Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

My personal favorite, which I saw at a mall in Lacey, WA about a month ago, is called:

BIG! LOTS!

And, no, I did not add the punctuation for emphasis.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

They have Big Lots everywhere. It's where you go to get cheap Halloweeen costumes.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Last time I was at Big Lots I bought a box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch obviously meant for some Middle Eastern market (as everything on it was written in Arabic). I didn't eat it though.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

why would a restaurant play up the fact that their food is made in a factory? (even if it isn't.) why would that be appealing to customers?

Burritos As Big As Your Head

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

One in Louisville, used to be one in Lexington.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Their burritos delivered on what they promised. They were big. They were also kinda shit.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

oops wrote: Near the Grand Canyon, there's a place---the only food place open past 8PM within 50 miles---with the name We Sell Pizza."

Close...it's actually called "We Cook Pizza and Pasta" - I'm not sure where I stand on this "complete sentence as restaurant name" thing.

nickalicious wrote: Last time I was at Big Lots I bought a box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch obviously meant for some Middle Eastern market (as everything on it was written in Arabic). I didn't eat it though.

WHEW. Food from Big Lots is a bit dubious, methinks. It is a good place to get weird, unpopular toys though. It is also the saddest retail store ever (not counting thrift stores).

Ernest P. (ernestp), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I got some Hebrew Trix there once.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

.it's actually called "We Cook Pizza and Pasta"

They must've upgraded! Now they sell pasta AND pizza AND cook it!

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

wait, they do sell it, don't they? The name isn't too clear on that.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

No. They only employ the barter system, unfortunately.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, I love Hobby Lobby, Jo-Ann Fabrics, Michael's (the arts & crafts people), and Tuesday Morning! I would love Home Depot too but their service is shit, so I love Lowe's instead.

I hate Big Lots, though. Every single one of the ones I've been in have this creepy aura to them, as if you're looking at things that were never meant to be sold to the public in a store space that was never meant to actually be a store. I prefer the Dollar Tree, which is well lit, organized, and filled with things I actually like looking at.

I used to have a REALLY BIG issue with the name La-Z-Boy when I was little. Imagine a little girl strapped into the back seat, looking out the car windows and groaning whenever we passed a La-Z-Boy retailer. "What, is that supposed to be a 'Lahz Boy'? How idiotic! Why don't they just spell out the whole name? It wouldn't be hard to do!"

why would a restaurant play up the fact that their food is made in a factory? (even if it isn't.) why would that be appealing to customers?

Nevertheless you do get a cool Simpsons joke:

-----
Hibbert: All right, where would you kids like to eat tonight?
Kid 1: The Spaghetti Laboratory!
Kid 2: Face Stuffers!
Kid 3: Professor P. J. Cornucopia's Fantastic Foodmagorium and Great
American Steakery!
Hibbert: [chuckles] Well, what about this place? [stops the car] "Moe's".
[inside, the usual crowd sit around at the bar]
[Hibbert opens the door]
Barney: Aah! Natural light! Get it off me...get it off me!
Hibbert: Oh, I'm sorry: I thought this was a family restaurant.
Moe: Oh, it is...it is. Just uh, uh, pull them stools up to the pool table.
Kid 2: Daddy, this place smells like tinkle.
Hibbert: Mm hmm. I think we'll just go to the Texas Cheesecake Depository.

Annapolis has "The Crabcake Factory", which brags of the biggest crabcake in town -- only they don't use blue crab meat, but nearly completely flavorless crab meat from Thailand. So you get a big chunk of chewy fried, which is apparrantly all some folks want.

Annapolis also has (had?) the record store Oceans II; there is no Oceans I. My mother thought the place was called "Oceans Eleven"; no, the owner explained -- "there's an ocean here, and another ocean over there, and we're between the Oceans Two." Ah, the 70s.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 24 June 2004 07:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Why the fuck would a place in Annapolis use crabs from Thailand?

Ruth's Chris Steak House. Who owns it? Ruth or Chris? Does Ruth make steaks from Chris? Why can't they pick one name! Gah!

Snappy Snaps

Piggly Wiggly (Actually I like that name...are those still around? or have they been swallowed by wal-mart?)

There was a Big Lots near my old house in Denver. I was too apprehensive to go in though.

sgs (sgs), Thursday, 24 June 2004 07:20 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a chain of video stores called Pic-A-Flick video. We always used to call it Pick-N-Flick Video.

Now that one of the Pic-A-Flicks near us is closed, it has been taken over by a flower shop who opted to retain the "Pic" part of the stores's title and are now called Pic-A-Flower.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 24 June 2004 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Ruth's Chris Steak House. Who owns it? Ruth or Chris? Does Ruth make steaks from Chris? Why can't they pick one name! Gah!

There was discussion about this on a local radio show but I can't remember what the deal with it was. I think Ruth bought Chris's steakhouse, but don't quote me on it.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 07:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Piggly Wiggly is still going strong. They used to be here locally, or at least that's what my mom tells me, until they, like every other national grocery store chain, departed the area. The power of H-E-B, baybee.

I too was once confused re: "Ruth's Chris Steak House" but then I suppose I got used to the name and stopped being confused. Eh.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 24 June 2004 07:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the grammar of it bothers me more than anything else. If Oops is correct, and the original name was Chris's steak house, you'd think it would be 'Ruth and Chris's steak house'! I suppose having 'and' in there was just too much for the new name. As it is I imagine Ruth making steaks out of some poor meaty shmuck named Chris.

I also hate the name Frugal Fannies. Oh how the Brits would laugh, etc.

(Dee, what's H-E-B? There were Piggly Wiggly stores in Texarkana until they were replaced with Albertson's. I always thought they were a southern thing since I never saw any anywhere else. I liked all the 'g's in the name.)
