I have not had soda in a month and I never will again

I had this root canal a couple of years ago and I slowed down on the soda consumption after that, figuring that soda just ain't good for the teeth. Then I started drinking water whenever I got fast food, which cut down on the price. Then I mostly stopped having fast food except for the occasional In N Out Burger. And about a month ago I decided to not have soda and see how long I could last, figuring it might be tough. Not at all. So yep, I think I've had my last soda.

No candy either. And I've stopped putting sugar in my coffee. I actually feel a lot more relaxed and healthy and focused all the time.

What about coffee?

Scott CE (Scott CE), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 18:24 (twenty years ago) link

well I still have the coffee, but maybe a couple times a week in the morning. When I "go out for coffee" I have chai with soy. I'm really turning into a big softy, soon I'll eat nothing but tofu, pine needles, and air.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 18:25 (twenty years ago) link

I actually feel a lot more relaxed and healthy and focused all the time.

Seriously? But you still drink coffee, right? Because I have trouble concentrating, but I drink a couple of sodas and four or five cups of coffee a day. So maybe that's why.

I rarely drink soda, so when I do it's a nice little tasty treat. Outta sight, outta mind for me. It really saves money, esp if you eat fast food much. That's what they make the most profit on.

It's true that when you're not used to drinking it any more it has this way of making your mouth feel dried out. Um, that goes for me anyway.

My freshman year of high school I lived out in the middle of NOWHERE, Virginia. We won a radio contest and CeCe Peniston came to sing at our school, along with someone even lesser known that I can't remember. And I got her autograph. (Wait, anthony, is that your screen name all the time now??)

I think the hardest is not drinking soda when you have junk food (especially popcorn or french fries) because you need the soda to help break it down or counteract the salt or something.

x-post. Awesome.

i quit soda 7 years ago around the same time that i quit working at a movie theater--where the only free stuff we could have was soda and popcorn....now i'm not big on either. if i drink soda (which only happens like 3 or 4 times a year), i usually go for the stuff that's sweetened with cane sugar, instead of high fructose corn syrup. it doesn't make me feel as crappy.

I don't really care for soda at all. I drink it if it's available at some party, and maybe occasionally at a restaurant/bar, but that's about it. It must be years since I last bought soda to drink at home.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 29 April 2009 19:20 (fifteen years ago) link

If I am in a dour place Coca-Cola classic cheers me up faster than anything. Alcohol can exacerbate a bad mood and naturally marijuana is the height of all folly for me to approach when depressioed, BUT cola is a big, friendly hug. I think it is the sugar + carbonation + taste + caffiene + some placebo/classical conditioning thing.

(I also like vanilla Coke for the sads.)

However, I kinda think I trink too much orange juice, so I've been trying to cut that down. Even though it's non-sugared, 100% whole juice, there's still sugar in it and I do think the acids in it must be bad for my teeth too.

I used to drink massive amounts of soda. At the peak of my consumption, I would drink at least one 64oz Dr Pepper from the corner 7-11 a day. I started getting crazy stomach aches and thought I was getting an ulcer from stress. I didn't have any medical insurance, so I just dealt with it for 2 years or so. Eventually I stopped drinking beer, and then later soda, and it went away and hasn't been back since. I still drink the occasional small 7-up or Coke with certain types of food, but for the most part the stuff just seems too sweet for me now. I drink a lot of water and Honest Tea, and sometimes Paul Newman lemonade when I feel like something sweet. At one time, I never thought I'd be able to quit drinking soda, but now I don't miss it at all.

Yeah, it's about sugar consumption, really. I stay away from sugar in general, and therefore, sodas really seem too sweet. If I'm gonna have sugar every once awhile, I prefer a piece of chocolate or maybe baklava or some nice dessert than to waste it all in what amounts to sugary water. Sugar is kindof like cigarettes, imo - once you've stayed away from it long enough to beat the addiction, it doesn't seem nearly as appealing as it once did.
