Nope, this is at the Egyptian.

Wednesday, July 28 – 7:30 PM

"Can’t Stop The Musical……Shorts!"

Thea (Thea), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 19:08 (twenty years ago) link

My dear Thea, the link is there. Dare you click it? ;-)

(I like how if you scroll down that link they're showing the 1973 musical version of Lost Horizon on Tuesday and that the screenwriter was in fact Larry Kramer. Yes, THAT Larry Kramer.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 19:09 (twenty years ago) link

If there is a pre-movies thing, I'd be pleased as scotch to meet some of you all.

Lukas (lukas), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 19:19 (twenty years ago) link

Cool! Well this is all tentative so far, but certainly I think there's room for some sort of meetup beforehand in the neck of the woods, at least.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 19:23 (twenty years ago) link

There's also a pretty neat french-pop club that night in Hollywood: http://www.clubparavion.com/jedansedoncjesuis.html

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 19:23 (twenty years ago) link

Hey, that could be fun -- would definitely bring Arthur out, though isn't Al Green also supposed to be performing that evening?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 19:24 (twenty years ago) link

im there yo

Sir Chaki McBeer III (chaki), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 20:10 (twenty years ago) link

Rock. All suggestions of a place for food and drinks beforehand (or after?) welcomed. I'm guessing all I have to do is my usual 'train up and over on the Red Line to Hollywood/Highland' approach -- Elvis T. said he'd be up for it as well.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 20:20 (twenty years ago) link

I've been wanting to make a special trip out for this, but this weekend's not going to be possible. Have fun, and have the full report on my desk on Monday.

Maneating Leopards of India (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 20:24 (twenty years ago) link

I am super bummed I will be out of town for my girlfriend's birthday, as I would love to meet all of you. But have fun, and please wear your BIM marks prominently.

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 21:41 (twenty years ago) link

Bah, tell her that watching these films make a REAL party. ;-) (We will toast your absence, but NEXT time -- which will likely be the weekend of the 20th-22nd, as that's when Jeremy will have moved into town.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 21:45 (twenty years ago) link

it's right outside my place, and i wanna come, but it depends on the $ situation, and um, a possible-date situation as well (which would consist of $-less activities, i reckon). i do suggest the Snow White Cafe for pre-FAP drinks though, right across Hollywood Blvd at McCadden Place. it has a very chill vibe, is ideal for tourist-gawking, and nice chicken sandwiches too!

V!c (Vic), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 06:59 (twenty years ago) link

Sounds good to me! Info on cafe here for those who need it. Any objections or is that good for everyone else?

Here's my thought -- due to the train schedules, I'll be up in Hollywood probably around 4 pm or so, will kill a bit of time at Amoeba, then will head over to the theater to pick up tickets at 5 pm. Elvis T and I were planning on meeting over there around then, then we'll head to the cafe [or wherever else is chosen] then.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:22 (twenty years ago) link

hooray okay!
do they serve alcohol there though? i have new-found drinking problem. but only with expensive girl-drinks.

lolita corpus (lolitacorpus), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:36 (twenty years ago) link

Well, Vic sez it's good for drinks, but I will let the man say more.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:38 (twenty years ago) link

I will be in Santa Barbara.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:45 (twenty years ago) link

I will be shaking my booty to Al Green and Tower of Power.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:47 (twenty years ago) link

Is that the full bill? Nice! I had heard about Al but not that. Well, if y'all can make the Cafe earlier that can still work!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:53 (twenty years ago) link

Cool, I'll be at the Cafe around 5:30. I'll just wander in and stand around looking lost if that works for everyone.

Lukas (lukas), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 18:03 (twenty years ago) link

ok well im dressing up like the indian

Sir Chaki McBeer III (chaki), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 19:17 (twenty years ago) link

FUCK YEAH

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 19:19 (twenty years ago) link

awww, if i could go i would totally be leatherman.

