For a murder case, no less:

The presenter will help decide whether Dion Coleman, 27, is guilty of shooting Walter Holley in an argument over a counterfeit $50 note in February 2002.

The trial is expected to last three days. Winfrey said: "I'm just hoping it doesn't take longer than a week because I have shows to do."

If it pleases the Oprah...

Huck, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

One more outburst like that I'll find you out of Oprah!

Huck, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"Remember Magna Carta! Did she die in vain?"

(obscure British comedy reference flying miles above the head of non-British ILXers)

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I gotta admit that it's kinda nice she's not weaseling out.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"Not guilty by reason of self-actualization!"

Huck, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost,

Oprah seems pretty cool. I don't particularly like her show, but for the most part, I respect what she does and tries to do.

Huck, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

SHE PAYS PEOPLE TO STAND IN LINE FOR HER, FOR FUCK'S SAKE

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Still she's no Barbra Adams.

Huck, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

does magna carta mean nothing to you?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

... oh yeah, that's the right quote

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it reasonable of me to assume that the defense really wanted Winfrey-as-juror, despite the prosecution's "it'll be a circus" objections?

nabiscothingy, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

How many episodes of her program will be devoted to this experience and the aftermath?

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I say 4

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"I'm just hoping it doesn't take longer than a week because I have shows to do."

i was a grand juror once a month for a YEAR. she shouldn't complain.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"Once a month for a year" = 12 days = almost two weeks?

nabiscothingy, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I got a jury summons once. I was living out of town, but the summons came to my parents' house, return address like Sheriff's Office or something. My mom got nervous. Obv. I didn't show, and I don't think it's been brought up again. But obviously, that's why I don't vote or pay taxes anymore.

Huck, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Whatever. You're Canadian, what are they going to do, spank your bare ass with maple leaves and revoke your pot-smoking license for a month?

eat fudge banana swirl (Nick A.), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the worst they could do is send the police to ask me politely to turn down the Guess Who blaring at the reception from my same-sex marriage. I'm not gay, but if I have the right to marry a dude, by gum..

Huck, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, did you and the box turtle split up? What a shame.

eat fudge banana swirl (Nick A.), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

No, but I just didn't choose to celebrate our union in that way.

Huck, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post, sorta. I think Oprah has begged out of jury duty at least twice before in recent years, so I believe this time the judge told her that her get-out-of-jury-duty-free card was no longer valid.

The one time I had jury duty in Chicago for a murder case (not picked), the judge basically threatened everyone trying to back out that he would just give them a civil case next time, which take weeks rather than days. Maybe Oprah got the same ultimatum.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe the judge enticed her with the promise of pudding every hour, on the hour.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 07:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder how long it will take before Dion Coleman is a household name here in the good ol' USA.

I'm off to counterfeit me some fifties.

jewelly (jewelly), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Yo, did you guys see the photos of O at the courthouse? She looks really good.

Huck, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

That's my girl.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

latebloomer, what was your case?

I got attached to a 6-week case (in the UK), but we were dismissed after 2 days as the lawyers still had lots of points of law to argue. I ended up doing one case, which lasted 1 and a half days. I was foreman!
