some air show pilots are practicing over downtown chicago

there are huge bursts of noise from the planes flying near overhead. i can see the shadows of the jets on the sides of office buildings. jets in v-formations steal across the small pocket of sky i can see from my window.

i actually find it really unnerving. no doubt the pilots know what they're doing, but their jets are perilously close to the tops of the buildings here, and as noted above the loud noises are unsettling and make it difficult to concentrate (at least).

i really hate this.

Air Show, dude.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

How many years have you lived there?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

did you read the thread title?

amateur!!!st, Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I like it.

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I was just talking to Nick over my lunch break and he was saying the same thing. Crazy.

I'm out in the boonies so my work day hasn't been that exciting.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

he did use the words "air show" in the title. xpost

I imagine your quitting smoking isn't helping the situation.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah I read it! Happens every year, though.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, they were zooming around my lunch hour. I waved hello.

eat fudge banana swirl (Nick A.), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i'm sure the nicotine withdrawal only enchances the feeling of unease.

hstencil: i know the air shows happens every year, but i've never worked in the loop before so i've never observed it in quite this way. i find it unsettling. i'm not going to offer an argument against air shows or air show practices, however, if that's what you would like to debate.

amateur!!!st, Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't wanna debate anything, I'm just sorry you have to deal with it. It was always one of my least favorite things about living in Chicago

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

It does seem odd that this is allowed post-9/11. My boss encouraged me to go to the air show this weekend to see the STEALTH FIGHTER.

eat fudge banana swirl (Nick A.), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

holy shit did you hear that one nick? at 2:37?

amateur!!!st, Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

dude stealth fighters are invisible

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

They did this over dowtown SF, too. It was loud and great. And they did loops over Fisherman's Wharf and dived down towards Union Square and everything.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah yes. Kelsey called me about an hour ago and said "WTF why are there military jets over my house?" I figured it was the Air Show. I can't hear anything in Evanston.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

This morning I saw a helicopter.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I beleive I was heard to mutter "cool".

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I like air shows but one of the most aggravating things from when I lived in Chicago is the Chicago Air Show, which basically ensures that if you live in the city, you can't escape it.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe i should take the metra to waukegan tonight or something. i can't stand this.

amateur!!!st, Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

from this fun ol' thread:

Who the hell goes to Air Shows?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I am north of the loop so I'm not getting the brunt of the bombastics.

I did make a lame invisible/STEALTH FIGHTER joke when talking to my boss. She LOVED it.

eat fudge banana swirl (Nick A.), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Also I don't have a FUCKING WINDOW.

eat fudge banana swirl (Nick A.), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

You guys are a bunch of pussies, what the hell.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

true.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean I would never deny it.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously, 'o no aeroplanes gahh'. come on lads, chin up

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

What, you don't like pussy?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

q: what do you call a stealth fighter that's black, white, and red all over?
a: haha it's invisible!

q: so this stealth fighter walks into a bar!
a: haha it's invisible!

amateur!!!st, Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd love me some air show. stealth fighter! sweet!

g--ff (gcannon), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the old shit tho, like the korea-era jet. the corsair, was it? totally boxy, it's like this killer flying volvo or something.

g--ff (gcannon), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I like it.

I couldn't be bothered to attend an air show or whatever. But a couple days a year of seeing these incredibly impressive machines hurtling through the sky at awesome speeds, it's kind of neat. plus the SOUND of these things is truly something.

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

it'd be cooler if you got to go to an airport and look at them upclose, though.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

flying? in a metal bird? nonsense!

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i hate planes

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

how can you hate planes? planes rock.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I love planes and flying and airports and associated culture.

I hate that the view out my windows is of a constant stream of planes and helicopters traveling over Manhattan.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i've been noticing lots of planes during landing and takeoff. the place where i'm staying at the moment has a deck with a good view of the sky, and i guess i'm not used to that. i suppose it must be under a particular flight pattern or something. i hate seeing planes, it fills me with discomfort and dread.

amateur!!!st, Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

A stealth flew low overhead here a few times .. all I could think of was, if I were a meek little Iraqi guy living in a mud hut and that thing flew overhead, I'd be waving the white flag.

.. I guess that's why they hate us.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

This morning I saw a helicopter.
-- Gear! (drink_to_remembe...) (webmail), August 19th, 2004 12:38 PM. (Gear!) (link)

Ha! I hear that helicopter every single night where I live.

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I like planes that are not used to kill people. Sometimes I like those too, tohugh.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

passenger jets are used to kill people now

amateur!!!st, Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

hate the game, not the playa

xpost what isn't used to kill people nowadays?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

That Calvert album is a beaut of insanity, as my review in the AMG testifies.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 August 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I really wish I still had it.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 19 August 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

don't forget: all that noise and jet fuel emissions are paid for by you the taxpayer!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 19 August 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Due to me now being out in the uberdull 'burbs, I do miss me some Chicago Air and Water Show practicin', as unnerving as it was (I was at Randolph & Michigan 'til a few months ago). I'll have to settle for the token NW side passings-by on Sat, I guess...
