Ed (dali), Monday, 16 August 2004 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay! The anti-Chavez spin you get on US tee-vee is staggering. Goddamn communists! Hell, they even call Canadians communists...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 16 August 2004 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess this means the US will stay out of Venezuelan politics from now on...

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 16 August 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

We hope so, but experience suggest the US right is addicted to meddling in our affairs.

The people of South America (daveb), Monday, 16 August 2004 10:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Chavez is absolute scum, he should be thrown in prison at the very least

Mediawhore, Monday, 16 August 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

That's as nearly as ill-considered as my starting post. Are you Otto Reich? Geedit? Reich! REICH!!!! He's a fucking right-wing lunatic. DYS!!!!!!!

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 16 August 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Chavesz maybe scum but he's been democratically elected and reconfirmed with a overwheming popular manadate, which is more than some leaders could boast.

there goes that theory:

Oil Prices Drop as Chávez Wins Venezuela Vote.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Accordin to mydad who works in the oil industry the biggest fear was that chavez would lose, because having fired omst oposition people from the oil industry an opposition win would mean that venezuela would most probbaly go through the same strikes that happened in 2002 but with left wingers striking against the right.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I have yet to talk to friend Miggie about this (I know she's been awfully busy) but I suspect she'll have very mixed feelings. I know she had been so fed up with it all she wasn't even sure how she was going to vote on the day.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Poor Venezuela. Having oil is such a mixed blessing for most countries.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Just dont buy gas from Citgo - theyre the state run gas arm of Venezuela.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

You mean the money goes to the Venezuelan people and not to a bunch of fat Texan wankers? Where's the nearest Citgo station?

This looks alarming.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the considered un hysterical tone of the piece. Use of things like 'dragged kicking and screaming' and the 'electoral commission's tricks' without mention of the forged signatures.

This one seperates the liberals from the socialists; the Guardian's been practically schizophrenic.
