Meanwhile, in the Sudan: mass murder, enslavement, rape, pillaging of homes, and everything involved with a situation approaching genocide is taking place. Nicholas Kristof, at the NY Times, has been putting out some very informative pieces on this.

In my limited knowledge of the situation, it's basically ethnic cleansing 101. Arabic militias, being at the very least tolerated by an Arabic government, are killing Africans, both Christian and Muslim.

30,000 people have died
1 million at risk of dying from disease and starvation if the Khartoum government doesn't allow for aid to enter the country
World leader who attempted (and failed) to broker peace in Sudan in May: George W. Bush
Country proposing the largest amount of aid to Sudan: America
Among the UN members who opposed a harshly criticized statement against the Khartoum government: China and France
Countries with their hands deep in Sudanese oil: China and France

Neither the U.S. or U.N deserve heavenly praise for getting involved so late. (I just couldn't resist pointing out some issues that might run counter to 'omg America = Great Satan') But for those who scoff at the idea the world needs a policeman, I think these are the situations when it actually does. Hopefully, Powell and Jack Danforth and the UN will be able to slow/stop the violence.

This situation has been ongoing since Sudan gained independence in 1956. It is disgusting that this has gotten so little attention.

I don't know where you got the number of 30K dead. In the last 20 years an estimated two million have died due to this war.