Maneating Leopards of India (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 21:00 (twenty years ago) link

"I'm from DA BRONX..."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 21:09 (twenty years ago) link

as it starts at 7:30 isn't 5:30 a tad early? not that it matters to me cause i could get there anytime if i do indeed get there (i'll get here before you lukas and as i really _am_ in some defintion a deviant Indian and DON'T have to dress up as one it might be EZ 4 U 2 recognize me) ...and i'm not saying it's like great for drinks or anything, in fact i've only been there once, but it had a nice chill vibe for a cute little corner of the boulevard, and also i deemed it recommendation-worthy 'coz parking is such a bitch around here, that i thought the pre-FAP might as well be somewhere close enough to ze theatre. i'm open to whatever (if i make it!) if you guys have other suggestions?

either case, for the Egyptian i highly suggest enduring the traffic and parking at the hollywood & highland underground structure thing (enter on orange, i believe) since they VALIDATE and it's only about $2. unless you totally luck out and find street parking on las palmas or whatever, but on a sat night that's about as likely as rain. plus, it's fun to walk past garish faux-babylonian "architecture"

Vic (Vic), Thursday, 29 July 2004 03:19 (twenty years ago) link

isn't 5:30 a tad early?

Perhaps a touch -- partially I'm operating on Elvis T.'s advice that screenings can either sell out or fill up really quickly, and so it's good to be at the theater some time before it all starts (I note there's also going to be some sort of costume contest and the like, so this is why Chaki must win and why pictures must be taken). If someone does want to suggest somewhere other than the Cafe that's nearby, by all means (and if it doesn't have much in the way of proper drinks beforehand, that could well be a deciding factor)! Good parking tips as well for those taking a car over, and if you're definitely in for the film, buy tickets pre-cafe (or whatever).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 July 2004 03:31 (twenty years ago) link

oh the Snow White does have enough drinks...but yeah i forgot about the sell out thing, and for this it's a legit fear:

and so, _if_ i make it (which seems likely as of now) and _if_ the er, $ issue is partially solved by sat (up in the air as of now) --->

- i totally-enthusiastically volunteer to get tix for anyone in advance, like sat daytime, and hold them for you. and you can pay me back! let me know, k? seriously it's vey close to me - if only the servants weren't away this weekend ::makes dismissive, exasperated gesture with hands i'd have the pre-FAP at my own little "weekend lounge" (har har m'ah studio) but i'm out of drinks, i fear (unless you like Brita!!).

Vic (Vic), Thursday, 29 July 2004 03:41 (twenty years ago) link

Heheh. Well, maybe I'll swing by the theater first, go over to Amoeba to kill time, then wander back...hm. Will ponder all this, stuff will unfold as it does.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 July 2004 03:58 (twenty years ago) link

Ameoba is D-D-DANGEROUS for if the $ issue IS resolved as soon as i walk in there i'll automatically, robot-like march over to get the two albums i've been s0000 _waiting_ to since, well... SO long (ie, 2 weeks) and that would be good...but bad! Okay thx for decidin for me, but i'm stayin 'round the SWC- see whoever there from 5:1? onwards! Call the cell if ya got it / need to. =)

Vic (Vic), Thursday, 29 July 2004 04:17 (twenty years ago) link

It is a plan. And I don't blame you for avoiding the money trap. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:47 (twenty years ago) link

I will try to make it. Also, I'll probably be at that Club Par Avion thing later which I think ilxors would like.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 30 July 2004 23:33 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, that sounds pretty cool, wish I could stick around for it!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 July 2004 23:40 (twenty years ago) link

Have fun. BIM FOREVER.

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Saturday, 31 July 2004 00:00 (twenty years ago) link

id like to meet you there afterwards, spencer

Sir Chaki McBeer III (chaki), Saturday, 31 July 2004 05:37 (twenty years ago) link

Sir Chaki McBeer III (chaki), Saturday, 31 July 2004 16:19 (twenty years ago) link

friend is telling me they dont have drinks there! i suggest pig n whistle if they dont!

Sir Chaki McBeer III (chaki), Saturday, 31 July 2004 16:19 (twenty years ago) link

I asked Vic about this earlier this morning and he said it's definitely a bar/watering hole! But I will ask him again later this afternoon and post final word before I head out -- Pig and Whistle, if it's nearby, sounds like a fine backup.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 31 July 2004 16:43 (twenty years ago) link

Just talked to Vic and he says yes, he's had drinks there. A good sign! About to leave, see everyone in a few hours.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 31 July 2004 19:03 (twenty years ago) link

I'm going to swing by early and hang out for a bit (but not for the movie). Later on, I'll probably check out the club.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 31 July 2004 20:39 (twenty years ago) link

Heading over now - hope I haven't missed everyone.

