Do you refer to people by their online 'handles' even if you know their names?

I used to call Ian "Orion".

People love Gravity and Ebullition! (ex machina), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anyone do this to people's faces?

People love Gravity and Ebullition! (ex machina), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

people manage to call me "hstencil" or "stence" in real life, it's embarassing if I'm with other non-internet-mentalist people.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. The Pinefox and RJG.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I just refered to you that way on aim!

People love Gravity and Ebullition! (ex machina), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I call N. N.

the bellefox, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

A good thing to remember is that Madchen (before she was Madchen?) gave The Pinefox his definite article.

the bellefox, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

None of you exist to me in a non-abstract way, so whatever.

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, even if he hasn't used said handle in nearly two years.

the junefox, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I do. Actually, I was someone's maid of honor and couldn't for the life of me remember any name for her but Bunny.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Zemko, Jel, Tracer, Starry and occasionally Felicity and the Pinefox. Dr C I have never heard called by his real name.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the definitive article was always there. I was just the first to recognise it.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

definite, I mean.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

well i get carsmile all the time...

also what DC said, although i do know the secret of Dr C :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

My old Internet moniker was also a real-life nickname so there was very little confusion.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

You before you added Venga?

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Huck, you wound me!

Depends on the name. I have sometimes been tempted to call Huck "Huck" but never to call DB "Donut Bitch". Also I refer to Ned as "the Ned" even though that's not his handle.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

someone besides oops, Huk-El, Momus or NA willing to bait me.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Online handles in my mobile phone book: Carsmile, Honey, Idleberry, Starfire, Steady Mike.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually have the Pinefox in my phone as The Pinefox. I was going to put him in just as Pinefox but he insisted on the definite article.

Carsmile is in there as Carsmile as well, although originally he was in there as 'Twat', which later mutated to 'CarsmileTwat'.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I have phone numbers of ilxors as such: $REALFIRSTNAME $HANDLE

People love Gravity and Ebullition! (ex machina), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a friend who is in my phone as KRAFTWERK and I am in her phone as LADYTRON so there is more ROFFLE when we SMS each other.

People love Gravity and Ebullition! (ex machina), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Hstencil: But when I bait you, it's out of love.

Sorry, Casuistry. And you're a good example of how I'm a dirty liar. I call you Chris lots.

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Did you file The Pinefox under "T"?

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I always wondered how that worked at FAPs. "Hey, be sure to loop loop loop loop, you having another tetleys or what?"

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

oh freaking a, that was supposed to go on the other post. Nevermind.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark, I think that's why I change my name a lot? I don't mind being called "JW" though.

People love Gravity and Ebullition! (ex machina), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I get called luna a lot. And I call Sam Sam, and Tep Tep, but I think those are both (especially in Tep's case) RL nicknames anyway, and um, I think that's all.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I have used the handle "Casuistry" elsewhere and people from that setting called me "Casuistry" in real life (or more likely "Cas"), and it was fine. I didn't mind.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

ha Hstencil i thought it was just me getting these two threads mixed up!

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

In my mobile phone: Archel, Carsmile Steve and Steady Mike are the only ones listed by nickname. I would call Huck Huck if I met him, as I have no idea what his real name is, though by and large I do make an effort to find out (hstencil, oops, doomie, zemko etc.).

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Huck. (it sure beats Horace!) I think it sort of suits my online persona. Because I can't read and I don't wear shoes.

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I just call refer to everyone as cockfarmers, it simplifies things.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

to other people, yes.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Similarly, I just walk around telling everyone to eat a bag of dicks.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

and I follow about ten paces behind with an assortment of dick-bags for people to choose from.

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to eat Colin Farrell's dick, please.

(NOT REALLY SARAH)

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i refer to all my friends as their email addresses

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Some of the same ones that have been mentioned. I can't get out of the habit of calling Sam, Dr C, Jel and some others by those names. The oddest one is Steady Mike - I've never seen him called that online, but we all seem to call him that in person.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm dreading the inevitable day when mr teeny finds out his internet name.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

*waggles little finger*

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

cozen

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I simply assign all my friends a 7-digit code and refer to them by these handy, numerical, HIPPA-compliant monikers.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Except Ned. I call him "kuci.org"

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

[email protected]

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I only get "hey, you're phil-two", except the time tracer went "hey, you're spencer chow". but then they stop and just call me phil which is one less syllable and much easier.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Except Ned. I call him "kuci.org"

Rah!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay for internet handles that were actual nicknames before becoming internet handles!

nickalicious since 1997 (nickalicious), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

"Nickalicious" is so contagious. I've started referring to all people named Nick/Nicholas/Nicole as such.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I try and just call everyone dude to avoid names and such.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I often tend to refer to people by their internet names when talking about them, but not when talking to them. Which causes much confusion when I say things like "this is J*e" and my husband's like "who?" and I say "the pinefox" and he gets all confused. The two names are interchangeable in my head as a reference point for the same person, but I don't think I would ever call him "the pinefox" when talking to him. It would just sound silly.

The oddest one is Steady Mike

Aw, he's not that bad....

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

There are a lot of people from the knoxville board that I call by their wwwnames in real life. But only if I knew them on the board first, I guess.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I try and just call everyone dude to avoid names and such.

ha ha me too! It's also way less embarassing if you forget their name.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

And OMG roxy don't be stealing my -alicious! I like adding -tacular to people's names too. Emilytacular.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

No one has ever referred to me as Bingo. Thank god.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

One day, I will FAP with deangulberry and gear! w/o anyone revealing their christian names.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

and gear!'s roommate.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish people called me roxy in real life. People have started calling me "emsue" more and more lately. It's my name on the knox board.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

ha ha I never realized the implications of calling him "mr. teeny"!!!!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

[some thing] is thrown in with [some other thing]...and HILARITY EMSUES!!!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I still want to know whether I am under the letter T in DC's telephone.

the bellefox, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I think JtN is under the letter t in my phone.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Traitor Hand calls me rosemary half the time, it's cute.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, sometimes. It depends how their online handle sounds arsey or not. I get people calling me by whatever online handle I'm using, I guess cos it's easier to pronounce than my real name.

KM (No idea for a nickname), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i've had "Kingfish" or "J.D." as a nickname for over a decade or more, depending on who the person talking to me is.

also, i've done the "referring folks by their handle" thing since i started going on BBSes back in 1990 or so.
