IMO compassion spontaneously arises when we get out of the way. Everything else is transient noise.
I try to let compassion drive everything I do.

I was thinking almost the same question as the OP - after having a frustrating day practically ending up bitching by e-mail at remote workers who weren't delivering what was urgently needed (quite simple information that should be readily available.
On casual investigation, it seems that one is possibly an alcoholic and the other perhaps has comprehension issues.
The remoteness by e-mail made it easy to take a hard approach at first - but it feels wrong now. If I did this everyday I think it would harden me into a different person.

It sure as shit ain't easy--we don't want to get out of the way--but in my experience it's absolutely the truth.

I mean yeah I've been known to pull over and give blind dudes rides to homeless shelters and give the contents of my lunchbox to pregnant panhandlers or whatever, but I'm not so much interested in "instances in which I feel I've been compassionate." I just try to still myself and act. Priest I know might say that if I'm acting at all then there's no compassion involved: I'm acting out of self-aggrandizement no matter how altruistic I might appear. The thing to realize is that there's no one for me to be compassionate towards, there's just compassion expressing itself.
