The X Games thread

I'm really enjoying them this year. I usually feel guilty for secretly watching them, but this year I said "Look, Wifey, I really wanna watch X Games, OK? You've seen this Law & Order, like, six times." "OK, Dan Cortez," she said, real Alice Kramden-like, and went upstairs. Fuck this place.

Anyway - am I the only one who's been watching?

won't be on here for a couple of months (and then they'll go out at 4 in the morning on channel 5) but i will tape them and watch them when they do (well, i'll ffwd over all the racing and surfing).

two weeks pass...
ok, caught a 10 minute piece of this in sports news roundup thing before the thing i'd actually set the video to record. they showed Sandro's 900 (woo, only the second one in competition ever) and snips of Mirra's winning run in bike vert (was that an opposite flair? doesn't sound like enough to win to be honest), Travis' black eye and the winner's consequetive flip variation and 360. and not enough else.

disappointed that i didn't see anyone use the bowl part of the ramp but i'm guessing Burnquist did at the very least. i guess i have to wait for the full thing.

(they also showed, two nights before, a repeat of the best-of the xgames from 2001(?) specifically the skateboard vert where Bucky was sitting pretty with 95% and only Bob to skate...)

olympics? pah! 8)

one month passes...
ok, ch5 really screwed this up here in england - none of the scheduled episodes went out at the right time - twice i ended up with 90 miuntes of baseball and last week it started 40 minutes after the given time. i saw, in total:

second half of moto-x big air (travis was robbed of second)
all the step up (yawn)
ryan's very final (and atrocious) run on bike park
most of first run in bike vert
that new moto-x indoor / outdoor thing (yawn)
the skateboard best trick (although without sandro's 900. was that after time? no mention of it in the commentary but then they showed the winners podium and there he was)

disappointed.

one year passes...
um, at the risk of beating a dead horse:

(you only need to watch the first 7 seconds)

(ch5 coverage lacking again this year but think it may be a fault of the coverage they were given. didn't show either of the gold or silver runs for bmx vert. vert ramp is over-complicated this year. bmx dirt had only 3 jumps on it = dud. rally cars = dud. surfing = dud)

How the hell do you pull one of those off though? I know they have foam pits to practice in, but that's still a hell of a height to fall from if you screw it up.

three years pass...

this year's footage is currently being shown on ch5 about an hour a week on 5. but x-games themselves seem to be bent on destroying the aspects of it i like by constant fiddling with the format. out has gone the 8 people in the skateboard and bmx vert finals getting 3 decent runs of a minute each, top score wins and in comes a final 5 in a jam format of 30 seconds each, 15 minutes total, sum of two highest scores wins*. bob b didn't make the skate vert final, no sign of shaun. no inline vert that i can see. no flatlands. even the vert ramp looked like it had seen better days - the flat looked like little more than planks. (the park was nice though)

the skate and bmx big air is fun but very much a 1 trick pony. and then they added big grind, or whatever, which was just dull with nobody making anything. ditto skate street which is 10 people having 10 attempts each at 1 obstacle, no flow. way too much moto.

at least, unlike some other channels, they didn't edit it to oblivion. saw one thing on ch4 where a bloke ws doing a run and they put in fast cuts and camera angles and slowmo to make it look more exciting i guess. bloke was doing flairs and 540s and tailwhips but that wasn't exciting enough, somehow.

(jamie bestwick in the bmx vert, first two runs 49/50 (nobody else got close), hung up & banged head on third run. interviewed as the winner with no memory of what had happened or what he'd done)

(very little footage available online, even expn has only clips and interviews)
