I knew this was going to be you or Dom.

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I would've put the picture of him scoring up there, but there isn't one yet.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

His England goal was marvellous. I am liking him muchly.

(Even if he does have a really fat mum)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, puerile injoke there.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh he does? Well, forget this thread then.

xpost

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I felt rather moved by his goal - I always really liked Ian Wright, and I empathise with how he was feeling.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Here we go:

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Him and Glenn Johnson = future right-side of England? They looked pretty good together today. I was disappointed Defoe didn't get on the scoresheet though.

Although he did put Tottenham out of the FA Cup last season (well, that was Dean Richards and Gary Doherty, but still...)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Will Sven unleash SWP against Wales? If so he will be directly up against his Man City colleague, Ben Thatcher an Englishman by birth and who has played for England U21s.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

The commentators kept saying how good that right side looked, but Ukraine had some goodish attacking moments in the last quarter or so, and they were pretty much all down that side. I think Johnson may have the same defensive limitations, particularly positional, as Cole.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

SWP gets the ball inside his own half. He runs. Then he runs some more. Men get in position. SWP runs faster, gets to the corner of the box, you wonder what he's gonna do cos Owen and Defoe don't seem available, then just as the defender meets his run he takes one last touch then bangs it across the goal and in. Utterly wonderful. Spend the whole of the rest of the game thinking that everyone should just pass to him all the time. Legend.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

You could put a sack of rocks on wheels on the RH side of the England midfield and it would still get past Ben Thatcher.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Or Danny Mills, as the sack is better known.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

defoe was shit.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah - his finishing was a bit off, but he ran about like a bastard and kept getting into good positions. Just didn't shoot that well. He looked a better bet than Vassell in any case.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that I will
name any children I might
have from now on "Shaun"

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Shaun is a star. I am very happy he has (correctly) chosen to stay at city. I have seen him through the u-18s, the reserves, first team - now England. His happiness on scoring is something he has shown through all.

He is tiny. I bumped into him at a meet about four seasons ago. First I thought he was a tiny kid. Realised he was a fully grown Shaun.

An incredible talent. he played the game cleverly tonight - he wanted to lay that ball off to someone, but as noone was there, took the chance. He has scored many, many more spectacular goals at City (about two seasons ago, we were disputing whether he'd ever get a goal - his first, if memory serves, was a header!).

Anyway - a huge talent. We got trouble from the racist brigade for calling him SWeeP. Until he said he loved it. His half-brother, Ian Wright's genetic son, Bradley Wright-Phillips, is known as BeeP.

___ (___), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasn't SWP who scored 3 goals against united last year?

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

As long as we're not doing Gylfi Einarsson- A Thread, I'm cool.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

The top picture is shortly after his daft robot dance, on rattling a classic past Tim Howard to make a 4-1 win in the Derby.

If you care (like I do).

(x-post) don't think he got three. Actually - maybe he did. One in each game. My drink addled mind is struggling with statistics!

___ (___), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/3536387.stm

Just one apparently but I was so impressed with that goal that it trebled in my memory.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

He scored one at COMS, one in the FA cup - not sure about the league. My mind is addled.

16-1 for the last goal. Bookies in Manchester will be sore. Quite a few of us spied that one...

Laughable that Spurs thought they could buy him now, isn't it?!

___ (___), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

If our brightest hope had gone to Spurs, it would have been utterly calamitous for City.

His goal tonight was ace - it contained that shambolic element that characterises all SWP runs. He's so unpredictable and exciting to watch. What a nice interviewee he was afterwards too!

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw him play for Man City in a pre-season friendly against lancaster city back in 2000 and he was rubbish and I thought he'd never make itit was clear then that he was very very special indeed.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i didnt see this goal what with me watching the drab irish game! that andy reid looks a bit tasty, eh lads???!!!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I somehow managed to completely forget this match was on. Damn ILE.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i only caught the last 5 minutes, but delighted by the result, for Sven more than anyone else.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Will Sven unleash SWP against Wales? If so he will be directly up against his Man City colleague, Ben Thatcher

I like the idea of SWP taking on Thatcher. Let's form a picket line.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 19 August 2004 05:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel vindicated. My favourite player of the last four years and now the world knows I WAS RIGHT ALL ALONG.

There was nothing daft about his robot dance. It was a righteous moment.

Tag (Tag), Thursday, 19 August 2004 07:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Tag - the robot dance was unwise. I have at least everyone in the South Stand 2nd tier in agreement with me!

___ (___), Thursday, 19 August 2004 07:21 (twenty-one years ago)

With Defoe and SWP coming into contention in a team already playing Owen and Vassell, are England becoming the titchiest team in International Football?

Joe Kay (feethurt), Thursday, 19 August 2004 07:28 (twenty-one years ago)

But robots are great!

Tag (Tag), Thursday, 19 August 2004 07:32 (twenty-one years ago)

But tiny robots will turn us all into grey mush.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 19 August 2004 07:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Is right midfield his settled position now? Hasn't Keegan played him in defence and up front too? I loved the way he wrapped his foot around the ball after pushing it wide.

Pleased for Beckham too, he seemed energised by his goal.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Thursday, 19 August 2004 08:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Gerrard made a lovely turn at one point that not only beat his defender, but also the cameraman - lovely stuff

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 19 August 2004 08:06 (twenty-one years ago)

That turn was beautiful. Gerrard looks pretty terrifying whenever he goes rampaging up the left, on the basis of the last week's worth of games alone.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 August 2004 08:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm also very happy that the idea of Ledley King as a proper England central defender no longer ilicits howls of derision.