Lukas (lukas), Saturday, 31 July 2004 23:30 (twenty years ago) link

the apple was the most amazing thing ive ever seen

Sir Chaki McBeer III (chaki), Sunday, 1 August 2004 06:47 (twenty years ago) link

"THE APPLE!"

Dear heavens, what glory. More tomorrow.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 1 August 2004 06:47 (twenty years ago) link

Even the second time watching it was enough to induce brain trauma. Ned, Chaki, and Vic appeared to be in perpetual core dump.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Sunday, 1 August 2004 07:18 (twenty years ago) link

That is accurate. Some very brief thoughts at the end of the thread here.

But as for the FAP itself, great to meet Lukas for a drink and a bit of chat, and as always seeing Spencer was very cool! Along with Elvis T., Vic and I that made up the actual Snow White Cafe FAP, sorry nobody else could make it there!

Chaki and his coworker Julie met up with Elvis, Vic and I at the theater, and we commandeered the front row of the balcony and had a blast. Also, special secret extra guest! -- I was wandering through the lobby when someone asked "Are you Ned?" And lo and behold, Vic and I got to meet Morris Pavilion, who I didn't realize lived here at all! Sorry we couldn't meet up after the movies for more of a chat, but come to the next FAP, whenever that is!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 1 August 2004 15:52 (twenty years ago) link

And wait, how rude am I to forget this! Chaki was kind enough to get gifts via his work for all of us there -- and in a brilliant example of knowing me perfectly, his gift for me was the just-released-the-other-day Soft Cell DVD Non-Stop Exotic Video Show, the collection of videos and films for the first album and the remix EP. Thank you very much!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 1 August 2004 15:59 (twenty years ago) link

Yes, great to meet you all. A repeat is called for - the black dice / beer / pool idea someone mentioned is promising.

And for any lurkers reading this (god knows why), I was there to represent YOU.

Lukas (lukas), Sunday, 1 August 2004 23:59 (twenty years ago) link

IM SORRY I DINT MEET CHU LOOKUS

Sir Chaki McBeer III (chaki), Monday, 2 August 2004 00:25 (twenty years ago) link

Also (Ned and Elvis T) here's that guy I was talking about

namechecking hua hsu

Lukas (lukas), Monday, 2 August 2004 01:28 (twenty years ago) link

oh, so sorry i missed it. i just have so much work to do. *cry*

lolita corpus (lolitacorpus), Monday, 2 August 2004 03:01 (twenty years ago) link

Me, too. I know how you feel lolita.

Arthur (Arthur), Monday, 2 August 2004 03:49 (twenty years ago) link

Aw. You were both missed, good peoples. But fret not! The next FAP will probably be Aug 21 or thereabouts, to coincide with Sunset Junction and the imminent LA move of Jeremy, who seems a very good sort.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 August 2004 05:27 (twenty years ago) link

OH MY. Sunset Junction FAP. That could be trouble.

dean? (deangulberry), Monday, 2 August 2004 05:43 (twenty years ago) link

So you're saying you'll finally SHOW UP TO A FAP or something then.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 August 2004 05:44 (twenty years ago) link

I will document on this thread that I will be at both days of the Sunset Junction!

I may show up for Black Dice FAP, also. I will definitely be at both shows.

dean? (deangulberry), Monday, 2 August 2004 05:49 (twenty years ago) link

Are we definitely aiming at a Black Dice FAP, then? When's that show again?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 August 2004 05:50 (twenty years ago) link

Echo - 8/27
Knitting Factory - 8/28

IIRC, Ben lives on sycamore near the Knitting Factory and was offering to host a Black Dice FAP for that Saturday? I may be wrong....

dean? (deangulberry), Monday, 2 August 2004 05:54 (twenty years ago) link

Hey! It was great to meet Ned, and I was sorry I wasn't able to hang out before or afterward (we had to drive to Santa Clarita right after the movies). I'd definitely be up for a Sunset Junction FAP.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Monday, 2 August 2004 15:41 (twenty years ago) link

Rock, we'll see you there or thereabouts.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 August 2004 15:47 (twenty years ago) link
