well they do, don't they?

Feel free to talk about other kinds of statue that look wrong and post pictures, of course.

Inspired not only by the cover of PF's book, but also the statue of Donald Dewar in the centre of Glasgow.

No, you're wrong! I like statues with glasses! I feel sorry for the myoptic statues that are just squinting. Except for the big scary Karl Marx statue with the freaky eyes in Highgate Cemetary.

(of course this only really works in metalwork statues. I suspect it would look terribly wrong in stone. It's all about the medium.)

Someone's broken Donald Dewar's glasses I noticed. The top bit of the frame is now curled like an evil eyebrow.

the funny thing about the Dewar statue was when I first saw it, my thought processes went:

There's someone doing one of those things when they pretend to be a statue and expect ppl to stand round gawping and give them money

(walked a bit closer)

That's far too tall to be an actual person

(walked a bit closer)

OMG, it actually *is* a statue!!!

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 10:30 (twenty-one years ago)

No, see, Mt. Rushmore proves my point. That just looks wrong, like the glasses are attached to his face. In metalwork, you can have nice wire frames that add to the sense of myopia.

isn't it a little premature to make a statue of Sven Goran Erikson already??

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

and place it in Glasgow???

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe he's doing some kind of bizarre Gilbert & George tribute.

That Eric Morecambe statue is fantastic. I'd like to see it fo' real - where is it? Tell me it isn't in Morecambe!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

There's no answer to that.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, ken c, that's what my Mum said when she saw the Dewar statue.

Cathy (Cathy), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Dewar's glasses have been broken and repaired several times. They seem to have given up now, a bit like the traffic cone on the equestrian statue outside the Gallery of Modern Art.

When the statue of Dewar first went up, a cone appeared on his head. It seemed like a kind of tribute.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a world of difference between placing a traffic cone on the head of a statue and actually vandalising the statue!

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

could they not place Dewar on a taller plinth which was harder to scale?

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I fear that somebody would relish the challenge. Maybe they could cover Donald in that spikey black anti-vandal paint.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 11:04 (twenty-one years ago)

they should electrify him.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

'The Electrification of Donald Dewar' should be an Edwin Morgan peom title.
