football tix: how to buy them from overseas

I live in California and will be in Spain and France this fall. One thing I'd love to do is see a match in either country. My wife and I will be in Marbella from Sept 25-Oct 2 and figured we might be able to see Malaga play or maybe Seville. We'll also be visiting a friend in Nice and thought we might see them play or Monaco or something like that.

Please help me figure out where to find schedules for these leagues and how to purchase advance tix. Also, would it be difficult to see Juventus play if we were to make a day trip to Turin from Nice? Is that a long trip??

I need lots of help, thanks.

you should try see a depotivo la coruna match if you can

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 1 July 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

do they play anywhere near where i'll be in marbella? looking at the map it seems like malaga and seville are the two closest clubs.

metfigga (metfigga), Thursday, 1 July 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

these look like the sort of chaps to visit:
http://www.soccer-spain.com/

it says the spanish fixtures for 04/05 aren't out until mid-july. if it's anything like when we went to bilbao we just bought (decent) tickets from the stadium the day before...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 1 July 2004 09:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I was going to say, yes, unless a big team are in town (basically Barca or Real madrid) or there's a local derbi (ie Sevilla vs Betis) you sghould be able to rock up on the day or day before and get tickets no problem. In Seville you have a choice of going to see Sevilla or Betis (I think G got a ticket for that derbi on the day actually) and in Malaga there's just Malaga.

soccer-spain is a very good webiste though. very useful.

chris (chris), Thursday, 1 July 2004 09:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Even big games, you should be able to get them outside. i have friends who have seen Milan derbies that way. It is pretty easy, and that way you won't get scammed by a tour operator (who nearly always cost the earth).

a very good point yes, never go on a package, the mark-up is horrendous

chris (chris), Thursday, 1 July 2004 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

The only Italian match I haven't been able to get tickets on the day for was the European Championship semi final btw. Inter and Man Utd. You might have to sit way at the back/top of the stadium if it's a big game though, so getting them in advance might be an idea. Bizarrely, banks sell tickets - it's Cariplo for Inter and also Milan I think, but that's a Lombardy bank so you might need to try whatever the local bank is in Turin.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 1 July 2004 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

same for Bilbao too, and Barca iirc

chris (chris), Thursday, 1 July 2004 09:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The Italian clubs you want to see will almost certainly have a list (on their websites?) of approved ticket sellers, which can be banks, tobacconists, cafes and various other places. I had to help a friend with this for a Lecce match and there were dozens of places to buy tickets. The tickets are releaseed only a few days before the match, so it's unlikely to be possible to buy them a long time in advance.

Malaga FC have a large ex-pat following on the Costa del Sol. Just ask around at the tourist bars and you'll find out how to get tickets.

Note, there's very little trouble at Spanish games, so you'll have to start your own.

oh god, I'm going to Venice aren't I? get in Catenaccio here I come. Must find a travel pillow.

chris (chris), Thursday, 1 July 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

When are you going to Venice, baby genitals?

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 1 July 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

sometime in September, hermaephro-man

chris (chris), Thursday, 1 July 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I shall be in Tuscany in September, greasy balls. Let's meet for football going.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 1 July 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

sure thing Rubble-arse

chris (chris), Thursday, 1 July 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

where has this ridiculous name-calling come from, you krazy kids?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 1 July 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Leave it, shrivelled pipe

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 1 July 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris, are you going to see AC Venezia? Their stadium is actually in Venice, albeit right at one end. They avoided relegation to Serie C1 in a play-off at the end of last season, cor.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 1 July 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember when they were in Serie A a few years back. The camera would pan out of the stadium and over to St Mark's Square.

They had Recoba too. He was so brilliant that season. Just brilliant.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 1 July 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess if they're playing at home the weekend we're there it would be rude not to go see them

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 1 July 2004 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

*very* rude

chris (chris), Thursday, 1 July 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

If you can get there, the streets are always flooded around the ground.

du-dum.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 1 July 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I still have a few football stickers of Venezia from the 96-97 season. They had the ugliest players.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 1 July 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

If Venezia are away, Vicenza are about 1 hour away on the train.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 1 July 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to see Notts County vs Chester on 7th august*, do you think we'll need to book ahead?

*am at stag do in nottingham

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 1 July 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

if it's first game of the season then possibly, otherwise no, and please boo Glynn Hurst at every opportunity.

chris (chris), Thursday, 1 July 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Definitely. Notts County is always a sell out. Nice ground in the "shitty and old" style though.

___ (___), Thursday, 1 July 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

gosh, i thought i was being sarcastic...

yes, it is the first match of the season, i'm so used to walking up to lower division grounds i didn't think it'd be a problem...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 1 July 2004 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

you bastard, that's my birthday. humph.

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 1 July 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought it was second game of the season, or are non prem leagues starting the same day as the big boys this year?

I didn't think the dodgy gits sold out every match?

chris (chris), Thursday, 1 July 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

oh god i'm a bastard...

according to the bbc fixture list it's the first of the season, the conf isn't starting til the week after...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 1 July 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks for all of your help. that soccer-spain site is a great resource. now i've just got to hope that either malaga or seville are playing at home while i'm there.

anybody happen to know anything about nice and their status? will they be playing in ligue 1 this season?

and, do you have suggestions for a site that offers good information on all the european leagues?

metfigga (metfigga), Thursday, 1 July 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice finished decidedly mid-table so they'll be in Ligue 1, yes.

The BBc isn't bad but it doesn't have league standings, just results.

I can't remember the name of the site I used to use, annoyingl;y, but Eurosport may be good.

There's also a rough guide to European football book available which may be useful to you

chris (chris), Friday, 2 July 2004 07:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Soccerage is useful too, although I think it is moving soon (Goal.com?) it tells you on Soccerage anyway.
