Sadly it's not quite what the trainspotters are after and so there's lots of bitching and whining in the horror community which - to be fair - is kinda understandable as it's a bit of a half arsed effort.

I grew up with the Friday films. When I was 10 they were the coolest because they had gore and tits and Jason was a bad mother. So I'm pretty nostalgic towards them. I'd like the extra disc in this set, so I might sell off the single disc releases I already have.

No one?

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Commentary on only four of the movies? That does seem pretty half-assed given that this isn't exactly something that needed to be rushed -- you'd think they would've had a track for Jason In Space if nothing else, just because it was so recent.

I would feel bad about myself if I bought this before finally replacing the Nightmare set. But it's a good price.

"horror community"

The Jason in Space film (Jason X, and also 1993's Jason Goes to Hell) are owned by New Line. Sean Cunningham bought the rights back after 1989's Part 8: Jason Takes Manhatten (Paramount produced the first 8 titles). Special editions of Part 9 and 10 are out on Region 1 (Jason X is out on Reg. 2 as well) with commentary tracks.

It's a shame that we are not getting uncut versions of the films (note that Part 1 is uncut on DVD everywhere but America and Canada) but that extras disc should be a nostalgic rush. But where is Kevin Bacon?

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh hrm, it stops at Manhattan? It's still a good price, but it's a shame they couldn't work that out. I was surprised at how much I liked Jason X -- other than the first two and Manhattan, it's the only one I tend to watch "on purpose," instead of just flipping to them when I notice they're on cable.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

The films in some ways stop at Manhatten too. That's the end of the Friday movies ala Paramount and they take a totally different turn as of Jason Goes to Hell (which is a sci-fi Hidden rip off) and then Jason X (a sci fi Alien rip off). The New Line films are better though.

I like the first the best, and the second one is a not bad spin off on Twitch of the Death Nerve. I think Part 5 has the more blood and nudity and it has no plot.

I am very excited about this. If it is, in fact, around $60, that seems like a pretty good deal.
The extras are pretty similar to the similarly skimpy Nightmare box, if not better.
I will feel weird without the last 2 in there, though. I hate that I don't have the Twin Peaks pilot but I have the box set of season 1, you know?

Jason X is probably the greatest Canadian film ever made.

Porky's is much better than Jason X.

Where's the Friday the 13th: The Series boxset?!??!?!?!?!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh God that was poor.

P.S. Here's an exlcusive. They're doing a new one called "Crystal Lake Chronicles" and it will be a New Line/ Crystal Lake Productions series that evolves around Jason and Crystal Lake.

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Weird -- they are also developing a "Nightmare on Elm Street" themed reality show as well.

two years pass...
Does anyone have this? I can't decide whether to buy it; I've seen and loved Friday the 13th and Jason Takes Manhattan. I own Jason X (it was only 50 cents more than renting it, so I figured I might as well), and I also liked it, though not as much as the aforementioned two. So, do the others hold up to Parts 1 and 8?

I am Jason X

god these are horrible movies

twelve years pass...

Time for my daily dose of challops!

While they're both probably objectively terrible, I'd like to state for the record that Friday the 13th: The Series >>> Friday the 13th (the series of films). I've been kicking back about an episode a night, and they're just such dopey, cheesy fun. And one of the episodes was directed by Cronenberg. The films can't make such a lofty boast.

There was a two-episode arc about a cursed quilt. I mean...come on. That's magnificent.

Puzzled by actors who try setting themselves apart with a single name. Usually '80s b-movie starlets. Or Fabio. Robey on the series' credits, I wondered at her reasoning.

I think she was trying to kick-start a side gig as a pop singer. One of her songs popped up in an episode I just watched. I'd say it was about as solid as her acting, aaaaaand I'll leave it at that.

oh god i've always wanted to watch the series

Here's a sampler for you, an episode which I might lovingly dub 'the The Room of '80s horror television/Miami Vice mash-ups':

I think I've finally come to the conclusion that, on the one hand, there are bad things where no one involved in their creation cares or tries or is at all invested and that are just a palpable drag for anyone else trying to engage with those things, and, on the other hand, there are things where everyone involved ignores the fact that they maybe aren't up to the task at hand and they go-all in and have fun with it and even though the resulting product is inarguably bad it's also just a lot of fun if you can get on the right wavelength. This show most definitely fits into the latter category of bad things.

That's a decent way of putting it. The Berlanti DC umbrella, the "all-in and having fun" is how I've been feeling about Legends of Tomorrow. Last season's finale, with the giant Beebo facing the demon god, I thought was brilliant.

same thing is true for the Robocop

The CW DC shows are well-crafted puff pastries, with lots of professional effort invested in making tasty that passes straight through you. It's undeniably junk but not quite what I'd call 'bad' (feel like I need to plot these points on a coordinate plane). Friday the 13th is like the first production of a newly-formed community theatre comprised entirely of gung-ho amateurs. Every. Single. Episode.

'making SOMETHING tasty' rather
