Arrogant/charming?

witty/boring?

serious/frivolous?

wimbeldon being on: i'm big in favour of him...

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Monday, 28 June 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I like him. I loved him when he was playing. He had a sublime touch even though he looked so awkward, especially when serving.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Monday, 28 June 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

my favourite sports commentator, although i'm more into football than tennis, so my exposure to him is not so frequent.

(i assume the question is more in reference to his broadcasting skills, than his career as a player?)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 28 June 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

well, for me yes, although i'm happy for people to talk about his playing and also make swingeing attacks on his personality for no good reason...

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Monday, 28 June 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I too love his play-by-play. Even his annyoying behaviour of the past looks kinda cute and goofy now. This may have something to do with most tennis pros today being soulless robots with the personality of a block of wood.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 28 June 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

He was amazing in his day. I should say that too. He's a loveable asshole.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 28 June 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i dunno, i expected him to be more entertaining as a commentator than he turned out to be. as a player, cant fault him.

i was at wimbledon the other day and saw Boris Becker and Jimmy Hill on the grounds. twas quite exciting!

may, Monday, 28 June 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

it's kind of annoying how completely in love with Henin-Hardenne he is...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 28 June 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd loathed him at his peak partly because he'd eclipsed (and helped push into retirement) my absolute hero Borg and partly due to the abhorrent behaviour which even Richard Evans' Rage For Perfection couldn't convince me was anything other than fairly calculated bouts of obnoxiousness. Oh, we can laugh about now, etc.

I didn't want him to lose every match like I did Becker and, later on, following his '86 sabbatical I warmed to him and started to relish his extended runs at the Slams (though he was never again to reach a final). Finally I appreciated the genius. I can watch the '80 Wimbledon final now with the same goose-pimply wonder a Liverpool fan probably can a DVD of that UEFA final vs Alaves - but live it was a million torments.

That the two people who put me through so much misery as a tennis fan should be the two I most look forward to hearing as broadcasters is kinda funny; Becker's appeal is chiefly his buffoonishness. "Hey, is that Lou Reed?"

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 28 June 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

it's kind of annoying how completely in love with Henin-Hardenne he is...

...and also that, despite his love for her, he has never even once attempted to pronounce her name correctly.

Classic for being such an entertaining motormouth in the commentary box. Dud for when 'comedy rambling' turns into 'ill-informed bullshit' esp. when he starts slagging the women's game off, or starts accusing Karolina Sprem of cheating.

I was too young to watch him play.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 28 June 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I like his air of sending himself up, even if that's not his intention. However the extension of this into a sub-Anne-Robinson gameshow host career = k-dud.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 28 June 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

He's a really, really bad game show host. But I like him as a commentator and as an iconoclast.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 28 June 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

The Chair!! I had already forgotten about The Chair.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 28 June 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Thankfully so have the BBC.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 28 June 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not ashamed to say i still play with some bad habits i learned trying to immitate his style. not the serve, though. too back-breaking. and the max 200G is the greatest racket ever made.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Monday, 28 June 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic overall, but dud for overuse of THAT catchphrase.

Crackity (Crackity Jones), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I take it that you are, in fact, serious about that.

oops (Oops), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

he's extremely sexy now, much more laid back.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

smooth criminal

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic as a player, obviously. But maybe even more classic as a broadcaster, because there have been more great tennis players in the last 25 years than great sports announcers. I think he's one of the best in any sport -- he knows his stuff, he's opinionated enough to keep it interesting, he keeps the fluffy bullshit to a minimum, and his obvious respect and love of the game don't get in the way of still being something of a smart-ass.

spittle (spittle), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

He's pretty pish with a script, though.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

2/16: my birthday, and his.

g--ff (gcannon), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 05:02 (twenty-one years ago)

He's worth his weight in gold as a tennis commentator.

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 05:03 (twenty-one years ago)

He and Julian Schnabel play tennis together now.

Star Hustler, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 05:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to like him, but he fucked that up by constantly talking about how there is no chance of Ivanisevic winning the wimbledon title. WRONG!

And he also has a rock band or something, that has to be dud.

Pingu, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 06:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't Goran out of the tournament already?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 06:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Not just the tournament.

spittle (spittle), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 06:55 (twenty-one years ago)

it's kind of annoying how completely in love with Henin-Hardenne he is...

OMG there is nothing wrong with being in love with henin-hardenne.

except she's married i guess. to someone whose last name sounds like hard-on. haha i guess i can't pronounce it either.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 07:05 (twenty-one years ago)

One of my bosses at work beat Mr. Hardenne in a match last year. But he admits Justine would most likely kick his ass.

spittle (spittle), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 07:14 (twenty-one years ago)

As player, classic of course.
As a broadcaster, also classic. Becker as a commentator is painful. Thankfully he doesn't talk too much, but when he does he always comes across as really pompous and never offers much helpful insight. (OK, McEnroe is pompous too, but Becker probably comes across worse to me because of his accent).

But the highlight of Johnny Mac's career HAS to be his all-night party scene with Adam Sandler in Mr. Deeds!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 08:32 (twenty-one years ago)

What are people making of Mad Mickey Stich's commentary skills, btw?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

My Lendl thread should get as much love!

Aaron A., Tuesday, 29 June 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

(I've revived it!)

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

starts accusing Karolina Sprem of cheating

He didn't accuse her of cheating, he actually said that of all the people involved she was most blameless. He is classic, was classic as a player and is tremendously watchable as a broadcaster.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

(OK, 'revived' was a bit strong. 'Tickled the corpse', more like.)

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

is tennis now so dull that Goran Ivanesevich can now be referred to as "one of tennis's great showmen'?

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i still hit with my 200G, but i finally upgraded my gear for the first time since the 90s. dunlop biomimetic 100. love it.

andrew m., Friday, 1 March 2013 22:25 (thirteen years ago)

five years pass...

Borg vs McEnroe does pretty well with their epic 1980 Wimbledon final (which I don't remember; it was my first year of university, and I'd stopped paying attention to things I should have been paying attention to), but for the first 80 minutes, it's like somebody told the director he'd be remaking Diary of a Country Priest. Bjorn Borg couldn't have possibly been this grim or uninteresting in real life. Even Shia LaBeouf as McEnroe is unnecessarily grim. The only actor who seems to be enjoying himself (and who therefore catches something about the era) is Robert Emms as Vitas Gerulaitis--he's practically Jeff Spicoli in the midst of all this hand-wringing. (I think I grew up thinking Gerulaitis was Spanish or something.)
