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 08:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Beckham is sulking a bit about not being allowed to play in the middle.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Ronaldinhio cannot be a Galactico (one of their expensive, star players) because he isn’t good enough looking.

Yeah that Roberto Carlos is a real hottie...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the key is that mark is a canadian, so he's probably watching as an euro 2004 tourist, like i am, and beckham hasn't done anything flash or interesting to the casual viewer. i'm sure he does something to earn all that money, but it's 'back end' stuff, i'm guessing? (too tired to think of another term, waiting for pervy jokes to start)

xpost-- gareth is exactly right. although i heard that while i was in the bathroom he (becks, not gareth) showed what was up his shorts in a clear shot on tv. that's a spectacle, surely?

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 08:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Carlos arrived before the Galactico thing started really, plus he's a defender by job description = he can be ugly.

Ronaldo's yr ugly man. I think they signed him for his lush (ex)wife.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Gareth and Colette OTM pretty much - Beckham hasn't done anything spectacular, but the spectacular is what's expected of him. My mum knows nothing about football but was still impressed by his big lob from the half way line against Wimbledon and his free kick against Greece, for example. Beckham hasn't done anything like that in this tournament, yet. Neither has Owen, when people want to see Argentina 98-esque wondergoals. But I'd venture to guess England wouldn't be doing as well without them.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Laws of physics - a ball in the air moves quicker than a ball at the feet of a human. Hence a quick whipped cross from 50 yards out is a more potent weapon against a backpedalling defence.

Beckham's pass completion rate is 2nd in the tournament isn't it?

Beckham's in the same boat as Owen - people fear them, even if their form isn't great - the knowledge that they could do something can affect the way the opposition plays, hence Owen is making space for Rooney as teams fear owen's pace, so defend a bit deeper than they might. If they sit higher (as Croatia did, Owen usually gets two men on him which creates space for others - Lampard, Scholes and the boy Wayne). Having two feared strikers is immensely useful. The same with Beckham - when he gets the ball out wide, teams have been breifed to scarper back quickly to close off the space between the goal and their position. In so doing, they vacate a huge space in the middle of their half, which is where we have done most of our damage from. That fact that beckham hasn't put that killer ball in is therefore less important, as fear of Beckham is making goals. It's amazingly fantastic to have players who by their very reputation can make teams play differently -not only are you playing England as they are, you're also playing England as they could be. You don't have to be bigotron to have the words 'zone' and 'uncertainty' springing to mind.

Funnily enough so did I. Great on set pieces, rub elsewhere.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 24 June 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Well tonight he couldn't hit a barn door with a sledgehammer.

Apparently,he was interviewed earlier.I quote:

Beckham:"Well,I like them cos they make my breath all fresh and minty, and Victoria likes them cos they're only two calories each."

Lineker:"Erm,David...I was asking about TACTICS!"

Eugene Speed (Eugene Speed), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

HAHA OH MY!

What is he, 28? So he'll probably get one more World Cup and one more European Championships, assuming they qualify and he remains reasonably adept?

'Also, I reiterate, being able to pass the the entire width and half the length of the pitch with pinpoint accuracy, especially over vulnerable backpedalling defenders, is more important than any fancy pretty tippy-tappy stuff.'

nope. There is the pretty stuff and then there is the actual beating of 2-3 players that is the holy grail. Czech republic => good passing and movement along the field and a team working together for that, and they've played the best football so far (not saying they are gonna win it, they might overdo on the mix of attack and defending- too risky!- and surely a bad sign if you get 9 points from all yr three games).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 25 June 2004 07:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Becks seems to have totally lost his running legs. Wasn't there a statistic that he used to cover about 10km each match? I'd be surprised if he ran a third of that last night. Wonder if the change of training regimes at club level is a factor.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 25 June 2004 08:09 (twenty-one years ago)

eight years pass...

i thought he was good enough for the olympics at least
