How do you get rid of things that are too big to put in the bin?

I mean, I've gotten rid of things like sofas and beds before by phoning up the council, but what do you do with the smaller items that are still too big for the bin? Specifically, I want to be rid of: a clothes horse, an ironing board, a hoover, a small ugly cabinet, a plastic sledge, a pointless lamp. Many other things & I think even if you are allowed to phone up the council and say, "Would you send a large lorry round to pick up my small plastic sledge?" there is a limit of three items at a time or something. If I had a car, I suppose, I'd take all this crap to a tip, but otherwise, where the fuck does all the junk go?

Charities will usually take furniture. I would suggest the tip but without a car it could be difficult. maybe you could break these items down somehow.

Is there a municipal lake within walking distance?

Yes, sometimes I chop things up into very small pieces and put them in the bin, but I do not have the brains to chop up an ironing board.

There will be a council tip somewhere - you take it there.

Is there a building site or something (preferably not domestic - that's just rude) with a skip near you at the moment? Dump it in under cover of darkness.

put it on the street - someone will take it.

Tie helium baloons to it until it drifts away. If you are really lucky a gust of wind will take them to a hithertoo undiscovered civilization in the Alps which will worship your clothes horse as some kind of god.

If charities is not an option you can contact a recuperation center. If this is not an option either then call your municipality, here they also collect big pieces so they'll tell you when and where do drop it.

Put it in the foyer and tape a sign to it that says "Free".

See if someone nearby has a skip and ask them if you can dump your ironing board in it. Offer them a fiver for the privilege. Or, if you are only allowed three items at a time, tape some of the items together. Claim it's a failed sculpture.

theres a tip at drayton park nr arsenal. its my fave. you drive in, have a few precious moments to unload the stuff, then run away before enormous diggers advance forward to crush all the shit

I gotta admit, living in Toronto is you just get it out to the curb on the right day of the week and they will pick it up. Sofas, beds, TVs, chairs and large TV boxes no questions asked. As long as it ain't sharp and pointy they really don't seem to care.

I'm on a freecycle mailing list, local people post what they have and other people post that they want it and come get it, it's pretty neat. Google 'freecycle' and maybe it's in your area.
