I was led to believe they hibernate during winter, but a colleague just told me penguins don't hibernate. Now I don't know what to think.

They don't. There's no place to on the Big Ice.

Thaaaaaaaanks.

The female Emperor pengies, during winter, I believe, goes out to sea and gorges on food whilst their mates remain in the colony, resting on their fat stores, to keep their eggs warm.

Wow, you know heaps about emperor penguins.

How about Chimney Swifts?

The male emperors balance the eggs on the tops of their feet and shuffle around continuously so they all take turns being on the outside exposed bit and in the warm centre bit of the colony. When the females come back they recognise each other's calls out of tens of thousands and after months apart. At least that's what David Attenborough said.

"Penguins" - Susan Carlson

Penguins are so short and fat,
that where ever you are you know where they're at,
and when they get angry at you they'll batter your chins,
with their superdi duperdi super strong fins.

I would have added a few exclamation points in there, but that pretty much says it all, don't it?

"superdi duperdi?"

martin m. (mushrush), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

But, I took Latin...

There have been accounts of male penguins courting each other, going so far as to balance an egg-sized and -shaped rock on their feet.

Picard Maneuver (Leee), Thursday, 1 July 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Fair enough. I'd be pretty turned on by a hot lass with a granite baby strapped to her legs.

Picard Maneuver (Leee), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

and when they get angry at you they'll batter your chins

What's the secret? I can either loft or skip the little fella, but I always come up with something around 500. How does one reach the lofty height of 1378?

Evanston Wade (EWW), Thursday, 1 July 2004 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)
