Just fucking admit it, dudes - cats only have one face

I know they can open and close their mouth and eyes, but I personally class those as biological functions, pure and simple. Other than that, they wear that face like a mask 24-7. Let's just all agree on this one and then we can move on to politics or something. I mean, I'M a cat person! But cats faces are like the wind, they don't change. Evolution is done with cats faces. Science and art have turned their attentions to worthier subjects, like stem cell research and sound installation. And when we're all so much wormfood, cats will still be there, with the same fucking faces.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 19 August 2004 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Also - they can only make about 2 or 3 different noises at most. Pretty lame, really.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 19 August 2004 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean...right?

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 19 August 2004 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom calls my cat "piggy face".

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Thursday, 19 August 2004 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

B b b But expressions is how cats communicate! :-o I once heard that even meowing only came about when we domesticated 'em so they could get food offa us humies.

My cat can most certainly raise an "eyebrow" (or whisker), curl her top cat lip thingy into a billy idol sneer, narrow her eyes when cross, widen them when curious, etc etc. So balls to you adam!

;)

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 19 August 2004 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I need to buy Tom a drink.

"eyebrow"!

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 19 August 2004 02:16 (twenty-one years ago)

cats are two-faced.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 19 August 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Cats must have at least two faces, cause they can make that "disgusted" expression where they look at you like you're the one who takes big stinky shits in a box in the kitchen.

Ally, your cat looks like an old Polish guy!

nabiscothingy, Thursday, 19 August 2004 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Tad to thread for confirmation.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 19 August 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Tad is quite youthful!

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 19 August 2004 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, do old Polish dudes sit around in bags? What are you talking about?

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Thursday, 19 August 2004 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

(Well it mostly just looks like an old man, but it was reminding me of a particular old Polish guy I used to see in Chicago, so that slipped in.)

nabiscothingy, Thursday, 19 August 2004 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Ally, old polish dudes sit around in the bag, so yes.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 19 August 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 19 August 2004 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 19 August 2004 02:33 (twenty-one years ago)

that cat doesn't look like the old Polish guys I see in Greenpoint occasionally because he is not drunk, passed out on the ground, with 4 days worth of stubble.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 19 August 2004 02:33 (twenty-one years ago)

My cat does everything BUT meow normally. She makes all these weird brrrt! noises, and when she sees birds, she does this fucked-up thing where she makes a "ehhh eh eh ehhh!" squeaky noise rapidly, as if imitating a bird in distress. Seen a few cats do it... wtf is with that?

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 19 August 2004 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

One of my now dead cats as well as one of the ones I have know do that weird birdwatching noise thing, too, Trayce.

But yeah cats make lots of different noises.

hstencil did you just answer yourself?

anyway i'm in basic agreement with this thread premise. people do a bit too much "interpreting" of their pets' supposedly subtle expressions. "oh, does poofy prefer the pale green coverlet to the beige one? it's a little too 'southwestern'? oh, poofy, you're always right...."

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Thursday, 19 August 2004 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Thursday, 19 August 2004 04:08 (twenty-one years ago)

My cat likes to kill baby birds and gophers but he won't eat them. He just leaves them somewhere where we're likely to find the corpse.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 19 August 2004 04:10 (twenty-one years ago)

A friend gave me this WONDERFUL book called something like "French for practical cats" (or was it "Practical French for cats"? anyway). And it has a little section about how the cat prefers the muddy puddle, the toilet bowl, the faucet - anything but the bowl of water!

mei (mei), Thursday, 19 August 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

If cats only have one face, then how do you explain the 'evil eye'. If you have a cat, then you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 19 August 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

are all cats neurotic?

AaronK (AaronK), Thursday, 19 August 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Enzo the kitten has lots of faces, makes lots of noises, and has lots of different smells. He also drinks from the faucet and currently his favorite toys are Q-tips and Buf-Pufs. (Ally, I heart piggy face.)

Je4nne Ć’ury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 19 August 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, cats have different expressions, but I concede that body posture does have a lot to do with it. Pleased, distressed, about to kill, etc.

One of my cats also loves drinking out of the tub faucet. Another plays in there like its his own personal half-pipe.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 19 August 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

My kitty, Pepper, has a way of puffing up her face like a blowfish or something. It makes her look like a squirrel. (Ok, so maybe it's just that her fur gets pushed up around her face, but it's cute).

Lucy makes this really funny face when we offer her something to sniff and she doesn't like it. She really looks like she's wincing and she pulls her head back so much, she has no neck.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 19 August 2004 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

If you give up trying to interpret your cat's "feelings" and interpret all of their actions as hardwired quests for food, water, and a comfortable temperature, there is no mystery to them at all.

That doesn't mean they're not fuzzy -- don't get me wrong.

Harold Media (kenan), Thursday, 19 August 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

What about all the crazy interactions between idle cats? Playing, fighting, trying to eat my hair, etc.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 19 August 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I had an ex-girlfriend once whose cat drank out of her water dish, but by scooping the water up to her mouth with her paw.

My one very oddball cat, Gypsy, has a nasty jealous look if we are paying any attention to the other cats. She also will wrestle with a rug until it's all rolled up and kick it violently with her back feet while making a rhur rhur noise like an engine starting. Strange.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 19 August 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah my cat does the kick too, whenever playing with anything, i call it the "neck-breaker"

kephm, Thursday, 19 August 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh come come Mr. Media, there's more to cat's feelings than that. Granted many people tend to humanize them and attribute them with a more sophisticated emotional range then they actually posess, but going 180 the opposite way isn't accurate either. My cat can be happy, nervous, excited, cranky...

oops (Oops), Thursday, 19 August 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

cats are weird. watching them is a good substitute for pondering the fundamental meaninglessness of the universe.
