62 K? is that all you got?

What's the smallest image on the web with the greatest amount of Kb? Gif's shouldn't count.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

pixels.

and that was tiny

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, that is somewhat unfair. it is not tiny, but i don't think it belongs on this thread, it isn't big enough, 1330x954 isnt really enough

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

If only there was a place where I could find a thermal arial map of Tokyo....

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I could post a smartass 1k .jpg that'd crash your browser - it's a script kiddie/hacker thing - but I won't.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Thursday, 1 July 2004 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I work with files in the 50MB+ range all the time. They would probably not be online tho.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 1 July 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember there was this image going around that was like 2k, but it had some honkiness in it that made it so huge that it'd usually take over your computer and break your RAM-chips into crumbs.
Ruled.

I've stumbled upon a few 100meg+ images online a few times.
I think NASA's website has some huge ones too.

Øystein H-O (Øystein H-O), Thursday, 1 July 2004 04:06 (twenty-one years ago)

well. i had a think about this last night, about what to do about people posting huge images and how to stop them:

a) a css stylesheet entry for img with height and width defined will override anything in the image tag but i couldn't see a way of preserving aspect ratio.

b) the php function getimagesize() will return the size of an image and it's not too much work to then limit the image to a maximum height and/or width. someone could add this to the code for the image linking (they may also need to disallow use of the img tag to stop people bypassing the check) (this may not work with gifs as gif support is often removed from php due to licensing problems)

i did once print out an image of me stood on a rock in Joshua Tree on an a0 printer, that was quite large. 8)

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 1 July 2004 07:24 (twenty-one years ago)

koogs- maybe you should post that on the moderation board, there is a discussion on the image 'problem' that is going on right now.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 1 July 2004 07:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i know not of the moderation board. oh, found it.

looks like andrew's already on the case. cheers julio.

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 1 July 2004 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah koogs, I didn't notice that gif support had been withdrawn. Oh well, such is life.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 1 July 2004 08:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i think it's one of those things that you can compile in afterwards (at you own risk) but is no longer distributed with the main php code. see imagegif page of php docs.

php -i | grep -i gif

(there's an easier way to do this i think - ah, imagetypes(). mine says 'Gif *Read* support enabled' which may be all you need. and, thinking about it, you wouldn't need the lzw(?) stuff to get the image size as it's just in the file header)
