Cos up here in Scotland it's pretty fecking difficult. "Want to work in a call centre?"

"Uh... no".

"Ah well. You're stuffed then".

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

move to london. there are some jobs there. i think you might like it.

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

THIS THREAD HAS BEEN LOCKED BY AN ADMINISTRATOR WHO IS LAUGHING LOUDLY,
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

move to cali, become ned's houseboy

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Freelancing is a bitch. London is too expensive to just "up and go" you know? Hey Pete - you want some jovial threads about Shakira and Nicky Wire or you want a more serious, ILE type thread? If you want the former then keep acting like a smarmy wee tosspot.

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

but there are jobs in london. what about applying for them, before you move, giving an address of someone you know here, so it looks like you are already here, then moving knowing you have a guaranteed income awaiting you. i think this is what most people moving to london have to do, its what i had to do

what about other alternatives in the uk, where the economy is more bouyant and there are jobs? manchester might be an option? leeds is very bouyant, plenty of things happening there too. it could be a good option

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Scotland is tough to get a job in. My brother works in computers, lives in Glasgow, but is only there at the weekend because he works in London. It sux.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

what about other alternatives in the uk

why limit yrself to that? the beauty of the EU is you can move to any of the 25 member states (well certainly the 15, the rules might be different for the accession countries....Baaderist?) without needing a work permit.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I apply to lots of places in England, actually, it's very difficult though - not having a really good friend in London that I could use as an address. I have people I certainly know, and like, in London but that's as far as it goes. Scotland is virtually impossible to get a job in.

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

dudes move to SPAIN asap.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

no jobs but it's NICE.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

cousin Norman had a real fine time last year.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"It's probable they'll hire me, probably never."

I am not a mandible (Barima), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I just got back from Spain (where I was working from holiday a new idea which i really rather liked, did two hours of policy work on a manky old laptop in the morning and spent the rest of the day in the pool). It was lovely and sunny, and they certainly are dying for decent tradesmen on the building sites, there is a massive shortage.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a full time job in Scotland not in a call centre. It is pretty easy if you have the right qualifications.

First question - do you find the idea of Nicky Wire in a banana suit amusing.

Yes = rejection letter
No = next question

If you are a CA, Calum, it should be no trouble at all.

___ (___), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd help to be fluent in Spanish, though.

TBA (TBA), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey I remember certain ILXors moving to Scotland cos they had got jobs there so it caint be that hard.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Calum Robert Waddell, Professional Jizz Mopper Esq.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

What's a CA?

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

there are a large number of people on this board that live in london (and other cities for that matter), perhaps one of them might be willing to let you use their address for cv purposes

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd help to be fluent in Spanish, though.

probably don't need it in Malaga. Too many damn British people.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

c-man, I think you should use "smarmy" a little less often, especially in job applications.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

this is one of the reasons why britain sucks, an inability with other languages, which would open up so many doors.

i am also guilty of this

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh I agree. Languages would be an advantage in this rotten country. Scotland sucks the worst though, we've nothing to offer anyone.

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

What's a CA?

I'll take that as a no! If you were a Chartered Accountant, I could probably get you a job in the space of about 2 weeks, no bother.

___ (___), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I knew someone at uni was training at being a Chartered Accountant and he came right out into a job. Thing was his girlfriend still figured she'd get into film (which, to be fair, if she was big breasted and had long blonde hair and no knowledge of movies at all she probably could have) and so she kept badgering away at attempting to get a media placement. Never worked out for her though, which is a damn shame. She was a nice lass.

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, there something in that comment which suggests why you are not being snapped up by the work market. I wonder what it is?

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Too right. I would never hire anyone who referred to university as 'uni'.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Pete in "smugness alert" yet again. It was a mix of bitterness and humour in the above statement in case you need it spelt out.

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh I agree. Languages would be an advantage in this rotten country. Scotland sucks the worst though, we've nothing to offer anyone.

C-Man is Gordon out of Ballboy!

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Knee jerk bitterness about perceived sexism kind of shines through though in interviews. I got a media placement through hard work and prostituting myself out for no money. If that's wanbt you want, then you will get it. Whether you like it when you get it is a thoroughly different manner.

Yes, there are plenty of jobs, they are just jobs you don't want to do.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

serious, I think I would just about kill for an EU passport. Esp. if the Chimp wins in November.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

marry a European, hstencil.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

And then kill her.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

you should become a lawyer.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

probable.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"I got a media placement through hard work and prostituting myself out for no money."

So did I and others I know. Doesn't always lead to something though. It did in your case, congratulations. What do you want? A chocolate watch? It doesn't work for everyone. In fact it works for very few. Some get lucky, some don't. That's the media. I'm a lot more qualified and experienced than others I've met who work full time in high paying jobs. The "I did it so can anyone" is logistically impossible. It is however a nice wee Thatcherite belief that you should definately hang onto as it shows you as the moron you are.

"If that's wanbt you want, then you will get it."

See above.

"Yes, there are plenty of jobs, they are just jobs you don't want to do".

You should work for the DSS. You really should. You'd have a great time telling that to perfectly qualified teachers/ doctors/ other professionals who cannot find work. Nice one mate. Put your wee cross next to New Labour will you? Thanks.
