Also, how can you tell?

We can't know, any more than we can know that the red of a strawberry or the sound of a middle C on a flute look/sound the same to someone else, or come to that the touch of a red hot poker feels the same. We can only assume it - and infer that it is a reasonable assumption from the similarity of brain impulses in similar areas invoked by these things.

So are you eleven years old, or high?

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Or both?

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm actually 30, but I was really into cough syrup last summer.

So, you probably get the idea.

Donkey Dick, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you Derek Erdman?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry: D3r3k Erdm@n.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Shit man, I dunno.

Donkey Dick, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

If so, I own one of yr paintings.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Which one? Is it any good?

Donkey Dick, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

It's of a tooth. With a red background. I like it a lot; that's why I bought it.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

(I found it at the WLUW Record Fair last summer.)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, thanks a lot! Also, did I write anything snappy on the back?

I bought some choice records at that fair including SSD's "The Kids Will Have Their Say" for $7!

Donkey Dick, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Nothing snappy on the back, no.

And you're welcome!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, you sure as hell can know if people perceive things the same way. It's expensive as shit and involves a lot of intense tests, but it is doable.

Girolamo Savonarola, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Not only do different things taste the same to different people, but they all taste like to chicken, if reports are to be believed.

Aimless (Aimless), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

but like when you ssee the color green how do you really know its green? you know?

artdamages (artdamages), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Well...

Girolamo Savonarola, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you'll need to explain how we can be sure any two people experience the same taste, Girolamo - since we are talking about sensory impressions, necessarily privileged, I don't see how we can do more than make the inference I mentioned, from the similarity of the impulses in the same parts of the brain - but that is far from settling it.

If you're Der3k 3rdman, than I think you emailed me about a band ad I posted on craigslist and I looked at your website and then I didn't email you back because your website was too intimidatingly cool. I am a jerk.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Thursday, 24 June 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

how many tastes are there?

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)
