OED, but you have to pay.

I find dictionary.com fine. If I need to check British English spellings then I use http://dictionary.cambridge.org. It's very basic - has a good idioms dictionary though.

Yeah, dictionary.com for American and dictionary.cambridge.org for actual English.

dictionary.com was the one that got me into the "spelt" confusion.

I like using http://www.dict.org - it's hella fast. Otherwise I use Sherlock as the front end to dictionary.com

Dictionary.com meets my needs when I want a proper definition of the word in question. Otherwise, I just use Google. Type 'define ' into Google, and Bingo.

Using Sherlock for anything except film trailers is just perverse. Seriously, that app is putrid.

Well, fuck. half of my last post got stripped out, I guess 'cos I used greater than/less than characters.

Let's try this again. To use Google to get word definitions.... type:

'define *word*' into Google

where *word* is the word you're looking for a definition of.

I recommend onelook.com - it searches loads of other dictionaries, including several of the major ones and a bunch of specialist ones (philosophy, science, medicine, etc.) which is extra-useful for most of the words I look for.

the onelook dictionary is good cos it searches all of them.

I like http://www.bartelby.com - though it's increasingly infested with popups.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 20 August 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I tend to use Merriam-Webster as it's the first one I ever found and bookmarked. I like the fact that it has a thesaurus as well.