I'd still like to see either Paul Robinson or Chris Kirkland getting a full 90mins in an England shirt against credible opposition. With any luck David James will break a finger or something this season.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 August 2004 08:10 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah someone please explain that turn, um fr completeness' sake. (ok you know I'm gunna try it, but.) it happened so quick but it looked quite novel (i.e. not a cruyff, not just a straight turn), looked like he did a little move.

cºzen (Cozen), Thursday, 19 August 2004 08:17 (twenty-one years ago)

England have been looking mightiuly impressive in friendlies for sopme time now. I have not watched one since the Dutch game where Vassell scored the scissor kick. I'm sure I'm missing out, but I just can't be arsed for friendlies anymore...

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 19 August 2004 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

and it wasn't as if it was against one of the best teams in the world.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 19 August 2004 08:27 (twenty-one years ago)

England have looked rubbish in friendlies for ages now, if you exclude the Iceland game. The six subs rule is a good one, makes it a bit more like a proper game, and I was pleased/amazed to see Beckham and Owen make the full 90.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 August 2004 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I wasn't terribly pleased by that - I'd have liked to see Gerard and Lampard in the middle for a bit, and I'd like to have seen Defoe or Smith get a longer chance. I guess it was worth it having something very close to our best team out for morale reasons, a good performance against a decent side before the competitive games start, and my thinking that it would be nice to have a good look at someone other than Owen and Beckham, two players we know very well indeed, may not be as worthwhile as that.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 19 August 2004 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

where did swp play when he came on? was he on the right wing?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 19 August 2004 09:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, SWP was on the right, Beckham moved further infield.

No mention of the incredibly loud booing of Kieron Dyer in front of his home crowd? I've never seen anything like that before.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 August 2004 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

booing a player on the team you're rooting for is incredibly stupid. simultaneously demanding victory and trying to distract one of your players - wtf? he may well be being a tool at newcastle but hostilities should be put aside.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 19 August 2004 09:34 (twenty-one years ago)

how am I going to do this gerard turn on the park, now?

cºzen (Cozen), Thursday, 19 August 2004 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

ball on your left. now pushing the football behind you and on the right hand side with the left foot whilst dipping shoulder to right side, then immediately using the same foot flick the ball back to where it was and start running with your right.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 19 August 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i only saw that turn for about a second though so might be wrong.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 19 August 2004 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

anyway what's this trying to turn people as a full-back rubbish?

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 19 August 2004 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

seeing as england have tried to shoe-horn players from almost every position into the left-wing role (with basically no success) do folks think it may be worth trying out with SWP?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 19 August 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Looking forward to the first all-black England team

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 19 August 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

why?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 19 August 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it'll be an interesting event when it happens

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 19 August 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

there's no guarantee it would actually happen. i'd prefer to think of it as an irrelevant issue anyway. there hasn't even been an all black Premiership club starting XI yet tho...

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 19 August 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm looking forward to it just to hear the commentators struggle about whether it's OK to mention it.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 19 August 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

ah yes i can hear John Motson now

"all look alike these players..."

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 19 August 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"They don't like it up 'em"

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 19 August 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

-- weasel diesel (kilian(dot)[email protected]), August 19th, 2004.

NOOOOO! It has been chatted about by fans at club level, and then flatly decided against. SWP has only really started to shine since he got a stable position on the right wing. I doubt it would do any good trying to change that.

___ (___), Thursday, 19 August 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

there hasn't even been an all black Premiership club starting XI yet tho...

I think Arsenal could have managed this if it weren't for the goalkeeper.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 August 2004 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

my fantasy team would be all black except for lampard and sorenson, might still go hislop in goal, lampard is just too nice tho

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 19 August 2004 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

shaka?!

cºzen (Cozen), Thursday, 19 August 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 19 August 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
my heart went out to the lad wright-phillips last night.

opportunity to stake his claim disrupted by boorish chanting.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 18 November 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

of course, my heart went out to *everyone* who was on the receiving end of the chanting, not just SWP.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 18 November 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

and it's not just the chanting that disrupted his opportunity to stake his claim. the rest of the team kind of let him (and themselves) down too.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 18 November 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

On the few occasions he got the ball i was willing him to show the knuckle-dragging bastards what he can do, just as he did at millwall 3 seasons ago, when there were no away fans and (sections of the) home support presumably felt more comfortable than usual to abuse black players. SWP scored the winning goal that day in the last few minutes with a fantastic curling shot, after a wild dribble.

[Incidentally, my favourite memory of that match was of City players celebrating a goal by running to the empty away end and waving and blowing kisses to a bank of unpopulated blue seats]

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Thursday, 18 November 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Shaun was fantastic against Pompey last night. Heaven knows what will happen if we lose him in January. Alternatively, if we keep playing like we did in the 2nd half yesterday, then maybe he'll have no reason to move.

SWP actually scored again, a second or two after the final whistle, something not mentioned at all on MOTD.

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Sunday, 21 November 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/44974000/jpg/_44974486_swp_getty300.jpg

Yay SWP! Even if your club has become about seven zillion times more evil since you were last there.
